Food Network... Let's give them a hand!
No not that kind of hand... and not that finger either. Because FN doesn't seem to have a clue. Let's give them a helping hand being the new Collective Executive VP's of Programming. Assume we have fired all of the..uhh.. ehem... "talent".
Which show stays?
or
Which show gets brought back?
or
What show/concept will we develop to be a smash hit?
or
Has the network degraded so far as to be beyond all hope?

I would keep Good Eats, Barefoot Contessa, Tyler's Ultimate, Easy Entertaining with Michael Chiarello, Everyday Italian, A Cook's Tour, Molto Mario and ONE Paula Deen show- NOT Paula's Party. Actually, I would also let Alton Brown do whatever the hell he wanted, I adore him.
PBS has excellent cooking shows that the Food Network should take on: America's Test Kitchen, Jacque Pepin's old show, Everyday Food and my all time favorite cooking show: Lydia's Italy with Lydia Bastianich. Also, is anyone watching the new Green Network? Emeril has a new cooking show on there that's excellent. He films it inside a Whole Foods Market. The show features healthy, organic recipes.
I think the Food Network is beyond help at this point. I don't understand what it is they're trying to do with their new lineup. It really perplexes me and it makes less and less sense that someone like Ina Garten, who makes beautiful food, would be on the same station as people like Sandra Lee and Guy Fieti.
PumpkinBear at 4:08AM on 08/25/08
TVFN could get a wealth of feedback if someone in their camp would just read SE. I imagine there are lots of food blogs and sites lampooning TVFN for some really bad choices.
For crying out loud, quit giving new shows to wannabes (like Guy and the Neelys) and get some money into new Good Eats, Barefoot Contessa, Chiarello and (bows deeply) Anne Burrell. More food competition, less "move the cake." Spend some bucks to research real cooks because guess what? We're not going away! Isn't it ironic that no matter how thoroughly TVFN pumps ammo into its own foot, we (being the real cooks) are still optimistically hoping to see less Food Drivel TV and more real Food TV.
They'll either eventually get it or lose us for good. Their choice. Small hint: Don't diss your core audience.
therealchiffonade at 5:23AM on 08/25/08
i could do without most of what is on food network i like alton brown, ina garten, giada and chiarello but the two shows that i actually must watch are Nigela's and Jamie Oliver's, with them its not just about the recipes but an actual connection to the food and they definitely make cooking sexy again in an old fashioned rustic a little dash of this and a handful of that and mush it all around with your hands kind of way.
avryan at 7:25AM on 08/25/08
actually i would keep all the "talent" and fire all the execs. Then i would put Alton Brown and Anthony Bourdain, Mario, and Ina in a room and let them develop new shows, I think with their skills and knowledge as well as divergent personalities, we would have a new season worked out very quickly. and in case they need incentive, i would serve them Paula Deens bananna, ham whatever bread pudding topped with potato chips. (although that last part may not be possible because of Geneva convention)
huneybumper at 7:50AM on 08/25/08
A time not so long ago my T.V. was tuned into foodnetwork all day....and now I don't even give em 30min. the trouble with fn is the exec. know it all attitude and refuse to see a sinking ship....until something drastic happens I'll never tune into fn
Markbb at 9:18AM on 08/25/08
They clearly don't care. A pox on them.
@therealchiffonade: They have lost me for good. I literally never turn them on...even when there's something on I want to watch, I forget about it. For some weird reason, they grew to hate their core audience (????!!).
And AMEN huneybumper and Markbb!!
Chef Jo at 9:38AM on 08/25/08
They seem beyond help, at this point. They are building on a model that is so cheesy and so cheap, talent like Ina Garten, Michael Chiarello, Giada, Jamie and Alton Brown seem almost out of place. Their quality sticks out like a sore thumb.
I sued to watch all the time, and now, I barely make it through 30 minutes ata stretch. So sad.
Brownie at 9:47AM on 08/25/08
confession: I like Ace of Cakes. But it's less about the architectural challenges of the cakes and more about "personality" than it used to be, which gets boring. And recently, they even showcased a cake that was made out of styrofoam - I'm sure that's art, but it's not cake! It was more fun when they were trying to construct a german shepherd out of rice krispies...
eleeb at 10:00AM on 08/25/08
I completely agree with most of what has been said already...I do like watching Ace of Cakes because, as a baker, I appreciate a whole show dedicated to sweets :). But even that show has lost some interest because they're so focused on being celebrities now that the authenticity and discussion of the food is disappearing. Alton, Ina, Tyler, Mario - these are accomplished food professionals who can provide us with interesting stories and information. One or two shows run by home cooks is interesting, but it feels like the whole network is trading expertise for "family appeal".
teenagefoodie at 10:24AM on 08/25/08
@huneybumper: Fabulos idea! I secnod it! but, coudl we also have Morimoto chime in? I would love to see him have his own show. He is truly amazing.
And I don't care that the episodes are old, I don't get Fine Living and I would love to see the original Iron Chef come back. Perhaps they could be persuaded to create new episodes! :) Oh, I dream....
Traveller at 11:01AM on 08/25/08
I think they should keep giada, alton, ina, bobby, some of paula (not her party), tyler, and the newest "big daddy" dude. I also think that they should have a new show that draws the attention of the youth. Mabey star and older teenager in a show who invites younger teens to cook or have some type of "throwndown".
cooked7 at 11:23AM on 08/25/08
I have never made anything of Ida's, Tyler's, or Bobby's that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. Alton has given me techniques that are practical and as a result, have raised the qualiity of my cooking in general. The rest of the bunch are supposed to be entertainers (I think). Guess what Food TV?... they're NOT. If I hear one more story about how Aunt Peggy made this recipe when I was four or how cousin Claude used to take us a 'fishin' and I fell out of the boat, I'm going to SCREAM! During the Next FTV Star competition, the execs continually stressed to the contestants the importance of making their recipes personal by relating childhood stories and other drivel that was supposed to make them more "approachable". For the most part, anytime I hear a so-called reminiscence, I want to gag, especially from Rachel Ray and Sonny Anderson. I DON'T CARE! It makes them sound like chattering idiots. There's nothing wrong with a little silence while cooking, perhaps adding some music in the background if silence is too offensive like they do with some shows. And while I'm on my soapbox, I might as well say that I think the Food TV execs. are forcing the talent to become a pack of liars. Three to four anecdotes per show? I think not. Whoo! Now I feel better and can go back to PBS where I belong!
Josdean at 12:52PM on 08/25/08
LOL - Not every show on every network can appeal to evrey one every time. I agree on some points - but I am sure that somewhere out there someone LOVES Paula Deen and LOVES Rachel Ray. Welcome to the evolution of food TV - which is part of the Scripps network. Once a channel goes "network" they stop using "talent" thinkers and use "executive" thinkers. Who look at stuff with $$ in their eyes rather then quality content.
Remember when MTV used to be MUSIC television???
bodaciousgirl at 1:35PM on 08/25/08
@bodaciousgirl: Music Television? Boy does that take me way back! Although, they did also have Remote Control and Just Say Julie Brown, so.....
Traveller at 1:55PM on 08/25/08
Let Alton run the network :)
Seriously, get rid of the challenge shows.
I hardly watch FN anymore. If its not Alton, its nothing.
miseenplace08 at 2:17PM on 08/25/08
I feel your pain. Fortunately Food Network Canada does dilute the crap (Neelys, Paul Deen, Guy) with some great home grown talent such as Michael Smith (Chef at Home), Laura Calder (French Food at Home), and Anna Olsen (Sugar, Fresh). Also they play some UK shows which are great, such as Sweet Baby James (James Martin). Perhaps instead of producing more crap, the US Food Network could show some of these great shows, and for once import some canadian culture instead of exporting more crap this way. Although I do like Ina Garten, even though her recipes are too fatty... Do check out the great recipes at www.foodtv.ca
PeanutButter at 2:39PM on 08/25/08
I really like Alton and the show has so much fabulous information... if only it was a little less cheesey. Sometimes it can be hard to watch.
Otherwise I'm with peanutbutter, we are lucky in Canada to get some decent British and homegrown shows and not as much of the Sandra Lee/Paula Deen/Gui Fieri (I had to google him and Sandra to see who they were). At the same time, I watched foodtv incessantly when it first came out but now I barely watch 30 mins a month.
lexophile at 3:46PM on 08/25/08
All this gives me hope and makes me smile.
I would love to see more Michael Chiarello, his show Napa Style was fun and he is charming and unpretentious. Jamie Oliver is really a genius, so more please. One of the things that make Nigella delightful is that she was a food writer first. Mercifully unchef-fy, she conveys her love of food poetically, and I love that.
So why not consider another UK import, say Tamasin Day-Lewis, writer of many excellent cookbooks and with a few cooking/lifestyle shows apparently under her (miniscule) belt. I've got her books and relish them.
Oh, I forgot, she's much too fancy-assed for FN, being Daniel's sister and the daughter of one of Britain's poet laureates, etc. What dumb ass American can relate to THAT? Now, back to banana and bacon poop...
Incidently, Ina is sweet and her Jeffery endearingly patient, but those shows of hers with her homely friends, well, zzzzzzzzzzzz
Hey! Why not give that hipster dufus Tony Bourdain a plain old kitchen cooking show? Who wouldn't want to see le Bourdain chopping onions and sweating over a hot stove in his whites??!
Pointy at 4:04PM on 08/25/08
A few shows I'd like to see.
1) Cooking in the Greenmarket or CSA share. This would be similar to Jamie Olivers show, but a little more down to earth for the right variety of what is available. ICE have courses like this with Richard Rubin and Melanie Underwood (who is very pleasant on the eyes for TV).
2) Wine and Cheese. I would love to see a series that pairs the two from different regions. David Rosengarten and Andrea Emmer would be perfect co-hosts. A rotation of chefs could add cooking content to the episodes through cuisine regional to the wine/cheese selections or actually cooking with the particular wine/cheeses. That would be a perfect leftover situation (ok, so you didnt finish the port, here's the best way to make a reduction sauce or poach steak tomorrow with the 7th bottle of cabernet you and 3 guests did not get too...
3) If they are going to have a Next Food Network Star, they should be acquiring contestants from the top restaurants rather than wanna bees with a camcorder. It's a novel concept to find FN Stars that already know how to cook. It would be easy to look for the top Chef's at NYC eateries (Gabrielle Hamilton of Prune would be colorful) and other cities for a good crop.
They need to get rid of Throwdown. It's not only a bad show, but really just an ego trip for Flay. The concept of finding someone who had expertise in a dish as the cornerstone of their business/family get togethers, deceiving them to participate in a fake FN show, and ambushing them for a competition: their specialty vs Flay's after spending half a day in the FN test kitchen is completely insulting and ill conceived, regardless of the judges outcome.
BirdDoggie at 4:25PM on 08/25/08
Anne Burrell's new show is nice; I feel like I'm actually *learning* something. More NEW Ina, keep Alton Brown, Michael Ciarello, Jamie Oliver, even Bobby Flay (the new one with guest grillers was actually not total drivel.) And keep Iron Chef, because again, I feel like there's something to be learned there - technique if nothing else.
Sandra Lee makes me cringe - not because I don't appreciate shortcuts, but because her presentation is too dumbed down and fake. I don't like the Neely's because, well, they're kinda stereotypical and it makes me uncomfortable, and because when I did try to watch I kept wanting to correct their technique. Paula Deen was fun when she was first on, because she had a clear point of view (butter!) but I feel like she's just flirting anymore and the recipe ideas aren't new. And Rachael Ray was a good theme, but honestly, I never cooked any of her food.
What I would like to see on FN is a return to technique based shows. By this I include Robin Miller's menu planning show - she may not be teaching me how to cook, but she does inspire me to think about new ways to make the most of my time and money. Out of the kitchen, I enjoyed Alton's Road Trips - where the Neallys and the Deen boys make this feel trite and cheap, Alton teaches me about regionality and specialization. 'Less entertainment, more education' sums up my needs from FN. (heck, I even like Dinner: Impossible because it shows creativity. that's the kind of entertainment I like from a food show..)
I think the idea on Next Food Network Star is good: that they need a point of view, but I think they need to develop that much more. (That said, I really don't like NFNS)
AliceBlue at 4:44PM on 08/25/08
This is wishful thinking but give me a little Bourdain or Ripert and I'd be happy. Skill that's easy on the eyes and shoots from the hip; doesn't get much better.
JacquelineS at 4:52PM on 08/25/08
I'm sorry, but I have more to say.
I started watching FN when shows like Sarah Moulton's Cooking Live, Surreal Gourmet, Naked Chef, Sweet Dreams (Gale Gand) and (was it called) My Country, My Kitchen were on. I feel like I'm a good cook now because of what I learned from FN then. I do not feel as though I could start watching FN now as a neophite cook and become as good a cook as I am from those old shows. (and man, what happened to Jacques Torres???) Just put a really great chef in front of the camera and the magic will happen! We don't need all this hype, we just need great cooks.

I fully accept that I am the only living person on earth who finds Alton Brown to be a miserable, smug douchebag, but I can't help it. I suffer through his bits on ICA, and I can't even watch Good Eats anymore, with the shtick and the silly and whatnot. I'd rather read Harold McGee's and Shirley Corriher's books, frankly.
And I love silly and ridiculous, honest! I even like Anne Burrell's Cookie Monster "brown food tastes good" voice! I swear!

Me me me! I want to see those shows!!! (French Food At Home? Waaaah.)
@Bangie - Alton rubs you the wrong way - this doesn't make you crazy or wrong. I don't read any recipes by Marcella Hazan because she condones putting sugar in tomato sauce. I get sideways looks about that all the time.
@Birddoggie - those are all great ideas!!!
@eleeb & teenagefoodie - I also love me some Duff. I have often said I'd work for him for free. BF went online to see if he does internships (he was going to sign me up) and Duff's site says has enough potential interns to last 3 lifetimes...LOL.

Give Ina's gay friends their own show. Call it "Taste Test: Dine and Shine With Ina's Guys." One by one, they evaluate, then give every FN star and their sets a complete makeover. First up: Sandra Lee.
hungryinhouston at 6:50PM on 08/25/08
I, too, lament the passing of the Food Network of old but they're getting excellent ratings with the new batches of shows. It sucks for those of us who miss quality shows, but if I was a stockholder, I'd be happy.
RegrettableFoodie at 7:41PM on 08/25/08
when is the FN funeral?
izatryt at 8:16PM on 08/25/08
@Hungryinhouston - ROFLMAO. They'd make her over to have her look human, then dress like her in the Halloween Parade this year. Heck, a couple of Ina's guys could have their own show with their decorating and food smarts.
therealchiffonade at 9:01PM on 08/25/08
Hmmmmm I smell a mutiny!! I would like to see anything back from Mario, Bourdain, Sara Moulton and East Meets West chef (can't remember his name). Reruns: 2 Fat Cooks? (British, can't remember name), reruns of the Galloping Gourmet, and Rocco. As far as what is currently on, Barefoot Contessa, anything Alton, anything Tyler, Flay BBq w/ B.F.,Guy Fiery, Jamie Oliver, Big Daddy, Essence of Emeril, Paula Dean at Home, not the party show, The Next Food Network Star and Dinner Impossible. As far as a sick, I can't believe what I am seeing, joke show keep Semi Homemade (but just for that purpose only). Ace of Cakes I like Duff, Mary Alice and Geoff. The rest of the staff don't seem articulate enough. Ray's 30 Minutes, that's a tough one. I think of the sake of all the drinking games and Ray sucks blogs ect. keep her on for that purpose only, but limit her show to only 1 a day and eliminate her other shows. As far as what i would like to add to the FN: more ethnic shows, Indian, African, Middle Eastern, Greek, Caribbean, S.American, Eastern Europeon, Asian, French, Jewish, Hispanic, Pac. Island, all over the world, not just going there and tasting it, but real specialty chefs sharing their techniques, culture, and recipes. Also a Vegetarian and healthy eating shows that don't put you to sleep. Oh and I forgot Giada keep the the Everyday Italian, but other shows, axe.
pjracz10 at 9:28PM on 08/25/08
I'd watch Alton read the phone book and still learn something about my kitchen. He's pretty high on the list of guys I'd like to kick back and trade lies with over some down home cooking.
I'm also an Ace of Cakes guy and feel that Mary Alice would make a better world of whatever place she worked in. Yeah, it's more entertainment than cooking, but it's better entertainment than you get on primetimemainstream TV.
ICA is fun and I try not to miss either new shows or reruns that I've not seen before.
Paula, Rachel, Sandra - a waste of time.
Nursie at 10:32PM on 08/25/08
I went from being a so-so, reluctant home cook to a fabulous and enthusiastic one by watching the old FN shows with Mario, Ming Tsai, Jamie, and--drumroll please--Alton Brown who in my world ranks in between Johnny Depp and Joss Whedon in stardom, cheese factor and all. Alton Brown especially for his scientific, step-by-step approach that makes cooking accessible and understandable for everyone. I miss those days!
I hardly watch FN anymore and would in fact rather watch Top Chef on Bravo. I do like Ace of Cakes, though.
buffy at 10:57PM on 08/25/08
Too bad Ina's "guys" are so bloody unattractive.... can't she get any cute gay friends? Sheesh. Or...maybe it's Jeffrey fault......
No to the Morimoto show. His English is as good as my knife skills or wait, my knife skills are better! Rangiri anyone?
Now Eric Ripert on the other hand - how fabulous is HE????
Pointy at 12:16PM on 08/26/08
I agree with pjracz10. Would love see a series of maybe six shows each on various ethnic cuisines. Serious basics taught by a real chef. Recipes on the website. Emphasis on the little tricks (i.e. Indians toast their spices before using them) that give characteristic flavors, and also transfer to most any style of cooking.

I started watching Michael Chiarello an Lydia on PBS when I was a teenager, they inspired my love of food and cooking. I was sooooo excited when my cable network finally picked up the FN, nothing else was ever on my television. Today, if I were to turn on FN when I get home from work, I would just get annoyed. First of all, why are there no cooking shows on at night?? I work during the day, can't watch tv then, housewives are not the only ones who would like to see actual cooking shows!
This is who I would keep: Michael Chiarello, Ina Garten, Giada DeLaurentis, Tyler Florence, Emeril, Alton Brown, Nigella Lawson, Jamie Oliver, Bobby Flay, Mario Batali............... Why you may ask? Well because I actually have learned from these people
This is who I would fire: RACHEL Ray, Paula Dean, Guy Fieri, the Neelys, the Neelys, the Neelys, oh did I mention the Neelys?? Sandra Lee.....Why? well because I learn nothing from these people, and they annoy the hell out of me!!
Next, I would get rid of all these "travel to a new city every week and buy local" shows, nothing against buying local, but why can't you go online and research where you are traveling to and then decide for yourself what to eat??
Then I would get rid of Unwrapped and the rest of these "Where did corn chips come from" shows, ok maybe they aren't so bad but at night all you see are these types of programs and challenges.
At last, I would get rid of the Next Food Network Star, the last few winners have not been my choices, I would like to see more skill and talent.
Until these changes are implemented, I will stick with PBS!!! :)
cupcakemcgee at 4:10PM on 08/26/08
i agree with AliceBlue -- get rid of the fluff and show some actual cooking technique that people can learn from. i couldn't care less where the neelys go, or about giada's 3-day vacations.
and i completely agree with those that want eric ripert on. just his little 4 minute toaster oven cooking videos on his blog i love to watch! (www.aveceric.com i think)
i do actually think it's ok to keep rachael. NOT SANDRA (who is an abomination), but rachael is ok, because for people that would rather order-in or cook something out of a box it's a good stepping stone to making cooking look less intimidating. and i think that's important. however, we'll put her in a crappy time slot ;)
megannesta at 5:51PM on 08/26/08
I have to admit I've learned alot from Rachel's 30-minute meals, as a working mother of two who still wants to cook good, healthy food for her family and not be in the kitchen all day. I'd probably strangle her if she were actually in my kitchen, though.
And amen to everyone who voted Sandra Lee off the island. How is what she does even considered cooking?
buffy at 7:48PM on 08/26/08
Never watched the FN, i have a small sausage, ravioli and pasta shop in albuquerques' north valley, i hear this same thread from many of my customers. i'll run some of my recipes by them and they'll say, never heard of that one on FN, and that is why i never watched it , i don't want it to pollute my creative impulses. they are shooting drive ins and dives in ABQ this week, many people have told me to go to meet guy, i didn't even know who he was, i'm too busy making sausages.
joessausage at 10:04PM on 08/26/08
FN has changed. Some shows have evolved into a masterpiece and some down the drain. Look what emeril used to be, until Alton Brown took his crown away from him. Yes, I do agree, Alton Brown is a great host, and fun to watch, but let's not forget the one person that I think was behind bringing in new viewers just from the fun factor, and that is Mr. Double Dare himself, Mark Summers. Yes there are some hit's and misses. The Neeleys do seem a little "blackface" to me in way. Can't stand to watch the New Food Network Star, his nervousness makes me nervous - in fact, I think it would've been better if Adam had won the new FN star. So here's what it boils down to:
Alton
Mark Summers
Take away a lot of the "taped show" formats, and bring back some of the live content - like when emeril was doing it
Look to the ratings on iron chef - I heard ratings were slightly higher when Jamie Oliver and Ming Tsai was on, - new show maybe?
Whatever happened to Yan Can Cook?

Being relatively new here, I am going to assume that Serious Eats is ANTI-Food Network.
DCraver at 10:48AM on 08/27/08
I would actually keep Aunt Drunkie for a comedy hour or something like that, provided her shows are clearly labeled as such. And perhaps she should do some community service for every episode aired, because, seriously, she should pay, not be paid, for that. Oh, and her show should only air late at night, because no child should see a grown woman being so giggly and giddy about an All You Can Drink Buffet For $12.99 at 10 am on Saturady morning.
brooke29 at 10:59AM on 08/27/08
DCraver:
I think Serious Eats isn't anti-food network per se. I think it is more that people remember when it was good and about the love of food (both preparing and eating it). I think there is a disappointment and a hope that it can pick up what decent programming it has and run with it to somewhere that is less about hip reality show programming and more about what it was intended to be originally.
For my money: if Julia Child would recognize it as food television, let it stay. If not, ship it over to Fine Living.
jpolk at 11:01AM on 08/27/08
...i do actually think it's ok to keep rachael. NOT SANDRA (who is an abomination)...
@megannesta and buffy... I used to watch Ray Ray but she lost me the first time she said, "I just get some bake-offs..." Then, I decided this was the perfect opportunity to cull what tidbits I can from the fast cooking piece and when she prescribes the use of a prepared product, I sub it with something else. For instance, I'd much rather have a piece of a nice purchased baguette than some insta-biscuits. My mom was a huge fan of RR - My mom was 77 and had nothing to prove to anyone. She cooked fields of food for jillions of people in her lifetime. She got a lot of "cooking for one" tips from RR.
As for Shamdra - nobody is going to paint a flattering picture of her in my eyes. Her "food" stinks and she keeps her guests so blotto they can't taste anything anyway. If TVFN added laugh track and appropriate disclaimers ("kids, don't try this at home!") I might lean toward keeping her on the air as a comedy. If even one person shortens his or her life by preparing Shamdra's Instacrap food, it's too many. She really has to go!
therealchiffonade at 1:13PM on 08/27/08
@therealchiffonade -- LOL! a sandra laugh track would be hilarious.
yes i am getting increasingly impatient with rachael ray. i did used to watch her show years ago, i got some interesting tips from her, but in the last couple of years (i guess when the RR brand empire started growing) it's become unbearable. but then i try and remind myself that she is trying to get people to see cooking as accessible and once they are comfortable making rice pilaf instead of microwaving it in an uncle ben's bag, they might move on to bigger and better cooking shows and techniques.
and agree with the baguette comment 100%!

@joessauage Let me know when you start shipping, I will be your first customer. I would love to see the list. of what you've got.
pjracz10 at 5:30AM on 08/28/08
@BangieB - No, you are not the only person who does not care for Alton Brown. While I admit that he is obviously knowledgeable about food & cooking, and the few recipes of his I have tried have turned out very well, I personally do not care for his television style or persona at all. I'm much more likely to look up his recipes on the FN website as opposed to watching his shows.
All that said, my personal favorites are Giada & Tyler. Both of them do a fantastic job of preparing dishes any home cook can make, but still coming across as professional and knowledgeable. Michael Chiarello does a good job of this too, and you can't beat Ina Garten for fabulous food and showing class in everything she does (although I do wish her recipes were a little more figure-friendly). I also enjoy Robin Miller and Ellie Krieger, both of whom make quality food that is healthy and easily prepared. Love Ace of Cakes...but more for entertainment than cooking.
I personally enjoy the travel shows, but I love to travel and eat my way around different places. As for competition shows...I like Throwdown with Bobby...but only when he gets beaten! Hahaha!
Please get rid of Sandra Lee. Please, please, please. What she does is NOT cooking. Get rid of Guy's cooking show while you're at it - he bores me. Keep Paula's Home Cooking, get rid of Paula's Party. And I couldn't care less about Unwrapped or How'd That Get on My Plate.
And one more thing....does anyone else think that Paula Deen is starting to resemble Tammy Faye Baker???
kimberlymac at 9:09AM on 08/28/08
Just in case this was bothering anyone else. I'm going to drink the Kool-Aid and go along with because I LOVE dives. I wish they'd give this show to the Sterns of roadfood and ambulane girl fame. They'd probably chew with their mouths closed too.
Please rest assured that the food Guy samples is used just for our shoot and is not then served to customers.
Thanks for watching.

kimberlymac... I think Tammy Faye would be insulted.

I've stopped commenting on the Food Network because they don't give a damn about anything we say, and to believe otherwise is just plain stupid. Like so many others here, I barely watch that network anymore. It's just down right painful to watch most of their new shows.
Boscompb at 9:02PM on 08/30/08
hunneybumper pretty much said it all for me. Just watching them "judge" The Next Food Network Star is all the evidence I need to agree that they really, really should all be dumped!
However, I love Ace of Cakes because it's about the people! I have enjoyed the new Big Daddy's. Aaron does a great job and teaches me something each time I have watched. Alton's schtick is what makes him
Alton, for heaven's sake!
I would really like to see a new show that addresses baking and only baking - from a-to-z.

Okay ... here is the skinny... Alton's Schtick is not schtick. That is really the way he talks and acts in real life. Keep him ...
Dinner impossible is an affront to anyone that has actually worked in a kitchen and been put in the weeds. Lose it
Unwrapped has run its course.....
Racheal Ray has way too many reruns .... lose her
Keep mario ... Great format ..... great content

Whether or not Alton's shtick is or is not a shtick, and whether or not it makes him who he is, doesn't really matter to me. If it's an act, I dislike his act. If it's him, I dislike him. Again, just my opinion. But to be clear: I'm not saying I *would* like Alton if he were different. I just don't like watching him, period.
BangieB at 10:19PM on 09/01/08
Totally agree with cupcakemcgee.
Loved the old Sara Moulton, Lydia, Mario shows. I learned so much from them. Now I think I only learn from Ina and Jamie Oliver. Hate the travel and how was that made shows. And the food competition shows.
lucylucy at 9:27AM on 09/02/08
I can't believe everyone that wants to keep Barefoot Contessa? It is by far the most boring cooking show I have ever seen. I wonder if it is a geographic thing, like no one outside of NY finds Woody Allen funny, but New Yorkers get him. I firmly believe that if Ina was not friends with Martha Stewart she would not be on Food Network. I agree that Paula Deen only gets one show. In fact, she only has one show now - they just keep changing the name and pretending that it is a different show. The farce that is Next Food Network Star should either be revamped to actually pick a cheflebrity, or they should call it something else. Seriously, Aaron McCargo wins and Kelsey Nixon is back in Utah catering?
WannabeTVchef at 9:39AM on 09/02/08
What I would love to see is FN getting the rights to re-run Julia Child's original PBS show. I wasn't old enough when it was on originally and I would love to be able to see it.
vox8ight at 11:46AM on 09/02/08
Just wanted to add I am always shocked to see how many people like Ina and Alton's shows. Ina I just find plain boring, and Alton is too much science, not enough cooking for me. The scariest thing, for me, about Alton is that people thing he's good to the point that it makes their mind go soft. I was semi-recently excited at getting to meet & greet Anthony Bourdain & Michael Ruelhman (sp?), and someone said to me well, they are not Alton Brown. Damn Straight.
bsouthgirl at 12:08PM on 09/02/08
Honestly there's so much snark and holier than thou here on these posts - I mean, really - is it necessary to suggest death, execution and torture to the FN stars you don't like? In favor of defending your allegedly superior sensibilities? I may have just realized that SE is not for me. I thought this was community of ppl concerned about good food.
Tobey at 12:24PM on 09/02/08
They must get rid of Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee!! I get so angry every time I see that show on the network. It is just a bunch of pre-made, highly processed items that get mixed together and then pose as a good, quick meal. That is not cooking! The show is an embarrassment to the food network.
Jodib at 1:11PM on 09/02/08
I agree that Sandra Lee has got to go. I'm sick of her color-coordinated outfits and kitchen. I'm sick of her crap food and I'm sick of her "you can serve anything if they are drunk enough" attitude.
Keep Ina. She may be kind of bland and her food isn't very healthy, but it is tasty and she actually cooks! Paula Deen can cook from home, but that stupid party show has got to go.
Both the Nealy's shows have to go, and don't just bring back Paula's sons. We really don't need shows that are nothing more than ads for cross-country shipping stable foods.
I love Alton. His shows are educational, entertaining and the couple of recipes he cooks on each show actually end up tasty. Because of the education he gives it's easy to adapt his recipes for your own tastes.
Bobby Flay is ok if you chain him to a grill, otherwise, forget him.
I really like Giadda's food, but the constant cleavage and the boob-cam have earned her the nickname of "Boob-arella" at our house.
I can see how Guy Fieri can rub people the wrong way with everything from the bleached, spiky hair to his insistence on pronouncing his last name "Fiedi," but he does appeal to young viewers and his food, while relying on entirely too much tequila, is actually pretty decent.
Another idea, how about running those early morning weekend shows again in the afternoon? Lots of us really enjoy sleeping in on weekends. We aren't all "hit the ground running and watch a show before we go to the farmer's market at dawn" types.
I can't stand that Sunny Anderson woman. Please, my son was a better cook (and more comfortable and adept in front of a stove and with knives) than she is when he was 12. That new show of hers, "How'd This Get on My Plate," is just, plain dumb. Anyone with any interest in food knows that dairy comes from cows, or goats. Puh-leeze.
Also, let's cut down on how crap food is made shows. Corn chips are extruded, ice cream novelties are molded and chocolate is poured over them, "spiral freezers" are common. We get it already. There is no need to show that same stuff every freaking night!
FN really needs to start listening to what people want and stop promoting people and shows viewers hate. Really.
Calichef at 4:12PM on 09/02/08
Please give Mario a better time slot! He's lost in the mash-up of midday shows that few people are able to watch. He deserves better.
Rachel Ray, Sandra Lee and Paula Deen should be exiled. Bring them to an island so they can work on recipes that include deep frying store-bought desserts in EVOO. Ugh.
cookierookie at 4:25PM on 09/02/08
I used to really enjoy "Calling All Cooks" and "Door Knock Dinners"--also all things Sara Moulton.
I definitely don't watch FN as much as I used to and neither do my Mom and 3 sisters (and one brother with a serious Emeril attachment).
But I do love RR and watch her NBC show as well. And keep Ina, Tyler, Robin Miller, Ellie Krieger and the Neely's. I take good notes when I watch "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives"--and take Guy's advice! I want to eat immediately every single thing Big Daddy makes.......drool, drool.
I turn off the TV the minute Alton Brown shows up.
anklet at 4:41PM on 09/02/08
It's all in the label. FN needs to become the FPN, The Food Porn Network, the food channel for people who don't cook. Those of us who love food and cooking need our own network with people like Bourdain, Ruhlman, Moulton, Morimoto, and Alton.
RI Swampyankee at 7:42PM on 09/02/08
Love everything about Ina and her show, definitely keep her..
Ellie Krieger too, love her and her ideals.. a show about healthy cooking without a fad diet twist or using ridiculous and unappealing igredient substitutions.. just simple, nutritious, and sensible eating.. keep
And I have to say I love Rachael too, not all of her recipes are ones that I would personally try, especially from the older days, but these days she's somewhat more refined, and since launching her Yum-O organization her focus has definitely shifted from mounds of cheese on everything to more healthful recipes
I do love Paula, but not so much her recipes.. she's one of the ones I would keep more for entertainment value, and an occasional dessert I'd like to try.. but I agree with getting rid of Paula's Party, UNLESS they take it back to the original format when it was intimate and charming, not so glitz and showbiz, where she didn't have a guest every show and it was just her and the small audience filmed at her brother's restaurant
Keep Alton, Giada, Tyler, Bobby (if it's Throwdown, I never watch his grilling shows), and possibly a couple of the newbies.. i really like Ask Aida and the premise of the show
And please bring back Gale Gand.. now there are no shows dedicated to just dessert, and she's someone highly respected who actually knows her stuff when it comes to sweets and pastry.. as an aspiring pastry chef I always looked forward to any tips and knowlege she passed on during the episodes
Oh yeah, and one old school guilty pleasure.. Two Hot Tamales, who remembers that one? lol
Control at 10:29PM on 09/02/08
No one seems to remember "How To Boil Water"! He was funny but they really cooked stuff. I am an accomplished cook and I have learned some great techniques from Alton and I respect his knowledge but this schtick on the "New" Iron Chef is grating. Yes, yes, yes, repeat the original Iron
Chef. Believe me that show saved me from complete meltdown at 1AM on a Saturday night after closing my restaurant, coming home completely amped up and the comic relief was just what I needed (with a soothing glass or two of wine). Sarah Moulton always an education, Two Fat Ladies pure pleasure. I'm tired of these wannabes. I agree that if they really need to search for a new "Network" star they should go to the top restaurants. Michael LaMonaco was another educator and they really need more of the ethnic touch, food from all over the world. Teach me how!
quaxo at 11:05PM on 09/02/08
@Tobey: I'm sorry that the back-and-forth here has turned you off to Serious Eats. This seems to happen anytime there's a Food Network thread. People really feel strongly about the network and otherwise friendly folks get a little angry. I'd urge you to check out other Talk topics and blog posts on the site before you leave completely! I promise there's more civil discussion going on here.
Adam Kuban at 12:02AM on 09/03/08
All that's happening at the FN is they're continuing to grow the corporation and demographics. Hence, Neely's and Big Daddy (Afro-American demo),
Guy Fieri (younger demo), Dan and the other gay guy who "won" the first NFNS, (uh, expand gay demo)...anyway, you get the picture. To add my show opinion, best shows are Jamie Oliver's most recent (I think the guy's genius AND great technique), Tyler's Ultimate, make NEW Boy Meets Grill, and lose Flay's other ego projects, anything Batali, D,D,and D's (just because I love good diner food and all the Guy we get is pretty much just him eating), and the three new A chicks, Aida, Alex, and Anne. I guess ICA still entertains me. Lose everyone else and hire a few newer cutting edge chefs from great restaurants and let 'em cook for us.
Just my opinion...I could be wrong.
onedrummer at 2:48AM on 09/03/08
Re: Ina. Lack of babblegene does not = Boring.
Ina speaks to viewers as though they might have a clue about how to cook instead of filling every second of airtime with mindless chattering about how "I'mgoingtostirthisandputthisinthesinkandputthisoverhereand..." Ina's succinct instructions make her a superior TV cooking coach. Her Night Time FM DJ voice is one of the areas where I give her highest non-cooking-related points. (Aspects of the show not directly related to cooking or technique.)
I heard new BC's are coming out and frankly, it's way past beyond time that happened!
therealchiffonade at 5:19AM on 09/03/08
I know I am in the minority here, and accept that. I love FN and since I am a person who likes to eat - not necessarily cook - the shows that are entertaining and tempt me outside my comfort zone are the shows I watch. I love Guy Fieri and would watch DD&D every day. Ace of Cakes and Paula Deen are also on my list as well as the Challenges, Iron Chef and Dinner Impossible. Some of the best cooks on the network, like Ina and Mario are frankly, boring to watch. I like the humor, the fun and the wild ideas the other shows have. I guess I am their target audience since the rest of you are so ticked off!
flabookworm at 6:07AM on 09/03/08
RIP Food Network. It's now called PBS, Fine Living and Travel Channel, with a bit of Bravo thrown in just for Tom Colicchio, Eric Ripert, Tony Bourdain and my favorite, Ted Allen.
I hear what FN did is demand a cut of everyone's restaurants, including those who built up the network in the first place (Mario, Emeril). After hearing that from a reputable source, I view any new "talent" chosen by the bean-counters with suspicion. No wonder they need contests to determine the next "personality" and use home cooks with no experience whatsoever. Like Sandra Lee, whose only expertise seems to be "tablescapes," color-coordinating Kitchenaid and kitchen window coverings, and cocktails.
What started as a novel concept is now mainly drivel because most of the people who can cook moved to other networks. Those who can cook (you know who you are) must have good agents/publicists to have sweetheart deals with FN that don't allow them to keep their hand in your pocket for part of your restaurant's gross profits.
tdl1501 at 6:28AM on 09/03/08
FN needs more real ethnic cooking shows, i.e. Daisy Cooks feat. Daisy Martinez or Ming Tsai's East meets West, and not the fusion cuisine they try to cook up like Ingrid Hoffman. Also, what happened to Dave Lieberman, who had a niche of making affordable food at home (and really knew how to cook too). I think they should make a new all french cooking show staring Boulud, Bouley, Ripert, and Ducaisse cooking in their restaurants.
Talent to keep: Alton Brown, Ina Garten, Mario B, Bobby Flay, Morimoto, Symon,
Talent to get rid of: Rachel Ray, Sandra Lee, Paula Deen, all of the next FN stars (except Guy on diners, drive thrus and dives), Elie Krieger, Ingrid Hoffman (too many others to name).
mepm231 at 11:44AM on 09/03/08
I'm pretty sure they don't get a cut from the restaurants, which i also have from a reputable source. However, once chefs sign a deal, it often covers merchandising, spin-ff rights, likeness, etc, so agreed there is definite money to be made.
FN has definitely become "talent-driven," and while they still have some great talent, it is called Food Network, and they shouldn't lose sight of the point.. food, silly!
I still find things to watch, but less than before, and it can be hit or miss. Fine Living is also owned by Scripps, btw!
ALTON BROWN FOR PRESIDENT!
(...of FN)
Laurel E at 5:38PM on 09/03/08
I agree with many of the comments here...but especially love @honeybumper's comments and yes, I would also add Morimoto...yes, he's a bit hard to understand sometime...but let him cook and I'll watch and learn more!
I would love to see shows on how to make sausages, (sausage guy in Albequerque sounds like a good one to watch!), and how to make beer at home. Alton did one show on it but as a home brewer there is so much more to learn! Also the wine and cheese show idea is great! Lets get some depth to these shows.
At first I enjoyed watching NFNS but it's all about personality now instead of the techniques and teaching. I want substance!
Ezzie at 8:39AM on 09/08/08
I'd love to see some ethnic shows. How about Indian and Asian, to name a few? I'd also love to see Anthony Bourdain again (With his sexy self!). Get rid of the Throwdown. I think it hurts the livelihood of people when Bobby comes along, hoodwinking them, and perfecting their signature dishes that they've made their living off of, not to mention the embarrassment and uncomfortable looks on people's faces. Why the need for that? Find something for Ted Allen, his talent's being wasted with that silly show! Keep Bobby, Tyler, Paula, Guy, Rachael, I like the new "Aaron McCargo, I don't like his stereotypical name "Big Daddy", but he should stay. I'm looking forward to seeing Adam Gertler's new show not so much for the food, it wasn't so special, but he was pleasant to watch, and made people comfortable. You couldn't help but like him. Now bring on Tom Collichio and you'd have a huge new female following. He's sexy, too!
sassy at 8:39PM on 09/10/08
therealchiffonade,
Thank you for explaining why people like Ina. I have seriously been scratching my head for years about it. So it is the way she presents what she cooks - the way she explains it. OK, cool. I kind of get that now. I do not, however, agree with you about her voice. When she speaks I think, "Oh, this is what Ben Stein would sound like if he took estrogen." To me, her voice is like someone banging something extremely boring against my temple.
WannabeTVchef at 12:49AM on 09/11/08
Let me give the FN a clue. because that is what is missing from this station. GET RID OF THOSE DAMN CHALLENGE SHOWS, NOT ENTERTAINING, NOT INTERESTING. Please get rid of RR, the 30min cooking show is horrible, I dont see a point in this show. I want to see REAL COOKS! TALENTED COOKS. Not perfect cooks, BUT TALENTED. Keep Alton, Ina, Sunny, Paula (one show puleese) borrow from PBS willya (these people know what they are talking about) Lidia, Jacques (the cook on the planet). What in the hell is the Food Detective, this show is horrible, my 8 year old niece thinks it for kindergartners.
Sandra, gotta go!!! The network has talent however sparingly.
