Favorite dessert when eating out?
Gelato/sorbet/ice cream are my usual dessert of choice when eating out. What's yours? A fancy souffle or just some coffee? Perhaps a little after-dinner booze?

Crème Brulée of course!

I'm always a sucker for the booze. A little tawny port or some good Cognac is irresistable. Otherwise, I love any lemon themed dessert and a good espresso.

I don't always eat dessert when eating out, but when I do - it has to be creme brulee.

I rarely eat dessert out....too many disappointing creme brulees, generic chocolate cakes and frozen cheesecakes.
I usually go for the after dinner drink instead too, but there are some places I do get dessert. The Indian place 2 blocks from me makes AMAZING fresh pistachio ice cream with ginger and a berry sauce. Must have.
Also the Frangelico Mousse at a local chophouse is to die for.
The bread pudding at the local British/Indian pub is great with the sticky sauce poured over.
Fresh-made tiramisu can make me happy if I happen to stumble across the good stuff.
Desserts at restaurants are a pet peeve of mine. If I go to a decent place and see one more brownie or with ice cream and fudge, or a warm cookie, or chocolate cake with chocolate frosting or generic wet cheesecake...bleh.

Something interesting, hopefully with fruit or interesting sweet/savory combos.

I seldom order desserts, but when I do, it's most likely to be something I seldom make at home. Cheesecake, for example. The other night, our regular place had home made cream putts. I had to have one of those.
Oddly enough, though, if we're at a restaurant for the first time ever, I'm much more likely to order a dessert than any other time.

I rarely have room for my entire meal, let alone dessert but a nice slice of apple pie a la mode would be lovely.

I am ever so picky. We go to the cheesecake factory and if they do not have the limoncello torte I skip dessert. I like a niced napoleon. Coconut layer cake. A cannoli. Lemon desserts are good too.

Well, not being a big sweets fan...I still peruse the desserts to see if there's anything unusual.
That said, I enjoy creme brulee and vanilla ice cream the most. Fried cheesecake, but only if it has strawberries and vanilla ice cream (just like Longhorn), is up there. One of the best made desserts I've had is ginger creme brulee.
On occasion, my husband and I will go into a restaurant only ordering dessert to share after having a meal elsewhere when the mood strikes us.

Oh, and I do feel like a glut too. Frequently, I have more than half my meal packed away in a box and may STILL order dessert if something catches my eye in the dessert section when I peruse the menu before ordering my meal (and plan for it).

Okay, I admit--as a kid, I LIVED for dessert. And not kiddie desserts, either. My parent's favorite restaurant had a dessert cart, very old-fashioned, complete with wheels, so I got to drool over all sorts of fancy pastries. Of course, my eye was drawn to eclairs, later followed with an obsession with Black Forest cake, made with chocolate mousse icing rather than whipped cream.
That said, now I am usually too full to order dessert--like sassylady, I have to take home my meal as it is! Also, if I want to have a really, really good dessert I want to be hungry enough to enjoy it and the best way to do that is just to have dessert, not have it at the end of a meal. So now I'm more likely to get a really good decadent muffin from a bakery or bake something simple and semi-healthy like cookies with dark chocolate chips and less sugar than I would get if I got them pre-bought.

Only Tawny Port for me. ;-D

Warm, comforting Bread Pudding with a white and dark chocolate sauce.

if profiteroles or key lime pie are on the menu, there's no way i can skip dessert!
cybercita at 10:21AM on 08/16/08
Cantina Laredo's Mexican Apple Pie with cinnamon ice cream and brandy butter sauce. I had a "throwback" dessert at Chamberlain's Steakhouse in Addison this week: Baked Alaska! I had to get it because when is the last time anyone had that on a menu? It was updated with mango sorbet and tropical fruit on the side. It was beautiful, light and delicious.

Todd English's pizza restaurant Figs in Boston has a to DIE for white chocolate hallah bread pudding--only to go! the perfect dessert with which to curl up on the sofa. other than that--i prefer to go out for ice cream where i know it will be good than risk a bad dessert.

I'm wit sadiepix. I would like to see a chocolate option on a dessert menu that isn't the typical lava cake-brownie-cookie thing. Unusual fruit and chocolate combos are nice, as are chocolate-spice (like a spiced hot chocolate). I think my favorite dessert lately is the homemade churros from one of our local mexican places. It's 5 smallish churros with chocolate, cajeta, and raspberry dipping sauces.

Anything chocolate particularly after spicy food.

I love desserts! Crème Brulée, cheesecake, sorbet, profiteroles, anything with pastry cream or buttercream. Chocolate cake with vanilla bean buttercream is a particular favorite, but I have to have a glass of whole milk to drink with it. Mmmm.
Calichef at 1:05PM on 08/16/08
i used to go nuts for creme brulee, but i had it made badly too many times (quarter inch of custard underneath an inch of burnt sugar. yuck!).
Ever notice that a place that has the best dinners in the world just does so-so with desserts? or the places with killer cheesecake don't do much else? we'll get dinner somewhere, decline dessert, then hit our favorite coffee/cheesecake place for dessert.

Love, love, love any type of warm fruit crisp or crumble with vanilla icecream!!
goldie725 at 4:47PM on 08/17/08
If deep dish apple crumb is on the menu it is a must with vanilla bean ice cream. Or, pistachio and vanilla gelato!
JacquelineS at 6:23PM on 08/17/08
Since I, too, always have that inner battle going on between being too full for dessert but too curious to pass it up - then am always disappointed in the resulting overly gloppy super-rich heavy you-name-it they bring out, I'd love to see an offering of a small plate of GOOD chocolates - individually wrapped or presented beautifully - to savor with that cup of coffee. Maybe there are places that do this already, but they're not in my neighborhood.
moibec at 8:33PM on 08/17/08
I usually go for the apple crisp/crumble/dumpling/pie a ala mode. Yum! Unless we're at my favorite Italian place, then Tiramisu - always.
PastaPerson at 12:22PM on 08/18/08
One of my most favorite desserts ever ordered is called "Study of Desserts" from a local fave restaurant. Dear god. It's so good. Has 3 desserts: Peanut Butter Banana Mousse Tart w/ Heath Bar crumbles; Drunken Smore w/ caramel drizzle; and chocolate brownie sundae w/ walnut caramel, irish coffee ice cream, and whipped cream. My BF and I decided to get dessert one day and ordered this. Could not believe how good it was.
I also like to order Creme Brulee and Chocolate Molten Cake and Cannoli.
