favorite apple? and how do you eat it?
out of the many fruits i love (berries, melon, bananas, etc.), i really do love apples. my favorite would have to be jazz apples, good enough plain or even with some peanut butter if i'm in the mood!

I was thinking of how much I am anticipating apples season this year! I love all sorts of apples, however, every year hands down I eat my way through a orchard of honey crisp...best by far!
Lilartist at 6:55PM on 08/05/08
My usual are Fuji apples and I eat them plain.
marieinla at 7:11PM on 08/05/08
My all time favorite is Pink Lady. I like mine sliced with peanut butter.
izatryt at 7:15PM on 08/05/08
granny smith... i like the tartness
MadelynRodriguez at 7:17PM on 08/05/08
I'm with MadelynRodriguez. Granny Smith all the way. Love it plain, in salads, and my favorite way (as some of you above): quartered w/ peanut butter.
I can't abide the sweeter apples. They all have an unpleasant "fuzzy/mealy" texture to me. though I do sometimes make my apple pies with a mixture of GS and Fuji for balance.
StripeyChef at 7:46PM on 08/05/08
I eat Granny Smith the most, as I can get them in the even early spring still tasting as they should, and I use them most for baking and salads etc. I love the tartness.
For right in season eating though (I love living in the fruit belt!) I like Pink Ladies and Honey Crisp. I am not much of a raw apple eater though, I tend to at least want them in a salad rather than out-of-hand.

It's a tie between gala, fuji and braeburn. I love them sliced, either on their own, or with cheese, or dipped in honey. Mmm...
brooke29 at 8:25PM on 08/05/08
I only eat apples when they are in season where I live in Western NY. And I will only have one kind. McGouan(sp?) Not too big, slightly tart but juicy. Has anyone ever heard of Grapples? They smell like grapes but look like apples!
joanpieroni2 at 8:34PM on 08/05/08
I'm with all of you who like the tart apples. If I can get Jonathans when they are just picked and crisp - those are my favorites. It seems like I have a hard time getting them anymore so Granny Smiths are a good second choice. Fresh or in apple crisp or my kids' favorite - cinnamon apples. My son used to take them back to college but told his roomies they were beets so no one else would eat them.
dutchgal at 9:11PM on 08/05/08
I have two I just can't pick between.
Fuji -- straight up, dipped in peanut butter, or accompanied by some cold sharp cheddar slices and summer sausage.
Granny Smith -- core and slice. Store in pineapple juice in the fridge. These sweet/tart slices are the best snack in the world! The acid in the juice keeps them from browning, and they stay nice and crisp.
Editmom at 9:19PM on 08/05/08
Store apples are my last pick for fruit, but being a Michigan native, I enjoy the McIntosh eaten 2 seconds after I pick it from the tree. The taste/texture of an apple that ripens on the tree is completely different from the ones picked for the grocery store.

the tarter the better for me. when i was in england, i would get these big green apples at sainsbury's that were so hard that you couldn't hardly bite them. and so tart that my eyes would water. bliss!!! does anyone know what they are? i've forgotten. they were labeled cooking apples because they really were impossible to eat raw, unless you're a freak like me.
here in the states i do like pink ladies. i don't eat apples anymore, though, unless they're from the greenmarket and new crop.
my favorite way to eat an apple is to bite into it and let the juice run down my chin. my favorite way to tart them up is to make them into tarts! with plenty of nutmeg. or into applesauce for topping potato latkes.
cybercita at 9:54PM on 08/05/08
McIntosh or Cortland in the orchard!
veggieout at 10:41PM on 08/05/08
FUJI!!! In any and every way possible...i think i need one now.
deliciouslysimple at 11:15PM on 08/05/08
OK...I'll be the dolt...
ANY apple except one of those "delicious" varieties...you know...mealy, no flavor...
thewrighttaste at 11:25PM on 08/05/08
Jonagold.
dbcurrie at 1:30AM on 08/06/08
pink lady, honeycrisp, fuji, jonagold, grannysmith, ok any apple that is "new" and not of the delicious variety, i have to agree with thewrighttaste, they are way too mealy! funny though as a kid they were the only ones i liked, i wonder if producers are doing something different, because i really dont remember them being mealy 30 plus years ago.
huneybumper at 7:46AM on 08/06/08
i love mutsu apples sliced very thin with a drizzle of honey a touch of salt and some chopped peanuts. seriously you ought to try it.
avryan at 7:58AM on 08/06/08
Honey Crisp, without a doubt.
marsbar at 8:58AM on 08/06/08
Yeah, Honey Crisp. Best ever.
seikel at 9:40AM on 08/06/08
@honeybumper...
I honestly think nothing has really changed with the "delicious" varieties. I just think we've been exposed to different types of apples and LEARNED. As a kid in Central Ohio, that was all that was available. Even though Johnny Appleseed planted trees, literally, within 15 miles of my home, it took a lot of years for the new varieties to "take root" and thrive in the Ohio climates.
I can go to local orchards now and find dozens of varieties of apples. My first exposure to anything other than reds was to Granny Smith in the local stores when I was a young homemaker in the 80s. I loved the tart taste, the texture, and they made my apple pies so much better. Now, I've been exposed to others and rarely buy grannies.
thewrighttaste at 10:10AM on 08/06/08
I love Mutsu too, but my absolute favorite favorite is Granny Smith with some good brie.
Josdean at 10:11AM on 08/06/08
Red delicious, either plain, with peanut butter or chopped up with rasins, chopped up walnuts, some mayo and sprinkle of cinnamon. Yummm
Maryland Crab at 10:32AM on 08/06/08
for a fascinating look at man's relationship to apples, i recommend michael pollan's book, the botany of desire.
i remember another couple of apples i have loved at the greenmarket: boskoop and gingergold.
cybercita at 10:39AM on 08/06/08
honey crisp apples are probably one of my favorite foods on the planet. seriously, when they are in season i can eat like 2 or 3 a day, especially those HUGE ones. oh man, i am excited for fall.
sarahlucy at 10:47AM on 08/06/08
Honeycrisp!!! Failing that, Fuji. The only way I can tolerate Granny Smith is with blue cheese...
cowprintrabbit at 11:29AM on 08/06/08
Fuji is my favorite market apple.
When I was a kid in Pennsylvania there was a wonderful early yellow apple called Grimes Golden. Very sweet and not good for shipping. Once in a while here is New Mexico I can find something similar called Champagne, but only at the orchard.
Blue Iris at 1:37PM on 08/06/08
I was a huge fan of the Fuji up until last fall when I was introduced to "The Honey Crisp", which I refer to as 'the crack of apples'. I can still enjoy a Fuji, but my god ... that first bite into a Honey crisp as it's sweet juice fills your mouth and the aroma floats up into your nose like a natural drug - there's nothing else like it.
And yes, eat it plain for the sheer, sensual enjoyment of it.
AmazonGoddess at 2:18PM on 08/06/08
New Zealand Royal Gala
Straight up!
hungrychristel at 5:22PM on 08/06/08
@AmazonGoddess...
YES!!!!!!
Apple Crack!!!!
thewrighttaste at 10:07PM on 08/06/08
Fuji and honeycrisp (even though they're hard to come by). Any way possible, but best plain.
beth1 at 11:28PM on 08/06/08
Macintosh or Cortlands, straight off a tree in the middle of a New England Orchard....then, later at home, peeled, buttered, sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, and wrapped in a round of pie dough and baked to perfection...
"Oh, sweet mystery of life, at last I've found you!"
juliebugsmama at 9:25AM on 08/08/08
I love Granny Smiths, just about any way. Plain, Stewed, with cinnamon, sugar, and nutmeg, in a pie, chopped in a salad, dipped in caramel, then in nuts...you name it!
PastaPerson at 9:41AM on 08/08/08
Gotta luv my McCoun apples. They're crisp, juicy and not quit tart, but not quite sweet either. Only problem - - they are only available here for a relatively short time (about 6 weeks +/-) and they have a relatively short shelf-life :(
bubbamom at 11:40AM on 08/08/08
The only apples I truly love are mountain apples that I've picked and snacked on from my aunt's yard in Hawaii. They are reddish, small, on the softer side when you bite into them, slightly sweet, and have a rose flavor.
The fluffy blossoms are beautiful too.
Cassaendra at 12:43PM on 08/08/08
Fuji, although (based on the comments), I think I'll try Honey Crisp... Apples with fruit dip: mix an 8-ounce pkg. softened cream cheese with 1/4 cup jam of choice. Let it chill and eat with any fruit. I think it's best with apples!
