Downtown Indianapolis Eats
I will be staying in downtown Indianapolis for a few days for a conference, and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest good lunch or dinner spots. The hotel and conference are downtown, so I'd like to stay in that area. From Google maps, it looks like I'm only be a few blocks from Monument Circle, if that helps.
Thanks in advance!

St Elmo's Steakhouse is a must if you love steak, very spicy shrimp cocktail, and possible Colts sightings! For local flavor, check out SmallerIndiana.com, and go to the user group called "Hole in the Wall Eating Club." http://www.smallerindiana.com/group/holeinthewalleatingclub
Too bad you'll miss the State Fair and all its fried wonders!

You should definitely check out Mass Ave. It's downtown, although a little ways from Monument Circle. The restaurants and bars are fantastic... no national chains to be found. Bazbeaux pizza is some of the very best in the city; The Scholars Inn is a perfect spot for a nice dinner or some drinks; R Bistro features a weekly changing menu of fresh, local ingredients; and my personal favorite is Yats. Yats is a super-cheap, unbelievably filling New Orleans spot. There are also five or six items on the menu, all served with rice and garlic bread. All of the etouffees are fantastic. Enjoy!

Seconding R Bistro. Locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and a creative chef.

Sorry to be naggy, but would it be safe to walk there from the Monument Circle area? I don't mind a 2 mile walk, but I also might be on my own and don't want to risk safety for a good meal - and I'm hopelessly cheap :P

The walk to Mass Ave. would be safe... Downtown Indy is a very safe place. I'll third the vote for R Bisto - hit the website (www.rbistro.com) to find this week's menu. Elements (www.elementsindy.com) is another good place in that area.
St. Elmo is a good place for out-of-towners... you can find a better steak but the history and ambiance are definitely unique. They have an offshoot called Harry & Izzy's that's a little more of a scene and one of the trendy places to go. Peyton Manning is one of the investors and can be spotted there on a somewhat regular basis.
Mikado is a great place for sushi/Japanese (http://www.mikadoindy.com).

Thanks everyone, this really helps - especially since my boss won't be able to make it (we get along really well) so I'll be out there alone, and I plan to cure my boredom with some seriously good eats :P

For breakfast or lunch there's Patachou on the Park. I agree with the recommendation for Yat's. Lots of good food for very little cash.
Yat's If you're concerned about the walk to Mass Ave, take the #17 bus (College Ave).

Shapiro's deli is an old fashioned jewish deli -- don't worry about dressing up.
