Do you think that you are a 'Supertaster'?

Awhile ago on Serious Eats, I know some of the board administrators tested to see if they were 'supertasters.' Supertasting seems to be a genetic sensitivity to certain flavors, like broccoli, coffee, cabbage, and so forth:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertaster

I've even heard that supertasters prefer lemon meringue pie to chocolate (perish the thought)!

I'm not sure though...as a kid I was very finicky. However, not in a supertaster way--loved the flowers on birthday cake icing, hated bagels because they were hard to chew, loved lemonade, hated most meats (except fried clams and chicken nuggets), hated vegetables but never had them very well prepared...not a supertaster, really, and once culture affects your taste it's hard to tell when you get older what your original, genetic preference was for in terms of food.

I think my parents must be nontasters, based upon their eating habits--my father used to use a half a can of parmesan cheese on his pasta, and my mother used to microwave meat (eww)! I think I'm probably a medium taster, though.

Based on what you know of supertasting, do you think you are a supertaster, or do you know any super/nontasters?

my ex mil was a definate non taster! SO's mom is also! i dont know of any supertasters. SO's mom hates to cook and when he was growing up everything was called "goop" not only for looks but also taste! The last time he went to hos mom's, she made kielbasa for him for dinner, she boiled it in a pot of water untill it was mushy!

If I ate dessert, I would prefer the lemon meringue to chocolate. I guess I would be a varsity taster, not a supertaster. Does that count?

Sometimes I think my teenage daughter is a supertaster. She seems to be able to detect atomic sized particles of onions in anything. She also can't stand most cruciferous vegetables. She will only eat broccoli if it is roasted to the point of resembling a broccoli chip.

But she also has a ferocious sweet tooth and will eat sugary treats that make me cringe to even think about them.

Maybe she's just picky!

I'm pretty sure I'm a supertaster, based on everything I've read/seen about it. By the same token, I'm also pretty sure my whole family are supertasters - there's got to be some genetic component.

I would have to say I am a supertaster-of course this is based on prior experiences and what I've read. It's a blessing and a curse all at the same time.

If something is placed in front of me I will try it, but most times there are items involved I don't care for and I can pin point it. Went to a party once and there were various wraps. I picked one out and everyone said how good it was-decided to give it a try. One bite was all I could muster. I knew there was something I didn't like involved (initial thought was swiss was used). Others that don't like swiss cheese claimed they loved this wrap. Found out swiss was in the wrap-but not sliced, just lihgtly grated in the mixture. To me, it was overpowering.

My mom made fresh iced tea-always did it the same way: lemons always fresh and perfect, etc. Sometimes though-it tasted not as good as others. I would ask if she did something different-she would say no and give me a look like I was crazy. Everytime I would ask what she did different the reason would be that she bought lemons from one stand in the farmers market versus the other stand she would go to.

There are many more instances but you get the point...

Maybe. I don't enjoy like alcoholic anything, soy anything and I can take or leave spinach, chard and the leafy brassicas. I have to doctor my coffee with sugar and cream.

There was a thread a few months ago about cilantro where I think someone suggested that those who find cilantro "soapy" are supertasters. I find cilantro soapy and still love it.

Go figure. Wish we knew more about this topic.

Oooops. Forgot to say I really don't like chocolate and get a headache if I eat much of it.

My daughter is a super taster and wow, its fun to deal with. Funnily enough she loves many things that picky children do not like - brocolli, raw cauliflower, fish. But won't eat hamburger, peppers, dairy products.

I took a test similar to the one the SE'ers did in the office, and I am one. The list of foods supertasters don't like in the Wikipedia article confirms it: I can't go near Brussels sprouts, grapefruit, olives, green tea. The thought of putting an olive in my mouth is akin to the thought of popping a clump of dirt in my mouth. Though I do like the taste minced olives impart to dishes.

And grapefruit juice? Why in the world would anybody want to drink acid?

The only exception on the list is alcohol -- I do love my wine.

And I've found that as I've gotten older, some of the foods aren't as objectionable -- just a case of the dampening of my tastebuds over the years, I think.

I'm one - I can taste PTC.

Strangely enough, I like most of the foods on the "supertasters don't like" list. I love sour and bitter flavors. Yes, I'm a freak. ;)

@jen -- what's PTC?

I'm sure I'm not a supertaster, and I'm happy I'm not. I looooove everything in the cabbage family.

I've got a friend who probably is a supertaster. It's a good thing. When we have luch, she gives me her broccoli.

I think my MILs sense of taste never really developed because of what she lived through when she was young. She can taste flavors, but really doesn't like one over another to the point where it actually matters to her.

I'm not sure if I'm a supertaster, but I'd certainly choose a lemon meringue over chocolate. For that matter, I've always preferred sweets that weren't just sweet, but had some tartness in them.

I also do taste the "off" taste in other foods way before anybody else does. For example, my in-laws buy shrimp salad from Thumann's (it comes in large 5 lb containers). It's actually pretty good, although I never buy ready-made salads. In any case, I'm always the first one to taste when it goes sour (at which point, I can't eat it, of course) - and it happens days before my in laws or even my Other Half can taste it.

@dbcurrie - It's phenylthiocarbamide, which is a chemical that tastes very bitter to supertasters, slightly bitter to medium tasters, and tasteless to non-tasters. In high school biology we licked strips of the stuff as a intro to genetics lab.

I am a supertaster and this is a topic I have researched quite a bit as I find it fascinating. A lot of the comments above can translate into subjective preferences; consistency is the key. Supertasters actually can be determined in a very scientific manner. Certainly the phenylthiocarbamide is an indicator, as supertasters are highly sensitive to bitter. But for the real test, you need blue food coloring, a magnifying glass (or mirror) and a hole punch. Put a drop of color near the tip of your tongue the size of the hole punch. Then use the mirror or a friend to count the number of taste buds on that spot. Most people will have 20 or less. A supertaster has 30 or more...often a lot more. Here is the best link I found that has some detail and pix. http://www.slashfood.com/2006/01/22/are-you-a-supertaster/
For me, this means that I hate coffee, citrus fruits, and salad (I steam all my veggies.) I am a big wine connoisseur. For me this translates into hating wines that have a very "hot" (high alcohol) taste, such as young new world reds. But I also dislike wines with bracing acidity such as sauv blanc or pinot grigio.

i think i have to be -- or i'm just horribly picky! same effect, either way. haha.
