Celebrity Chef Cookware?

OK, so last Saturday I was flipping the channels and saw Jamie Oliver on HSN selling his line of T-fal pots and pans. Personally as a fan of Jamie's, I was disappointed since I thought his looked rather junky, but I am unfamiliar with T-fal. This made me curious, since I could really use a new set or at least some pieces. Has anyone bought any celebrity chef's line of pots and pans? Are any of them of good quality?

I bought a few pieces of Todd English cookware. If they weren't so slippery on the bottom, I'd really like them. I had to toss the skillet, because I knew I'd have a disaster on my hands. Never saw a pan slip and slide on the stovetop like that.

I've used T-Fal a few times, they aren't bad.

I have the set of Emeril pots and pans. They're good. More lightweight than real All-Clad, but a hell of a lot less expensive.

My parents like the T-Fal from Jamie Oliver... but they just do a lot of basic cooking... I have the Emeril and I second what caviarandcodfish said!

I have had a Mario Batali enamelled cast iron dutch oven about four months. It is as heavy as Le Crueset and much cheaper but I'm not sure it's as good. It has developed a few tiny chips in the bottom. I use only wooden utensils with it. They also say in the booklet not to use the Mario over higher than medium heat. Don't remember that instruction with Le Crueset but it's been a long time since I've had a new one.

Otherwise I still love my early 70's Farberware (aluminum sandwich inside stainless) which I have always used regularly -- and my grandma's cast iron.

I got so excited when I happened to see a familiar red circle in the middle of a pan on one of Jamie's show:-) - back home, probably 70-80% of my cookware was T-Fal, and I loved it. It didn't have anybody's name "attached" to it, but it was very good.

I purchased my set of pans years before all the celebrity labels came to be. I have a set of Calphalon. I am always on the look out for a new addition and I admit I have been hesitant to buy celebrity brands. I recently purchased a Le Creuset "everyday" pan. I LOVE it. I really need a new 12" saute pan. My Calphalon is 10".

So, after everyone posts their comments here, I am off to BB&B to buy a new pan. I plan to go with the brand with the most recs here.

I have a Jamie Oliver set I bought on sale about five years ago. It's not the same stuff that I've seen in store lately. My set is not non-stick and doesn't have the red dot. It's regular stainless and i like it alot. Honestly the quality of the Jamie Oliver pieces I have is not much different from the All-Clad pieces I have. I'm very happy with Jamie's pots.

More love for the Emeril pans here. I also have Mario's 7 qt. oven I got at a whopping discount through Amazon, I believe - it's a rather sickly orange color (one that never made it to the stores) so I think that's why it was discounted. Works fine, though, and no chipping after a year's use.

I have some T-fal stuff. A stainless steel 4 quart pot and glass lid with a pressure cooker attachment and a 2 quart ss sauté pan. I love them. The non stick frying pan surface wore out because I have always cooked with cast iron and didn't know how to use a non stick pan. I'm sure it was a good pan, I just ruined it. I don't trust non stick pans anyway, my cast iron pans rock.

I have an Emeril cast iron stove top smoker, that thing ROCKS and I recommend it to anyone.

I have a set of Wolfgang Puck cookware that I bought for my restaurant. It met all my criteria and was reasonably priced. I figured if it lasted 6 months, I'd still get my money's worth.

I'm still using it. The pans are about 8 years old.

The pans are stainless steel, sandwich construction with riveted handles and a pourable lip. They are available at Sam's Club, albeit in a set with fewer than the fifty-million piece set I purchased long ago. They're inexpensive and would make a great gift for a first apartment dweller or college student. (Or newly divorced person.)

I got the Puck set available at Sam’s. I LOVE it as it is stainless steel and I can use anything in it as there is no nonstick lining. I have had it for about a year. I have bought many sets over the years from hsn because I liked the sizes and sets offered but they never lasted. I think I have had about 6 sets in 1 yrs so I am pleased to still have my Wolfgang Puck set in good shape.

I had a set of T-fal in college. I think a friend of the family gave it to me as a gift. It was far nicer than what other kids had.

I do not have any celebrity chef cookware, but not because I'm turned off by the celebrity. I look for good construction with good materials at a fair price. The name on the lid is irrelevant. Frankly when I started really cooking I didn't know the names of the famous cooking lines...I bought my first Le Crueset because I wanted to do osso bucco for 10, went to an outlet mall and headed into Le Crueset as a last resort. After some hemming and hawing,I walked out $125 poorer and with about 50 lbs. of porcelain clad cast iron. I don't think they make this size anymore, it's ginormous. Knowing what I know now about Le Crueset, I know it'll last a lifetime and then some.

Just an observation: I bought another smaller dutch oven at a Le Crueset outlet store and there is a mark designating it as a "second" not first quality. I have noticed that the enamel is not as stain resistant as the first one I bought.

I've got a Mario Batali Panini Press which is really a beautiful thing. Only problem is that there's now a few chips in the persimmon enamel on the point of the handle. I've no idea how they got there since I've used it only a few times. My Le Creuset pots I've used countless times and without chipping the enamel...

Oh! About 10 years ago I bought a set of Martha Stewart Copper Bottomed cookware on sale at Kmart (!). I think they were made by All-Clad, the quality really is good and I use the 3qt sauce pan everyday quite happily.

I also have Nigella Lawson's gorgeous Coucousiere. It's a work of art. It's stunning visually and is very well made. It works perfectly for a traditional (and time-consuming) couscous. It could be my most prized piece of cookware, along with my massive Le Creuset WilliamsSonoma Bistro pan. Ah... the joys of cookware.!

I received a Rachael Ray grill pan as a Christmas gift last year, and I'm embarassed to say that I love it. I can't say that it's the best pan I own, but we use it often and it's the closest thing we can get to grilling in our apartment.

I really need to purchase a dutch oven and I have my heart set on buying my first Le Creuset piece. Being that I am young and poor, I could use some advice. Should I bite the bullet- or are there similar quality brands out there for less $$$? First time poster... Thanks!

@jam114 - try Home Goods or Marshalls Or TJMaxx. They often have LC pieces for very decent prices. I haven't had any experience with other similar brands of enameled cast iron cookware, but I do love my Le Creuset - and I found a couple of them (the 5 and the 9 qt dutch ovens) at Marshalls!

Great idea. Thanks! I do enjoy Marshall's. I will probably head there this weekend.
A friend once told me that the Le Creuset cookware that is sold at the discount stores are 'knock offs'. I didn't think she was right... but does anyone know if there is any truth to that?

I also have the Puck cookware from Sam's. Mine is going on three years old, and I still love it! It works fantastic for everything. I haven't had any problems at all with it, and it cleans well. Really, it works fairly comparably with some of the All-Clad pieces I have, the difference being that the All-Clad is heavier, so it works better for a few small jobs.

Tfal is good for non stick things. I have one on and off. Once a non stick peels in any manner out in the garbage it goes.
I have Wolfgang Puck stainless and its nice quality and was given a consumer reports good rating in the top 10.
I have one Rachael Ray 12-Inch Stainless Steel Nonstick Skillet, this was a gift from a friend 2 years ago, I have used it only once and no it was not horrible.
The Tood English green pan is also being sold by Calphalon and I am not crazy about the surface.
Emerils All Clad is made in China so I am not ever getting any of that.
God only knows what is in the metal.
Mario's sets are too expensive for the size. I need me some big pots.
My Wolfgang Pucks are 4 years old and they are still lovely.

I have a couple Wolfgang Puck saucepans and I really enjoy cooking with them. They are a little bit on the heavy side, but they hold up very well. Plus, I purchased them at Marshalls for a great discount!

if you ever heard the truth about something listen up. the todd english green pan is junk. oh, when you first get it an egg will not stay in the pan, it will slide right out. its the prettiest blue with black on the bottom.
well after a few months you can't fry an egg or anything else because it sticks, your food has a chemical smell and the pretty black bottom scratches all to pieces. it's junk.
i don't know what they will do when all those millions of people who bought it on hsn makes the same discovers as i did.
i also purchased the emeril stainless steel and had to send it right back because the cast iron grill pan had a big scratch in it and one of the saute pans had a piercing dent in it.
i'm still looking for a good set.

We need to start a good pots and pans thread.

Thanks for all your responses. I haven't been in Marshall's or TJ Max in a while to snoop around for some good deals, but I keep looking at the Wolfgang Puck set at Sam's Club. Glad to know so many of you are so happy with it.

@jobug_tincher...I"ve read the reviews for the English green pans on the HSN website and one after the other absolutely slams these things. I've never seen so many negative reviews of a product yet HSN keeps selling millions of them. They also, supposedly, have the Good Housekeeping Seal....Whaaaaaaaa??????

Very happy with my Puck pans bought years ago and fairly happy with my Cook's Essentials purchased on QVC. Still love All Clad and LeCreuset but they're way to heavy for MY weary bones.

this isn't exactly pots and pans, but i have a nigella lawson whisk -- it's the little one she uses all the time that's about the size of your palm. i am obsessed with it! i use it for vinaigrettes, eggs, anything in a smaller bowl.

i'm tempted to buy some of the Bobby Flay kitchen stuff that's at Kohls. A buddy of mine from college is on the design team for 'em.

@ jam114: when I was young and poor I bought a Le Crueset roaster (orange) in Filene's Basement in Boston. Two subway rides later the Filene's bag, otherwise known as newsprint, was dead and gone. I was marching through Harvard Square with an orange roaster under my arm. A guy stuck his head out of a bus and yelled "I'll be home at six, baby!"

The roaster lasted at least 30 years. Treat yourself! If a cutie approaches, talk to him.
