cancel account
Idea for improvement: on the "edit my account" screen, add a button for "cancel my account". People will occasionally want to cancel their account, and I couldn't find any way to do it.

There is an edit link, right below where it says "Hello, Don Luis!"
No blog will give you a "cancel" link because it would lead to data integrity issues - if Don Luis were deleted, the website wouldn't be able to show this page anymore (since your account is tied to it). They would have to delete every post you've made, all discussions you've started, etc - and for what? If you don't want to use the site anymore just click "Log out" and you're done.

Not that I want to cancel my account, but there are other sites that do allow you to cancel if that is your wish.

@paimsey: you couldn't be more wrong.
In fact, looking a little deeper, I found this:
How do I delete my account?
We're sad that you would ask that! :( But if you must, please contact support@seriouseats.com and we'll take care of it.
I can't imagine where you came up with that bit of fantasy. I can't imagine any service like this that required mandatory membership for life. There is a huge difference between canceling an account and logging out of one.
By the way, I never said I wanted to cancel; I just want the option.

I'm guessing they just disable your ability to log in - which isn't any different than logging out and forgetting your password, for example. You still exist.
Deleting your account when there are posts + comments using your name would necessitate deleting all your posts + threads. It's certainly possible, but a lot of trouble and a bad idea.

exactly -- there is a difference between canceling an account and deleting all content produced by the user of that account. i think this is an argument of semantics and that you are both right on some level.

"Deleting your account when there are posts + comments using your name would necessitate deleting all your posts + threads."
Not necessarily. It could just mean that your handle at the bottom of the post would no longer be a link to any profile page, it would just become plain text. This is all pretty much automated with good code.

@Don Luis: Deleting your account would then delete this very Talk topic!
The FAQ page was incorrect in its use of the word 'delete' (it has been corrected). To preserve the integrity of the comments and Talk topics, we do not delete but instead we deactivate accounts.
If you would like us to deactivate your account, please email us at support@seriouseats.com .
