Autumn Candy

A colleague of mine at work a couple of days ago brought in what seemed like a good idea at the time: candy corn-flavored Hershey's kisses. Now, I like Hershey's kisses as much as the next person, and some of their extensions on that line have been really tasty (the caramel ones are wonderful). However, this particular kind...well...not so much. It reminded me of the various types of candy that you would dread getting whiel trick-or-treating as a child. You know the ones...and they were differnet for everyone. I never liked the taffy or (choke) the off-brand Smarties (only the real ones would do).

What were the ones that you dreaded during this time of year? Whether they were what you tried to trade after Halloween or whether (worse yet) your parents bought them because they liked them, and then you forced to eat them, due to a lack of other candy in the house (really, mom: Nestle Crunch? Are you kidding me? Yuck!)

And more than that, what were your favorites? My mother made up for the Crunch bars when she would finally relent and get the mini Snickers, Kit Kat or Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (which I swear have gotten smaller over the years, by the way).

Well, I do look forward to candy corn, come fall, but those Hershey Kisses sound questionable...

I used to love Kit Kat's and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, snickers were okay, as were milky ways. I definitely favored the chocolate over the sugar (like lollipops), though not plain chocolate (like those mini hershey bars--I had no appreciation for plain chocolate at that time...now I'd much prefer a simple dark chocolate bar!)Honestly though, I was a chubby little thing--I probably ate whatever was around :)

I hated getting dum-dums what a waste of time even unwrapping those. Sweet tarts were another candy that might get your house egged, I mean comeon where's the chocolate?

luswin06--you are my candy twin--I hated Sweet Tarts and Jolly Ranchers, yet for some reason my skinny friends would trade their chocolate for those things--sometimes I wouldn't trade, just to be persnickety, but peanut butter cups, candy corn (which has a more 'savory' taste than the fruity sweets) and other chocolate stuff was my favorite. Not big on the Hershey's or Snickers, but I think I liked Milky Ways, Hundred Grands, and so forth. Now, I'm a super-high quality intense dark chocolate woman.

Hershey Kisses tended to get smooshed at the bottom of the treat bag with Tootsie rolls and spider rings.

Funny, Traveller, my mom always insisted on the Crunch bars too, because I think she thought they were 'healthier' because of the fact they had 'cereal' in them--eww, but I ate them anyway, like you ;)

For some reason, I was a sucker for anything in fall colors--cupcakes decorated with pumpkin mallow candy, chocolate and peanut butter based stuff in gold, brown, and red foil--just seemed to taste better b/c of the presentation.

Dum-Dums were always camouflaged in a white tissue with a rubber band, made to look like a ghost with little pen dot eyes.

Sweet Tarts and Jolly Ranchers...eeew! The Jolly Ranchers always got stuck to my teeth and I never liked that. Plus, I always seemed to get the "green apple" flavor, which I hated.

Funny, though. I never got Hundred Grands. Maybe it was a regional thing. Sometimes, if we were really lucky, we would get mini Pearson's Nut Rolls.. And my grandmother always had mini Pearson's peppermint patties (which always tasted better coming from the freezer).

Nestle Crunch was a favorite, so were Whatchamacallit's. I liked Sixlets and Krackel bars too.

I didn't care for anything with peanuts in them unless it was like a Reese's peanut butter cup, too much caramel, would get stuck on my teeth, or too sweet (ok that's weird to say when talking about candy) so I wasn't fond of Snickers, 3 Muskateers, etc.

Yeah, those silly lollipops (Dumdums) were a waste of time lol.

Oh yeah, I like candy corn too, but only in small doses just like all the other candies above. I am not quite as fond of the ones with the brown stripe / chocolate (autumn mix?) ones though.

those chewy generic peanut things in the black and orange wax wrappers used to depress me as a small child and they still do.

I used to love Milky Way bars (a lot!), but as far as I've been able to figure it out, what was sold in Europe as a Milky Way bar is what's known here as Three Musketeers - just chocolate covered mousse, no caramel. What you know as Milky Way, I know as Mars...it's all very confusing:-). So I guess I should say that I used to love Three Musketeers then...

^brooke, I lived in the UK for 2 years and was always confused by that as well. In America 3 Musketeers (one of my great loves, too, as a Trick-or-Treating child) was a shell of chocolate with a light, chocolate cream center--mousse like you said. No peanuts or caramel. American Mars bars (which I was never that fond of as a kid) have nuts and I believe a sort of nougat like center and no chocolate innards.

Not quite candy, but in the 'autumnal hall of shame' are the houses on Halloween that gave out apples with coins in them wrapped in silver paper. I mean, even if I wanted to eat a healthy, mealy Macintosh apples as a kid, they must have known my parents were going to throw it out because of the razor blade scare!

I'm not a fan of candy corn, black licorice, junior mints or any chocolate that has liquor or marshmallow in them. Other then that my mouth welcomes any other candy or choc.bar.

We were swamped with Clark bars as kids because they were made here and were really cheap. It kinda turned me off peanut butter for life. We would dump our treat bag halfway through the night and gave our parents all the Clark bars to redistribute and swapped them out with the good stuff our parents had bought. Milky Ways, 100,000 Grand and 3 Muskateers were our faves.

i dont like to eat candy corn neccesarily but i think they are cute as heck and love them in my living room in the fall...those little black-and-orange-pull-your- fillings out peanutty things make me think of fall...not exactly sure what they are though...but it always seemed like snickers were the most desired and least obtained, we'd have some serious trades on the living room floor for snickers...

@cybercita--I feel your pain!! I still hate them. I also don't care for the unflavored "autumn mix." However, there are these little pumpkins that are lightly orange flavored and are the best ever. I have made it my personal mission to never buy bad trick-or-treat candy to inflict upon trick-or-treaters.

when I was younger, halloween meant endless noshing on whatever candy there was. seriously, stomach aches from eating too many sweets? pshhhh. never. no matter what. is that normal?

My sister and I would dump our goodies on the living room floor and trade for favorites, but after a couple days of keeping them separate they ended up in one huge lump anyways. on that first night though, she got the things with nuts, I got the sours. she got the chocolate bars with stuff (crunch, crackle, etc... except I think my dad stole most of that), my mom got the mr. goodbars (still no idea why she liked them) and I got the creamy chocolate and 3 muskateers! reeses, we both wanted. weird things... neither of us did.

i was strange as a child, i loved it when people gave out those little bags of potato chips, it was a real treat because I dont think my mom bought chips more than once or twice a year. my all time fall candy though, which no one ever gave out :( was vermont maple candy, my mom would order some every fall and boy was it tasty stuff.

I was never crazy about candy corn. Still don't like it much. Give me chocolate!!! As far as Halloween candy goes,

Hated:
The orange- or black-wrapped generic squishy candies,
Bit-o-Honey (stuck to my teeth), Mary Janes, Licorice (especially black),
Bottle Caps, Circus Peanuts, Necco Wafers, Coconut Slices

LOVED:
All the brand-name candy bars, especially Marathon Bar
Burnt Peanuts
Candy cigarettes (tasted awful, but we thought we looked cool!)
Wax lips (ditto)
Peanut Butter Bars (the crispy brown & white striped ones)
Tootsie Rolls (only if they were fresh)
Tootsie Pops

And my absolute favorite (non-chocolate) candy:
Sweet & Sour Charms suckers!

Hated: Mr. Goodbar, Crackle, Crunch, Smarties

Loved: the black and orange chewy candies everyone else hated, non-chocolate flavored Tootsie Rolls (especially vanilla in the blue and white wrapper), Hershey bars.

The best part was that there was one woman who lived around the corner who gave out FULL SIZED, brand name candy bars. We never saw her any other time, but she was our favorite neighbor.

Hated: all those generic hard candies especially the ones wrapped in that faux strawberry wrapper, Nestle's Crunch, Krackle or any other kind of chocolate with krispies, tootsie rolls and pops
Other hated non candy items: getting raisins, plastic wrapped apples or carrots, pennies, getting toothbrushes in the treat bag

Loved: Brand name bars especially Snickers, Reeses, M&M's. also small snack size bags of Doritos, chips -also one house every year gave everyone a goody bag with all name brand candies--WE LOVED HER! I would switch my costume and then go back again...:o)
Loved (non candy items) getting a 10.00 bill in my bag one year...

I've never been a big fan of hard candy like jolly ranchers, lollipops, etc. I'm also not a fan of tootsie rolls

My favorite candies were the chocolate ones - peanut M&Ms, Reese's, Three Musketeers, etc.

i hated mary janes, circus peanuts, and any palmer mocklate as a kid, loved peanut butter cups and krackels the most. always traded my tootsie candies.

funny thing is now i am addicted to those mary janes! i used to hate them so much, you guys should give them another chance!

Fall candy? Hmm. I think those candy corn pumpkins are my fave....but they are so sugary....I love roasted marshmallows....so I choose that.
