Anyone been to Matsugen?
I'm thinking of taking the hubby there for his birthday -- he loves Japanese food, the more authentic the better. I've read some good reviews and some that were lukewarm -- any SE-ers been there? I'd love to hear your impressions. Thanks!

I've been once, for lunch, and thought the food was very very good, especially the inaka soba and the bakudan. Nothing made my eyes roll back in my head, but I was happy with the clean flavors and interesting textures. If your husband likes authentic Japanese I think he'd be pleased.

I went...but under atypical circumstances where I was closely watched by waiters and seemingly everyone else in the restaurant (taking photos for Ed's review, haha). On the upside, the waiters are nice and attentive, and the restaurant is pretty. The only thing I ate in its entirety was the porktastic shabu shabu, which was very good if you like shabu shabu. And pork.

I have not gone, but a good friend who has had her fair share of Japanese food said it was horrible. After 66 (his previous restaurant in the same space), I'm very skeptical of the place. But this is coming from a Japanese person who is very picky, especially if asked if something is "authentic".
You might want to ignore me.
