Where have the top-split hotdog buns gone?

I wanted to make Maine crab rolls and Maine slaw (a whole other story) for the Fourth, but neither Food Emporium nor Whole Foods seems to carry top-split buns any more. I butter-grilled the inside of two hamburger buns, but it was just wrong. Anyone got a source, short of driving to Portland?

Look (or call ahead) for top split buns made by Pepperidge Farm, Arnold's and Freihofer. They all make them. The "typical" hot dog buns are called classic. Wishing you luck!

We get them at Trader Joe's, actually, if you have one near you.

@Perky:Had gotten either Pepperidge Farm or Arnold's but they don't seem to be carried anymore. Is Freihoher a regional brand.

These are SUCH a regional item. They don't seem to exist in the Midwest.

I miss the top split buns too, but I have a major problem with most mass produced hot dog and burger buns, they seem to taste like cardboard. I go to a local grocery that makes their own buns, they actually have taste, and i can request them unsliced.

I'm fairly sure that Cook's Illustrated has a 'best of' baking book that has a recipe for them--they have lots of unusual, traditional regional bread recipes, like for anadama bread.

Thanks, HeartofGlass, but I don't want to bake them! They are usually an impulse buy, when I decide I want crab or lobster rolls that day. Only cooking for two, baking a slew of rolls when I only need a couple of them--and in the summer, too!--is not feasible. I just want a local source!
And, huneybumper, even mass-produced rolls taste great after having been fried in butter, which is a requisite for seafood rolls!
