What's delicious in Jersey City?
I'm about to move to Jersey City from Williamsburg. Please tell me about delicious things there. From checking out all of the groceries on my walk to the path train, I felt that there was definite promise.

Oh man you are in for a treat!
I've been living in Jersey City for about a year now, and I am still discovering everything...
I live near the Grove Street Path, so I can only really report on that area, but below is a list of some of the places I suggest you try..
Soul Food- 354 Grove St: Great southern cooking...I went with my family and we tried most everything on the menu..service was a little slow, but it was slow because they spend so much time cooking everything..
Marco and Pepe - 289 Grove St: Really good selection of New American food and wine, casual and fun. excellent mac and cheese, and you can buy Balthzar bread from there if you need it with your dinner from home!
Madame Claude Cafe- 364 1/2 4th st: Great french food in a small and intimate space. It is BYOB, so you just buy a bottle from one of the many liquor stores and bring it over. Prices are very reasonable. The pate plate is very good, and I always recomend getting the soup of the day.
Pecoraro Bakery - 279 Newark Ave: AMAZING bread..They are open at random times, but if you go early saturday mornings you usually get the pick, the stuffed sausage bread is my personal favorite and a good value for $4
Enjoy the area, and let me know if you find some new places your self!

Boulevard Drinks on Kennedy Boulevard (Journal Square) is a little place serving tropical drinks (non alcoholic) and great hot dogs. Small natural casing Sabretts prepared on a hot griddle.

Jersey City is abuzz with good eats. I second all of Caity's suggestions.
Check out my blog which is brimming with other options too. Below are a few links but if you search Jersey City you will find more! Good Luck!

izzy's mama - good call on the saigon cafe...that place is fantastic, the owners are super friendly and the food is always consistently delicious...
I would also add Ibby's for falafels...not quite as good as Mamoun's but damn good nonetheless...
The Brownstone is the best diner I've ever been too...The Bourinas family are the sweetest and their food is fresh and fabulous...
For fancy food, I'd go with The Light Horse in Paulus Hook

One more thing...if you have a car, do your shopping at the A&P...steer clear of the Shop-Rite...it's cheap, but the A&P is out of this world...an amazing butcher, fishmonger, tons of fresh fruits & veggies, a decent "foreign" foods section and a kickass spice section

Thanks again to you all for all of this.
I was walking around the neighborhood last night after picking up my keys, and I checked out that stretch of South Asian shops on Newark Ave between JFK Blvd and Tonnele near Journal Square. !!!
If anyone has particular recs there, please share. I'm a bit of a grocery store hobbyist, so your pics on those would be very exciting.
I'm eyeballing the degree of the crowdedness in the dosa places to pick out the one that I'm going to try first.

I live right by Tonnele ave and Newark ave so i know that area really well.
That block on Newark av is great for Indian food (the Thai place isn't bad either) and groceries. A block north of JFK has a good Filipino market and a few Filipino restaurants around it (and a bakery). Bolo curry never has a crowd (and i suspect won't be open very long) but it's good (i get delivery from there all the time).
on 1&9 before Tonnele circle there is a Chinese/Korean market called the 555 Asian market with really good fish and a good hot food bar. 1 & 9 also has the White Manna diner which is supposedly famous for it's burgers.
As for Grocery shopping i usually go to path mark or shoprite for 'normal' things and hit the various ethnic places for 'other things' there is also the Twin City supermarket on Sip ave that isn't bad and has a lot of south American ingredients.

You have to go to Little India by the Journal Square PATH and also check out all the Filipino food just around the corner. There's also this great little place called G Bakery & Restaurant on Newark Avenue that has yummy Colombian food. I've been living in Journal Square for the summer with my grandma, and I spend most of my time eating in Hoboken and Manhattan, but I have found a few things. Good luck!

Dosa Hut in Little India is the best!
In the downtown area, Ox is my favorite restaurant and the owners/waiters are really nice and the food is fantastic. There is also Sava for homemade Polish food and Buon Appetito - they have the best Italian sandwiches. On grove street.
If you have a car, I would just go to Trader Joes in Edgewater or the Whole Foods there, though A&P is definitely a step up from the Shoprite.

Also if you are going up to edgewater check out the Mitsuwa Marketplace. Besides being good for Japanese ingredients they have a good Japanese food court (i love their raman)

If you have a sweet tooth, don't miss Torico's (Erie and 1st). Over fifty flavors of homemade ice cream. Try the avocado. :-)

what's the best way to get to edgewater without a car?
sloppydelicious at 7:41PM on 07/31/08
Sadly, Edgewater isn't served by the light rail (it turns west near Lincoln Harbor and goes underground until Tonnelle Ave). Check with NJTransit.com for bus service.
JerseyJeff at 10:41PM on 07/31/08
if you are interested in going to the Mitsuwa Marketplace (I don't think Trader Joe's and whole foods is worth the trip) there is a shuttle bus that goes there from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Yeah it may seem strange to take the path into NYC and then take the shuttle to edgewater but it'll do in a pinch.
