We are having the traditional bbq, Juicy burgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, lots of salads, fresh watermelon and icy cold beer and lemonade. I feel so retro :)

Heading down to Ocean City MD tonight... Crab, crab, more crab, beer, and crab. Maybe some form of fried stuff on the boardwalk. Oh, and crab. My buddy and I are having an Iron Chef battle of sorts although we still haven't decided yet on the rules of engagement, and I don't know how well equipped the rental house is, or what kind of ingredients we'll have access to. Or how hungover I'll be...

Here in Luna Pier, MI, the 4th is celebrated either the Saturday before or after, with a city-wide yard sale from 8 - 2, music on the beach starting at 7:30, then fireworks launched from the pier in Lake Erie after dusk.
As this summer's beachhouse concessionaire, during this-Saturday's gig I'm BBQ'g 60 lbs of spare ribs, which will be served with slaw or potato salad, baked beans and pop ... along with our regular menu of hot dogs, nachos, Flint-style coneys, and Blue Bunny novelty ice creams.

Steamed blue crabs! (actually, I won't touch 'em, but my Baltimore based family has had a Fourth of July crab feast every year since waaaay longer back than I can remember. I think they haven't missed a year since the 1930s or so. It'll be a sad day when it's just me and my two cousins left and the tradition dies.) I'll be eating grilled burgers and homemade slaw and potato salad. And I think the hubby is going to practice his newly learned cake decorating skills to make a cake that looks like a slice of watermelon.
We're actually going to see fireworks on Saturday night - an outdoor concert played by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - and it'll be a picnic of fresh bread, cheese, and fruit. And maybe a pasta salad if I get myself together enough to make it...

Dogs from one of America's best sausagemongers: Otto's in Portland, Oregon. Maybe some spicy spuds too.

* not for the kids! The three grand dogs!

Juicy cheeseburgers, roasted corn on the grill w/cumin butter, fresh green beans with new potatoes. And let me not forget the strawberry shortcake and a bottle of Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio!!
dianeb at 5:55PM on 07/03/08
Roast turkey sandwiches (I'm roasting a turkey breast right now), potato salad and pickled veggies. Chardonnay and beer to go with.

Having the flu or similar, I'm doing nothing but sleeping this 4th punctuated with sips of water.
What I'd love to have? Watermelon, huli huli chicken, bulgogi, laulau, rice, and Hawaiian-style macaroni salad (no onions).
Cassaendra at 9:27AM on 07/04/08
Yesterday (the 3rd) when everyone arrived, we had the traditional North Carolina Beach dinner: steamed shrimp, caprese salad (tomatoes and basil picked from our garden), fresh corn on the cob (husband ate three ears!) and your choice of key lime or blueberry pie. Tonight it will be the elsewhere discussed butterflied BBQ leg of lamb, green salad, new potato salad and chocolate lave cake on the roof as we watch the fireworks in three counties!
smallblondemom at 10:09AM on 07/04/08
American living in Canada here, also nursing an upset stomach, so no bbq today. But I do want something fun for dinner. Maybe burgers and potato salad if I can drag my sorry tush to the store.
wellred at 10:43AM on 07/04/08
I'm going off of Martha Stewart's recipe for lamb kofta (found on this site), subbing in ground turkey and making it into burgers. For dessert, a simple lemon chess pie recipe I got on Epicurious.
stumbler02 at 12:27PM on 07/04/08
Neighbors are bringing over some grilled chicken. I'm making a bunch of different, simple salads and go-withs.
I'm a horrible baker but I'm also making a Pineapple Upside Down Cake. It's just about the last thing I would want to eat on a hot July day but it was requested of me, what can I do?
TastyNewEngland at 12:39PM on 07/04/08
Making dinner for my husband and myself: baby back ribs, baked beans, corn bread, cole slaw, and mint-fudge ice cream sandwiches (with homemade mint ice cream courtesy of a David Lebovitz recipe, and double chocolate cookies). I have some sangria soaking in the fridge as well.
culinaryrabbit at 2:28PM on 07/04/08
Wasn't planned but...I ended up eating 2 1/2 pieces of sweet breads from a local Mexican panaderia, followed by a fresh bagel. :) Very patriotic, no? haha...I crave turkey too for some reason.
Pammeh at 4:41PM on 07/04/08
Ribeye steaks, baked potatoes, and corn on the cob, all off the grill. Gonna get started in an hour or so. (I'm in California - so there!)
minstrel at 7:16PM on 07/04/08
We did burgers and dogs, but all the sides were with a Mexican flair, as we were with my brother-in-law's family. Beans, rice, Nana's wonderful squash dish with corn and cotija cheese, Papa's homegrown corn on the cob with lime and chile, fresh salsa and guacamole, and my contribution: bacon-wrapped chicken cubes, dredged in a mixture of brown sugar, cayenne and chili powder and baked @400 for 12 minutes...spicy, caramelized goodness.
