Toaster Oven Flambe
So Saturday night I turn on the toaster over to make dinner and I hear this strange bzzzzzzzzzzzz noise and then whoomp! my toaster oven bursts into flames.
Happily we have 3 fire extinguishers in our small kitchen (paranoid or just very prepared? I let you be the judge.) and the fire remained contained within the workings of the toaster oven. Now it's over 4 years old, and I had suspected it was on it's last legs, but I hadn't thought it would do this.
Which got me thinking: I can't be the only person this has happened to. Has anyone else had an appliance die on them- go out in a blaze of glory as it were?

My sister's dishwasher had a similar conflagration - it was a short inside the door and they had to redo that whole side of their kitchen due to smoke and water damage.
Since then I have not turned on my dishwasher and left the house like I used to...

yikes! That's the exact reason I won't use a crock pot unless I'm at home to keep an eye on it. I'd never be able to turn it on and leave for work and be able to concentrate.
I won't turn on/run any appliance unless I'm home.
I haven't had any fires/shorts but I'm not taking any chances.

I once had a blow dryer catch fire, but this past March, the wires in my furnace caught fire. It was contained, but the smoke poured out of the heating vents. I was terrified. A house full of smoke and I couldn't find the fire. Now, my first floor heat pump is non-functional and home owners doesn't cover it.
I was "self-cleaning" my oven one time, and it wouldn't turn off and cool down. I was afraid of fire. My daughter pulled the lever and it broke. We turned off the power and called a repairman. It turned out that a little cylinder tube had burnt out and replacing that would have fixed it, if my daughter hadn't broken the lever.

My father-in-law was a fire battalion chief. He insisted that the toaster and all small appliances be unplugged when not in use.

My microwave burst into flames once with no provocation. I hate those things. Once the flames were out, I put it on the patio where it sat until trash day. I wouldn't have one now, except for well-meaning family who can't comprehend someone who loves to cook not having a fully equipped kitchen...by which they mean a microwave and toaster.
