Taste: Brewer's Yeast vs. Regular Yeast
Someone once told me on this board to sprinkle brewers yeast on popcorn. I have yet to do so, but did try it with regular yeast as is was the only thing in my cupboard. Is there much difference?
P.S. how many ounces in a cup of cheese?

a cup of cheese is 8 ounces.
You should not eat baking yeast right out of the package. However nutritional yeast is used as a popcorn topping, it is a different kind of yeast. It is a cheesemaking yeast and used by vegans. There are many kinds of yeast. Because it is a live organism you would check what your eating before you eat it.

Whenever I make a batch of popcorn, I first use a vegetable or olive oil spray (such as Pam) and use it so that the brewers yeast and salt will stick. Makes the popcorn taste buttery without the fat and calories.

Are you sure that wasn't me who suggested it way back when over on eGullet? I have made that exact suggestion in the past and it's really good but regular yeast would most likely be less than tasty if used in the same way. When I lived in Ithaca NY back in the early 90's the local indie film houses (Cinemapolis and Fall Creek Cinema) had a wide variety of popcorn toppings at their snack bar. real butter and brewer's yeast is very tasty on popcorn. Indeed.

some of the difference is intensity--baker's yeast is much, much stronger than brewer's yeast, to the point that, eaten straight, the flavor would be pretty overpowering, and might even make you sick.

sorry, jerzeetomato, but a cup of cheese is not 8 oz. it's 8 fluid oz, but that's what a cup is. cheese is not weight-volume equivalent.
1 cup of cheddar, shredded weighs about 4 oz, while 1 cup of grated parmesan weighs 1 3/4 oz.
brewer's yeast is more cheesy and umami than regular yeast & will coat the popcorn better. i'm sure they have similar flavors, but brewer's yeast will taste better than "not too bad", at least i think so!
