a good few soups call for Sherry as an ingredient. Is there a best one to use?

Dry sherry.

JerzeeTomato is right... when cooking, it's dry sherry. Cream sherry is good to drink if you like sweet drinks, but I only use dry sherry for cooking.

is there a brand thats best? Am I buying this from my grocery store or my liquor store?

Liquor store. Do NOT buy cooking sherry, which is loaded with salt. You can get a decent fino for $10-15.

Sherry is my new best friend, I put DRY sherry in gravies, most soups and sauces. Sherry just makes that extra umf in dishes.
