Strange combos

I saw someone actually put ketchup on their cinnamon raisin bagel...left me speechless. I know I go for a few strange taste combinations; what are yours?

53 Comments:

Maple syrup on scrambled eggs.

i dont think its strange but peanut butter and salt, hot chinese mustard and saltines, nori spread with a thin layer of peanut butter and sprinkled with hot pepper flakes, cream o' wheat made with milk and lots of salt. hmm i think they may have a point about being addicted to salt, i'm seeing a trend. i also like a lite sprinkle of salt on chocolate cake :-S ithink i'm in trouble

peas and cranberry sauce

Peanut Butter and Cheese sandwich
Peanut Butter and crumbled potato chips

Mustard spread on the top of a grilled cheese sandwich

watermelon and crackers

When I was little I used to eat toast, cream cheese, ham and ketchup open face sandwiches for breakfast, sometimes when I'm hung over I still do. My dad eats bacon and peanut butter sandwiches - that's a heart attack waiting to happen.

@huney - I, too, sprinkle salt over chocolate cake - my father used to do it many many years ago and got me hooked. In general, I quite fancy sweet & salty combos.

I've mentioned on another thread that I like to sprinkle my buttered toast with sea salt underneath a thin layer of orange marmalade, but frankly, I don't think it's odd at all. We've always eaten watermelon and feta in our house, but this is definitely not strange.

A slice of provolone on a thin slice of pound cake or a halved sweet roll. Preferably, slightly melted. With a swirl of ketchup, if it's melted (@bessfour - see, this is coming very close to ketchup on a cinnamon raisin bagel, because "a sweet roll" could easily be a cinnamon bun. I don't eat raisins though).

Speaking of "sweet & salty", grilled shrimp & sausage skewers basted with plum sauce are pure heaven.

Sometimes I like having a spoonful of salted sour cream with all kinds of stuff, from pancakes to waffles to quiches, which is sure to raise my husband's eyebrows (then again, he's lactose intolerant:-)).

Whole grain mustard on top of an omelette.

Again though, none of this seems odd to me:-).

My sister enjoys strange flavor combinations such as a ham sandwich with honey mustard on cinnamon raisin bread. She also enjoys dipping slices of pepperoni in grape soda. When we were young we used to combine foods that didn't seem to go together and then eat it to show how brave we were... I sort of outgrew it, she sort of didn't.

Crumbled potato chips over vanilla ice cream.

It's a childhood favorite that I stilll crave from time to time.

white mushrooms dipped in Miracle Whip

bacon n pnut butter sammies......hot dogs n pnut butter.......pnut butter n jelly sammies w/ cayenne pepper.......guess i got a pnut butter thingy goin on here...huh?....also.......maple syrup an pnut butter on pancakes...mmmm

Oh man. My mom used to eat tuna salad (tuna & mayo) and canned baked beans, slightly warmed. She wouldn't mix them together but put them on the same plate and take alternating bites.
I NEVER tried this or understood it!

My grandma used to put mayo & seas. salt on avocado slices. Talk about calories!

I just remembered my MIL used to serve my daughter and me tuna salad with pickle relish and peanuts.

My grandfather, who was Pennsylvania Dutch (they like to have 7 sour and 7 sweet things on the table) taught me to eat sour pickles with chocolate cake. I still ear it every once in a while. And I eat macaroni and cheese sprinkled with sugar- don't know why, I just always have. And growing up, my Dad had to have bread and potatoes at every meal- so I still make spaghetti w/ meat sauce and a side of mashed potatoes and butter. So fattening, but SO good!

I tried hot sauce on a Krispy Kreme once. It wasn't bad. It kinda had that sweet-hot thing. My husband's family has these two oddly disgusting combos-- leftover biscuits in leftover coffee and canned tomatoes, crushed saltines, with mayo mixed in. The stench of the latter is horrendous.

I like to dip Doritos Nacho Cheese chips into cream cheese. I got turned onto this by my godson's mother when she was pregnant. She even squeezed lemon on top of it, but Bitter had to draw the line there, word.

@BITTER - I like Fritos with cream cheese, but I never thought of that as strange. hmmmmmm. No lemon here either. Wet chips? I don't think so.

Rice and yellow mustard.

Chocolate dipped potato chips.

-Peanut butter and dill pickle on pumpernickel bread (me and my mom)
-Strawberry cream cheese on a Zingerman's garlic or everything bagel (weird customer)
-Ramen with ketchup (my co-worker)
Tomatoes as desserts and sweet juices (everyone in Korea)

This will tell you how old I am: When Laverne and Shirley was on, I started drinking milk and Pepsi b/c Laverne did! It was actually really good, kinda like a bad version of a root beer float! I also went through a phase of dipping all French Fries in mayonnaise. Someone told me it was very European, so, naturally, I had to do it! I often wonder if I'm the only nerd who wanted to appear more sophisticated than my zip code and my years!

oh, and peanut butter and heinz salad cream on ritz crackers as a kid- I had forgotten about that!

I blame it on my mother; when she was pregnant with me the only thing she could eat in the first trimester was onion rings dipped in vanilla soft serve...

Syrup on my Eggs...Mmmm (I hear ya izatryt!)
Peanut Butter and Cheese Sandwiches
Peanut Butter on sliced cheese
Peanut Butter mixed in Oatmeal
Peanut Butter and syrup on pancakes
Cheese and Honey on crackers
Peanut Butter and Honey on Pound Cake
Fries dipped in Mayo or Sour Cream

I'm sure I'll come up with more later.. :) This is all for now!

BIL likes peanut butter on fresh corn on the cob.

I'm buying stock in Peanut Butter, right now!

I'm embarrassed but... sticks of Velveeta dipped in super-hot BBQ sauce. I swear, I only keep the Velveeta on hand to make dough ball (bait) to catch catfish! Meanwhile, the catfish like cornmeal mush with Velveeta and powdered strawberry Jello. Ughhhhh.

Cottage cheese with yellow mustard mixed in.

@Butrflygirly...Jif or Skippy?

When I eat shoyu ramen at home, I always make a tuna salad sandwich (mayo, canned tuna, crushed black pepper, a little basil, chopped dill pickles). Alternate bites. I love the taste combination. I often take a shower before eating ramen. Not sure why, but a fresh bowl of ramen after a bath/shower tastes the best!

I almost always make macaroni or potato salad when we make chili w/ rice. I love the flavor, cool creaminess of mayonnaise with chili. If I am too lazy to make the salad, I'll put a tablespoon of Kewpie mayo on the side. I'll take a tiny bit of mayo amd scoop some chili and rice. Chomp.

@Bessfour: Has to be Jif. Nothing else matches in my book. :)

Oh wow...some of these are quite strange!

I like putting buffalo sauce in my chicken ramen noodle soup.

Hillary
Chew on That

Tuna sandwich with chocolate milk.....take a bite then a sip....mmmmmm!

my wife puts cheese on her pancakes and eats ketchup with everthing. I was horrified one Christmass to watch her whole family put ketchup on prime rib! As for me I like penut butter banana and fried eg sandwiches.

Peanutbutter and anchovy sandwiches
Cheetos and Vanilla ice cream
French Fries and tartar sauce
Ham and butter sandwiches
Sardines, cottage cheese and jam on english muffins

@nhfoodie - I've been known to put cheese on my pancakes too:-). never ketchup on prime rib though!

cold hot dogs and cool whip. cannot bring myself to try, but i have heard that it is delicious.

As a child, I loved potato chip sandwiches on white bread with mayonnaise.
Yesterday I saw someone with an urge that, frankly, was disgusting. He came into a restaurant where they serve good southern food. Many of us Southerners like hot pepper & vinegar on our greens (turnips and collards). This many picked up the pepper/vinegar bottle from the table and took a sip.
Didn't mind that he liked it, but hated that he just drank from the bottle. Of course I told the server, who winced and moved the bottle after the man left.

I used to make sandwiches containing just cheese, potato chips, mayo and a touch of mustard. I think the habit started because when I was younger, a lot of events (academic competitions and the like) only served cold cuts for lunch, and as a vegetarian, I wanted something a little less boring than cheese on bread. I still put potato chips on deli sandwiches sometimes, if they're available.

I don't know if I'd want it now, but I used to dip things like french fries and potato chips into chocolate pudding. Now I really like fries with mayo, especially if they're sweet potato fries. I'm not a huge fan of ketchup, and even on burgers, I need to cut it with mayo.

I like to mix marmite with either peanut butter or butter and spread it on bread. Peanut butter and butter is also a yummy combination. Also butter and honey. (And obviously, peanut butter and honey!)

The salt on chocolate cake thing mentioned above intrigues me, and I might need to try it sometime :)

Growing up, we ate a lot of pizza at home (every Friday night!), and I liked to put various sauces on the leftovers.. bbq, honey mustard, etc, and also things like parmesan cheese. It wasn't particularly good pizza, but dressing it up really helped (and it was always better the next day, anyway, preferably cold or lukewarm).

And.. I'm rambling :)

Grilled cheese sandwiches with chocolate chips and basil (thank you, Giada!)

@Finsbigfan: I like Tuna Fish sandwiches on Rye with Strawberry Milk-ever have that? YUMMM.

~A layer of Cream Cheese on a Tuna Sandwich is delish. Gives it an extra layer of creamy goodness.
~French Fries dipped in Honey Mustard
~French Fries dipped in a Milk Shake
~Honey Mustard on a Grilled Cheese Sandwich
~Can not do without Mustard in/on Potato Salad (if not included-I add my own on what I take)
~Apple Butter on Pancakes topped with Warm Syrup
~Apple Butter on Crackers
~Peanut Butter on Apples
~Peanut Butter, Cinnamon, Syrup, and Banana Sandwich-grilled or toasted

I knew I'd come up with more..:) Still feel like I am missing some though..

I always put vinegar on chili, pepper on cantaloupe, and, of course, salt on watermelon
.
I, too, love chocolate covered potato chips, but not the wavy chips, I want the regular thin chips. It's sweet, salty, crispy and crunchy all in one. (My four major food groups?)

I have always eaten french fries with mayo and catsup, in fact when I was young my friends and I would share a large platter of fries and 'frost' them (quite heavily, in fact) with mayo and catsup. Along with a soft drink, that might have been our main meal of the day as it was cheap and filling. Of course, now I settle for a half-dozen fries dipped in a bit of mayo and catsup. And THAT'S on a 'splurge' day. (I also like french fries with tartar sauce now, a friend showed me that one about 10 years ago.)

ALSO, I still eat peanut butter and banana sarnies, but NOT fried or even toasted, just good bread, good peanut butter and sliced bananas on top.YUM! (For a variation, Nutella works too.)

More still: Anchovies straight from the tin as a snack. Pickled herrings with sour cream. Pepsi over ice with liquid flavoured coffee creamer mixed in...try hazelnut or almond. My snacks are safe for the most part, from friends and family members. I am seldom asked to share...LOL!! And, if I don't have a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, a Hershey bar dipped in peanut butter is fine too. Or, try a piece of toast, or a toasted English muffin spread with peanut butter and grated Hershey bar on top, maybe nuked for just a few seconds to really soften the chocolate. That's my favourite breakfast when I'm splurging. All you need is a large glass of ice-cold milk to be in heaven.

I could go on, but I've already written a book. I just LOVE talking about food!! I get easily carried away. Sorry,

sea salt and chocolate.
cheddar cheese and apple pie.
blue cheese and anchovies.
curry and bananas.

@Butrflygirly - yes! Cream cheese on tuna with sliced onions and cucumbers. I think I'd better go to the store before lunch - good thing it's right next to the gym!

I guess I came up with a new one two days ago - I spread a thin layer of sour cream with dill & roasted garlic over a pineapple pancake and poured blueberry sauce on top of that. It was absolutely delicious!

@brooke29: That sounds great! But I want Strawberry Sauce on mine..Garlic makes everything great I think. :)

@cowprint: YAY! So glad you are a fan too. I like plain cream cheese or the veggie cream cheese on that sandwich...So yummy. I know what I am having tomorrow for lunch. :)

Which reminds me of some other combos:

~Plain Brownie: I will eat plain but do like to spread Creamy or Chunky Peanut Butter on Top
~Plain Brownie: I like to spread Cream Cheese on top too (Plain or Cinnamon are good)

@brooke29: I saw you mentioned the watermelon and feta combo above on 7/12. I need to give you extra propers for encouraging me to try it! I really like it. :)

No one thought that the chocolate-dipped bacon on last week's revised "Dinner: Impossible" seemed a bit odd???

@Butrflygirly - Yay! I was almost embarrassed to write about that one:-). I have no doubt it would be spectacular with strawberry sauce!

@Susquehanna - I'm just glad you tried it and liked it, because the watermelon and feta combo is truly a match made in heaven:-) Now, have you tried watermelon with balsamic vinegar, or better yet, balsamic vinegar reduction? It's incredible!

@Butrflygirly - cream cheese on a tuna sandwich
@cowprintrabbit - added cucumbers and onion.

I WANT!

@Perky: It is a must try. :)

raspberry jelly, cream cheese, and turkey on a bagel
bologna, butter and peanut butter sandwich
my friend and his brother would eat ketchup and swiss cheese sandwiches

I like tabasco on vanilla ice cream. DO not ewww till you try it. Hot and cold its sooo good.
I like horseradish bacon dip on BBQ potato chips.
Honey mustard dressing on french fries.
Peanut butter/fluff/seedless raspberry jam on banana bread.
I would rather have a melted slice of cooper sharp on my bagel than a schmear unless I am having fish on bagel, them it must be a shmear.
Cranberry sauce on a turkey sandwich.
When I was a kid I only would eat a bologna sandwich if it had crushed fritos on it and yellow mustard.

Peanut Butter and Egg Sandwiches.

My boyfriend's mother also told me recently that her father used to put peanut butter on burgers...not sure about that one, but the egg combo DEFINITELY works...

Fries in a Frosty (I don't know how other chocolate milkshakes compare...)!

B Que potato chips dipped in apple sauce.
Mac and cheese with ketchup on it.
Pizza with small canned smoked oysters on top
Onion rings dipped in soy sauce
