My favorite cold cereal is _____

This was one of my talk questions back in Dec...so what is new in your cold cereal world today? What are your favorite add-ins? Kind of milk? Time of day you most often eat cold cereal? Must be eaten out of a special bowl? Brand loyal? Let's talk cold cereal!

71 Comments:

Crispex! With milk and sugar. I don't eat cereal that much, but there's usually a box handy in case I'm too lazy to make breakfast.

Life, followed by Special K. In fact, I'm eating some Life right now.

Life is my favorite. I don't typically add anything to it outside of organic milk, so it won't give me diarrhea. When I do, then maybe bananas or honey. Gone are the days of eating Life cereal in a glass putting strawberry Quik watching Saturday morning cartoons. The most frequent time of day I eat cold cereal is...at night for dinner, any time of year, out of my Chococat bowl. It's the perfect size.

kashi heart health toasted oats with light plain soy milk, for dinner when nothing else will stay put. the carbyness seems to help settle the tummy like nothing else.

my own homemade granola. this batch has pecans, almonds, pistachios, sunflower seeds, coconut, freeze dried mango, blackberries and raspberries, and a light scattering of oat and barley flakes.

i rarely eat it in the morning. i usually have it for a late night snack. i top it it with almond milk.

"when I was a kid" throwback: Golden Grahams.
now-Raisin Bran Crunch, Grape Nuts, Granola-I like my crunch. Any bowl handy-but always with barely enough ice-cold 2% milk to cover. mmmmm.

Crispix is my favorite....but every now and then, a bowl of Frosted Flakes really takes me back.

I am not a big cereal eater, but if the mood strikes, I eat 100% natural granola with nonfat milk.

This is simple bang up food at its best!!!

Homemade bircher is sensational and a great low GI way to start the day. We have it on our restaurant menu and I always get one of my chefs to make me a little extra for me to snack on in between cooking hot brekkies. its especially good when the oats have been left overnight in the fridge to soak and they are cold when eating! So yum!!

Soak oats in apple juice for a minimum of 20 minutes- preferably overnight. Add freshly grated granny smith apples or any tart apple, a good spoon of thick yogurt and some lucious organic honey to sweeten. Mix togther and then serve topped with lightly toasted almond flakes and a few fresh berries if in season.

Enjoy the flavour and good health its giving you.

The Kashi version of Shredded Wheat is my current favourite. Kashi doesn't have its full range of products available in Canada (at least, where I live) and I really want to do some cross border shopping to see what cereal I find.

I generally take it with non-dairy milk alternative but I'm picky about my brands. It's unfortunate that I don't like Silk soy, because that's what Starbucks uses. I only like some brands of hemp milk and look for brown rice milk without added oil.

Plain, yellow box, simple Cheerios. P referably in my cheerios, heart-shaped bowl using my Cheerios spoon. :) Failing that, straight out of the box.

Also, a close second is Honey Nut Cheerios...always by the handful or in a small bowl.

Yum!!!

Special K and Honey Bunches of Oats - with juice or milk, always on the side.

Spoon-size Shredded Wheat - the unsweetened variety. With whole milk, no sugar or anything else. I have a sentimental attachment to Product 19, but I haven't had it in years.

I eat cereal for breakfast every morning, mostly Cheerios and Corn Flakes, but my favorite is Honey Nut Chex. Soooo good.

I start my day off with a bowl of 1/2 all bran and 1/2 Kashi Go Lean (not crunch, just the original). Add a sprinkle of cinnamon, a few splashes of milk (just to make it moist, not flooded), a handful of blueberries, and a few diced strawberries. Mix and enjoy!

In the evenings, sometimes I'll munch on sweet cereal like frosted flakes, honey nut cheerios, or Cap'n Crunch. I know that they are pretty much pure sugar, but sometimes that's all I want :)

peanut butter puffins with unsweetened vanilla almond milk is truely out of this world.

My own homemade granola, with a splash of ice cold almond milk.

I still love Kashi 7-grain puffed cereal! It has no sugar in it at all, which means I can sweeten it to my taste, and I've loved puffed grains as long as I can remember myself. I can easily eat it milk-less, but usually have it with 2% cold milk...time of the day? I just may get myself a bowl right now!

Love the Kashi cereals but my heart belongs to Go Lean Crunch. It's so crunchy that I can't hear anyone when I'm chewing. In this respect, it reminds me of Cap'n Crunch.

I'm with huneybumper and CanadianFoodie on the Kashi on special occasions;

but I LOVE CHEERIOS! The multigrain are really nice. They have such a childhood smell!

Lucky Charms with strawberries or maple frosted Shredded Wheat with blueberries and Silk Light Plain Soy Milk. Haven't had either in a while though. I've had the same box of Multi-grain Cheerios in my cabinet for a while.

Cracklin oat bran with vanilla soy milk or vanilla yogurt.

Life kinda-sorta, but it's losing its charm after the 10+ boxes I've consumed in the past half year. Hmmm, anything peanut buttery is what I crave now...

I'm in a Cheerios rut.

I don't actually eat cold cereal often, but when I do, I don't like sweet cereals, and I despise cereals that get soggy. Cheerios fits my criteria, so I don't stray too far. Every now and then we get cereal samples with our newspaper, and most of them don't appeal to me -- too sweet or too soggy or both. So, when I'm shopping for cereal and I'm faced with a zillion choices, most of which I've never heard of, it's a lot easier to just reach for the Cheerios, because it's safe. Chex are okay, too.

When I was a kid, I didn't mind the sweet, but I despised the sogginess factor. So, mom would buy cereal, I'd eat til it got soggy, and that was it. Bleh. So we tossed a lot of cereal. I always wanted to eat it dry, but she always insisted on the milk in the bowl. Looking back, I probably would have wasted a lot less cereal if she would have let me had the dry cereal along with a glass of milk.

Cheerios, without a doubt. I'm lactose intolerant, and Lactaid milk has a strange aftertaste. Cheerios get rid of the aftertaste, so as far as I'm concerned, they are the world's most perfect cereal. :)

My favourites have not changed much since childhood: Life, Spoon Sized Shredded wheat (eaten hot), Kellogg's Bran Flakes (the blue box with William Shatner on it), Sugar Crisp (it's still called "Sugar" Crisp in Canada, not Golden Crisp), Shreddies, Corn Bran...I could probably go on. Now I usually eat ceral as a bedtime snack. As a kid I ate it at both breakfast and before bed. And I love most cereals soggy (except for Sugar Crisp...and Cheerios).

I love Corn Flakes.

I do not buy honey bunches of oats or i eat the whole box!!! I really don't care for most cereal. If I have a bowl of whatever kind it must be crunchy other then that i don't care.

Back when I was a kid 'CW Post'. They stopped making it about 2 decades ago. Nothing in cereal interests me as I still want my CW POST back!

(I may have to try this 'Just Bunches' stuff, its supposed to be the closest thing available)

Mmm...to answer my own question...Kashi Cinnamon Wheat Promise is my current favorite, doused with a few splashes of whole milk, eaten in my yellow bowl with a smiley face in the bottom of the bowl...btw I need to eat with an iced tea spoon or it somehow doesn't taste right. Mostly eat cereal in the a.m.

What's the yuckiest cereal you have ever tasted?

fruity pebbles. i O.D.'d on it as a kid, but it's always held a speical place in my heart.

lucky charms or life. regular life and not the cinammon kind.
usually i eat out of one of our big soup mugs, and often for dinner or a midnight snack. rarely for breakfast

I don't eat a lot of cereal (once I start, I can't stop! I just love it too much!), but my favorites are multigrain cheerios with sliced banana and raisin bran. Also, although I do drink regular old cow milk, I only really like soymilk on cereal. Either plain or vanilla, or even the unsweetened kind, but I just prefer the extra flavor the soymilk gives! Dangerously delicious!

Trader Joes' Triple Berry O's, Kashi Strawberry Fields, and Barbara's Cinnamon Puffins. All with soy milk only during breakfast time. No special bowl.

I used to really like Life when I was a kid, but it doesn't taste the same to me now as when I was a kid. I don't know if they've changed the formula or not.

I also really liked Cracklin' Oat Bran. I could eat it with milk or dry. Loved it!

I can't remember the last time I ate cold cereal recently though. We tend to be a hot breakfast household. The only cereal we might have at dinner is grits!

i go hand full fiber one, hand full special k berry, and a half full of frozen blueberries. the blueberries freeze some of the milk. A+ for breakfast.

I love Crispex with whole milk and a touch of sugar.

I hate Froot Loops, my sister loved it and it was always in the house and the smell alone could make me gag. Blech!

Granola in yogurt (with some fresh fruits). There are these two granolas flavors in the bulk bins at Whole Foods that are better than any granola I've ever had- the blueberry and the vanilla almond. Perfect amount of sweetness, chunkiness, and crunch.

My favorite right now is Kashi Go Lean with a banana and some cinnamon. I have a special cereal bowl I have to use every morning too. Usually I go year to year on cereals, in the past Cinnamon Life, Crispix, Wheaties, and Nature Valley Cereal have been favorites.

Kashi Go Lean with ice cold skim milk is my daily breakfast. When I want a treat, I have a bowl of Strawberry Fields...the flakes are much crunchier than Special K with Berries!

I go through phases. Currently, it's either Multigrain Cheerios, because they're not quite as sweet as Honey Nut, but sweeter than plain. I switch between that and the new Fiber One Caramel Delight. I LOVE this cereal. It's just like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but less cinnamon-y. And always ice cold skim milk. The worst thing for cereal is if the milk isn't cold enough.

I stupidly bought one of those single-size Cinnamon Toast Crunch bowls this morning --stupidly because it cost $2.50, and I could have bought half an entire box for that much. Fortunately they put enough cereal in there for about 3 bowls, so I just kept pouring and re-milking and pouring, and so on at work. Oh.. so much sugar though..mmm

GrapeNuts Trail Mix Crunch has definitely made its way onto my "fav" list. With a little really cold nonfat milk or yogurt if I'm feeling it, this makes a great breakfast lunch or even dinner.

Life, Kashi Heart to Heart, Cracklin' Oat Bran, Quaker Oatmeal Squares or Barbara's version of oatmeal squares.

Used to love Honey Bunches of Oats...and anything with clusters.

@cybercita: You granola sound wonderful.

I still crave granola. The white box-black letter kind that said "Generic Granola with raisins". I miss that stuff. It was perfect.
Now? I like variety. I really like Frosted Flakes (with Tony on the front). I dig cold chocolate cereals. Hot Coco Wheats. Oh to-die-for good.
I currently have Golden Crisp, Rice Krispies, Trader Joe's Organic Mango Passion Granola, and always Cheerios.
With Whole Milk. Preferably in a Tupperware bowl. The old kind. But since I have none of them, just my pottery bowl. Holds about 2 sinful cups. And always! drink the leftover milk.

@jdshd: i got the basic recipe from bittman {google bittman granola and you're good to go} and took it from there. i've made many batches since. i wish i'd thought to make it a couple of years ago when my friends' teenage daughter was visiting me for a couple of weeks. she could {and did} eat a seven dollar bag of granola in two days. it was a pleasure to cook for her, but i am in awe anyone who has teenagers at home. how do they afford to feed them???

as i was reading the comments here, i suddenly remembered {although i never eat them} that i have had a great, great love all my life for sugar frosted flakes. they're great!

I like all cereal but all time favorite has to be Captain Krunch Berry. If I have it around I have it for dessert just with milk (nonfat or 2%). The one that close behind would have to be Grapenuts I love that crunching sensation.

trader joes just the clusters mmmmmmmm

- Corn Pops (as a guilty pleasure)
- Trader Joe's Lowfat Granola (Almond & Vanilla) .. if this counts.

cheerios + skim milk - anything sweet = perfection. yumyum

An equal mix of Honey Bunches of Oats, Blueberry Morning, and Golden Grams with a sprinkle of Lucky Charms (usually just try and get the marshmallows) in a bowl I decorated at a pottery store that is red and black with skulls on it with ICE cold skim lactaid milk at night, preferable after midnight.

Cinnamon LIfe with ice cold skim milk!!! There's a new Maple Sugar Life that's not to bad either.

Special K with strawberries. Yum! When I buy something different, it's generally Rice Chex, Crispix, Cheerios, or Rice Krispies. Yes, I'm old-fashioned in the morning. I like a banana cut into my Rice K/Rice Ch, not so much in the others. All with cold milk (1% or the skim-that-pretends-to-be-1%), and I'll drink the milk that's left in the bowl.

Life. Hands down. Step-Dad says Cap'n Crunch.

1. granola with almonds and coconut
2. grapenuts soaked in chocolate milk

frosted flakes when it was still called frosties!! the best part is adding more frosties to the leftover milk!
Ohh..and cornflakes with bananas.
And Trix, but the fruit shaped kind, the milk turns kinda pink-ish after a while...artificial food coloring much?

Mmm...lots of interesting combinations...Grapenuts soaked in choc milk..I never think about using flavored milk :) Anyone use half & half?

What was your favorite cereal that has been discontinued?

I can't eat much cereal with the diabetes and all but I love homemade granola...mmmm
and I always know that I'll be happy with a bowl of cherrios with milk and a big glass of oj on the side....for some reason it just works perfectly for me

^ I know some of my friends mourn the passing of "Rice Krispie Treat cereal" although I never had it--it's available, but much less so than before. Do they still have Rice Krispies with marshmellows?

I am probably going to be cut out of the forum for saying this, but I don't like cold cereal very much anymore. As a kid, I loved the prizes, and to a lesser extent the taste--Frankenberry, Lucky Charms, and gradually my palate evolved to Golden Grahams. Freshman year in college and summer programs I'd eat Special K or Frosted Flakes if the dining hall fare was particularly rank. But cereal tends to make me bloated and tastes too 'same-y' and boring.

Cracklin' Oat Bran, Honey Nut Cheerios, Honey Bunches of Oats w/ Almonds, Raisin Nut Bran, homemade granola, Special K (and the Protein Plus, Cinnamon, and Pecan versions) ... mmmm I am a cereal addict!

Grape Nuts w/ whole milk and lots of sugar - all I ate in college
Barbara's Cinnamon Puffins - straight out of the box

What was your favorite cereal that has been discontinued?

I was going to put, aside from Life (above), a cereal I loved but is discontinued, at least in my area. I wish I remembered the name of it! I loved Mueslix growing up. There was a brand in the supermarkets 5-6 years ago that served several varieties of meusli with dreamy names of pretty locations in the US like Monterey. I don't recall which company made it, but it was packaged in a soft paper bag. My favorite had dates in it.

Dude, Barbra's Shredded Oat Squares. They're like the Quaker Oat Squares before Quaker went and added extra sugar and cinnamon and sh...stuff. Why did they have to mess with such a good thing? Now I go to the organic aisle. We don't always have those around the house though because I'll go through the box by myself an a couple of days. We keep Life, Special K red berries, and sometimes honey bunches of oats stocked.

Aaah do I have to pick just one? Fine...Cinnamon Toast Crunch!

But if I was able to pick runners up:
Kashi Go Lean Crunch
Clusters
Honey Nut Cheerios
Frosted Shredded Mini Wheats

Hillary
Chew on That

All-Bran Choco! This cereal can only be purchased in Belgium. Imagine spoonful sized shredded wheat. Now make the shredded wheat bittersweet chocolate - inside the shredded wheat - a nugget of dark chocolate. Perfect. Doesn't turn the milk brown so I feel good about eating it. And besides the fiber content helps.

Here at home - a bowl of All-Bran Buds mixed with the honey flavored Kashi Go Lean puffs.

Nature's Path has some awesome gluten-free cereals--my fave is the Kamut Krisp, thin crispy flakes that are also organic. My other go-to is Perky's Nutty Rice, the gluten-free version of Grapenuts.

Anyone ever had cracklin' oat bran? It is pretty much the best thing EVER.

I've been on an All-Bran topped with whole milk streak for a while now....and getting the signal that needs to change-up a bit.

I concur with the Cinammon Toast Crunch.
I used to stay in the corner of a cafe in the student center of my university pretty much at any time I wasn't in class.

They had a quirky uber-cheap snack counter that had things like fresh fruit, tea, cheesecake, sandwiches, as well as a never ending bowl of cereal for 2 dollars. You'd get a bowl that you could keep going up for refills any time you wanted.

CInammon Toast Crunch with ice cold 2% was my comfort food of choice when my brain was taxed and I really didn't want to go out of my way to look for healthier alternatives.

Sometimes you just need that indulgence.

Oatmeal Crisp (almond or raisin)
