Must Have From Trader Joes?

Hitting up Trader Joe's this weekend and want to go with a game plan, seems every time I go there is tons I want to try and then I get disoriented and just want to grab what I need a leave. What is always on your to buy list at Trader Joes?

48 Comments:

i live for trader joes... it used to be my primary supermarket. i think i have tried just about everything in their frozen appetizer section, and would recommend all of it. if i had to pick a single favorite one, i think it might be the mini mushroom turnovers

Fat-free Greek Style Yogurt
Fruit and Fiber Ends and Pieces (think that's what it's called....a bag of the leftover scraps from making their high-fiber fruit leather)
Vanilla ice cream bon bons
Flax & Honey flatbread
Ready-to-eat roast beets (in the veggie fridge)
Any number of their bagged salad
Cilantro dressing
Frozen naan
Shelf-stable Indian food entrees (tuna in yellow curry is great)
Antioxidant nut mix
Dried plantain chips
Greens with envy (I think that's what it's called...frozen mixed veggies)
Frozen fire-roasted corn
Almond cookies (two styles, one in a round clear plastic tub and the other in a rectangular cardboard box)

They've got pretty good prices on their brand of cashew/almond/anything-but-peanut butter. and I like their multi-grain and flaxseed tortilla chips. I'm also addicted to their greek yogurt, and their many varieties of pesto/hummus are good, too.

Oh, and whole wheat pizza dough! (Maybe I need to go to Trader Joe's...)

They have good prices on almond meal, if you use that often. I've also found decent cave-aged gruyere.

Forgot to mention, they have great prices on dried fruit. Go for the Granny Smith apples, Blenheim slab apricots, dried bananas, unsweetened dark cherries, and prunes. They also have dried mangosteen, though I don't know how their price compares, since that's the first time I've ever seen mangosteen in any store. Good prices on nuts, especially pistachios and cashews.

oh gosh -- i will try and be brief. i have an unhealthy obsession with trader joes.

-thai curry sauce (red or yellow, comes in a jar)
-garlic naan (frozen)
-tarte d'alsace (frozen)
-pizza dough
-truly handmade tortillas
-chicken sausage calzone (frozen)
-mediterranean hummus
-oatmeal chocolate chip cookies

and of course, all of their wines!!

Evoo, OO, sundried tomatoes in OO, organic chicken broth, eggs (the eggs are gorgeous and beautifully priced), goat cheese (great value on the large logs).

irish breakfast tea, sunflower seed butter, boysenberry preserves, dried blenheim apricots, walnuts, pine nuts, almonds and pecans, dish soap, liquid glycerin soap, plugras butter, blue diamond almond milk, goat's milk and goat's milk yogurt.

potstickers, coffee, cheese, some cryo marinated meats, naan, thai simmer sauces, oils,

oh i FORGOT to mention their lotions -- there is a citrus smelling one that i am addicted to. also make-up remover cloths with oatmeal.

i second the potstickers and cryo marinated meats -- the pollo asado and chipotle beef are delicious to just throw on the grill and into tacos.

Middle Eastern Flatbread
Mache (my new favorite!)
Kettle Corn
Crumbled Goat Cheese
Honey Greek Yogurt
Frozen Mandarin Chicken
Frozen Chipotle Ranch Fries
Frozen Eggplant cutlets
Cinnamon Almonds
Dried cranberries
Precooked Brown Rice
Very Mini Vanilla Meringues

.....and that's the stuff I buy regularly. The list is usually longer. For almost a year, 90% of my grocery shopping was at Trader Joe's.

Thanks for all of the awesome suggestions! Keep em' coming!

If you're fortunate enough to live in a state where TJ's can sell wine, you must check out this website/blog:

http://quaffability.com/

I've always done well by his recommendations, though the stores here in Virginia don't always carry the same selection as those in Cali.

The multigrain tortilla chips
salsas
this week blueberries were $6.29/ 2 lb container (i ate 2 of them since Sunday)

frozen nan!!!
microwave in the bag fingerling potatoes
nuts of all kinds
frozen rice that microwaves in 3 minutes (brown and jasmine)
olive oil, super cheap and decent quality
ditto for basalmic vinegar
Pretzel Chips
Peanut Butter filled pretzels
for a while there i was totally hooked on the frozen veggie samosas, but ate myself sick of them
aaaand, my mom swears by their frozen chicken breasts and the frozen three pepper mix

hmmmm.

steel cut oats
tea
coffee
nuts
dried fruit
plugra butter
greek yogurt
tangerine juice
raspberry lemonade
crushed garlic
hazelnut chocolate spread

margerhita pizza
fire roasted corn
baby string beans
gyoza
frozen steel cut oats disks
hansens root beer

@chelley
but they discontinued their chocolate hazlenut spread a couple years back? :( It made me sad.

I go to TJ's mostly for their staple stuff (plagued with the "I can make it myself!" state of mind most of the time when it comes to snacks)

Egg, Plain Yogurt, artisan bread, house chocolate bars, pasta, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, white/red vinegar, pita bread, mini bagels, cheese, herbs etc.

* psst....I'm so sad. There was an AWESOME deal on hazelnuts for a while at TJ's: $3.49 for a 1!lb!bag! that's cheaper than almonds! I bought about 4 bags.
But I went back recently and it somehow grew to a more believable 6.49... le sigh.

17 ounce chocolate bars
mini peanut butter cups
haricot verts
coffee
greek yogurt
ice tea (cold section)
almond flour
Olive oil
Hummus
fresh tortillas
salmon burgers
tilapia
turbinado sugar
cat cookies (for my dogs)
frozen fruit bars
banana waffles

OK, since no one else has mentioned these items:
The Trader Joe's Branded Cottage Cheese is the best. Reminds me of the home delivered cottage cheese from Green Spring Dairy in Baltimore from many years ago.

Trader Joe's Dijon Mustard is also really killer.

If they have them in stock, TJ's usually has the best price for Empire Kosher chickens.

TJ's Australian Lamb Loins.

They usually have the best price around for Kashi Go Lean Crunch. Yum.

And as noted, beer and wine and liquor prices can not be beat.

Pesto tortellini
Mushroom turnovers
Thai-style shrimp gyoza
Spiced apples (in a jar)
Pizza dough
Peanut butter cups
SPICY CIDER!
Olive baguette

I just got the sweet potato chips on an impulse buy. Looking forward to trying them!

@jazzinx: I live near Sacramento, CA and our TJ's still has chocolate hazelnut spread.

I'm hoping it hasn't been on the shelves for a couple years. eek.

yum....chocolate hazelnut spread on toasted naan.....

frozen pineapple
cottage cheese
handmade corn tortillas
braeburn apples (the best arrond)
string cheese and z-bars for the kiddos
and the baby spinach salad in a bag.....YUM!

oh yeah and the frozen rice is wonderful!!!

I "must have" a trip to Tader Joe's---the nearest is >100 miles away...I can see what I'm missin' out on!

I agree with the Empire Chicken, also their Baby Back Ribs are great and you don't need to trim them at all, just add a rub and grill/bake and add some sauce, good eats.

My best TJ's purchase ever would be their jarred Morello cherries, they make THE BEST sour cherry pie you'll ever taste!

Oh and their puff pastry is made with butter and pretty awesome too.

We are selling our children for TJ's orange champagne vinegar--they seem to be the only people who have anything like it--Whole Paycheck, Jewel, Dominix, etc can't seem to get their collective heads around the idea of vinegar--we are only able to find Balsamic this, Balsamic that---they'll have twenty varieties of balsamic, but nothing, really, outside of that.
Trader Joe's orange champagne vinegar is the dux!
We also like their middle eastern section.
Two buck Chuck is OK to cook with.

All butter puff pastry: It's just a tad more expensive than the Pepperidge Farms stuff but SO MUCH more delicious.

Frozen fruit: esp the sweet dark cherries and wild blueberries - great prices.

Cheese: good cheese selection at good prices

Ground beef: best prices on ground beef I've seen anywhere around here at least (DC area)

The most important thing I buy at TJ's is the completely nut free dark chocolate bars. Not sure what the brand is, but I usually can't eat chocolate since I am allergic to tree nuts and peanuts, and this stuff is GOOD. It's got a silver wrapper...look for it.
Also...
Cheese and green chile tamales
Coffee (watch out though, some of them have nut warning labels)
String cheese
Cheese and horseradish dip
Green tea yogurt
Those awesome guacamole kits
Diet Hansens ginger ale
Citrus shower stuff
Pizza dough
Fruit leather
Pita chips
Sesame pretzels

dried mango strips
mango sauce (like apple, only better)
salted pita chips

TJ's is the BEST for college eating...and not even over-budget with all the overpriced regular groceries in Boston

We usually walk out of there with one bag. The person checking is always amazed at how filled our one bag is from our one basket. :P It's probably because what we get there lays flat.

- My husband loves their pistachio nut meat (shelled, salted). He buys 5-6 bags at a time and eats them in a week. Yes, his farts make our cat cry.
- I always buy several bags of unsalted frozen edamame.
- Freeze dried mangosteens are good in cereal! I can get the canned ones elsewhere for cheaper pretty easily though...
- Their butter wafers are yummy. They disappear so quickly once opened...

Around the winter holiday (so not this shopping trip for you) I really love getting their candy cane Joe Joe's to give away, and keep one box for myself. :)

We used to buy their thin-sliced beef for sukiyaki there, but it went bad the same day we got home, so we're probably not going to buy any beef there again.

The one thing to absolutely avoid is their N-A-S-T-Y sushi, at least if you're in the Cleveland area. It's the worst looking and tasting sushi I've ever had.

canned solid white tuna.( just tuna & water no vegetable broth like supermarket brands if you check out the label)

oh man, i have been doing almost all of my grocery shopping at TJ's since college. Even now in NYC, where they are few and far between (although brooklyn is finally getting one! yay!) i still manage. they do lots of things well, the only stuff i've had truly bad luck with is produce (except in California, where it was more up to par) and hummus. funny to see that so many other people are addicted to their greek yogurt! i just discovered it, i was buying their no fat house brand, but just got into the greek. wow, i literally eat it every day for breakfast (with some TJ's dried cranberries and slivered almonds :) )

-almost any of the frozen pastas, especially eggplant and bowtie
-potato medley (frozen potatoes with veggies)
-olive oil
-CHEESE! they have yummy goat cheese
-everything pretzel slims...a staple of my lunch every day, much healthier alternative to chips!
-salsa
-naan
-strawberry lemonade/blood orange spritzer/peach juice - my fave juices
-their pizza dough is excellent
-chicken sausages
-get the truffle brownie mix IMMEDIATELY, but use it to make cookies instead. there are instructions on the box. throw some of their house mini peanut butter cups in the dough...oh my god. delicious to the extreme.

I worked in the Union Square area for a long time and was waiting for years for a TJ's to open in that vicinity. Wouldn't ya know, they did open -- but on the very day that our office re-located! Consequently, it's a little out of the way now so I haven't been going there. But after reading these blogs, I think I'll hop on the subway after work today and mozy on over there.

Check out traderjoefans products section for reviews.
My personal favorites:
- Truffle brownie mix .. substitute butter for applesauce, it tastes just as good
- Frozen chocolate croissants (I don't keep them in the house because I can't resist them)
- Frozen mini croissants
- BBQ flavor popped potato chips (same as PopChips except $.60 cheaper)
- Freeze dried mangos (it's like candy)
- chocolate covered sunflower seeds
- Big unsalted roasted cashews - my dad loves these, can't find them elsewhere
- King Arthur flour (cheaper then elsewhere)
- Butter Waffle cookies
- Grade B maple syrup
- Maine blueberry syrup
- TJ non fat greek yogurt (I eat it with maple syrup or blueberry syrup)
- Puff pastry - this stuff is GREAT
- Jaipur Vegetables

Where do they keep the Almond meal? Is it with the nuts or bake goods? I can never find it at my local TJ :(

- dijon mustard
- vinegars
- frozen artichokes (currently out of season, I'm afraid)
- frozen bell peppers
- the cheapest avocados anywhere
- shampoo/conditioner/lotion

Sesame & honey covered cashews.

My Trader Joe's favorites both come from the freezer section:

-Joe's Diner 4 Cheese Macaroni and Cheese
-Mochi Ice Cream

They're both absolutely necessary and delicious :)

Hillary
Chew on That

I need a Trader Joe's in my podunk burg (Lansing, MI)!

@gnomatic, the almond meal is with the baking items.

Trader Joe's supplies me with my daily dose of chocolate (Trader Joes Pound Plus Milk Chocolate), my Soyaki Marinade, Orange Flavored Dried Cranberries, Dried Sour Cherries, Madagascar Vanailla, Saffron, assorted nuts and sometimes their olive oil offerings.

I am about 7 hours from a TJ so I have never gone but i saw they have one in st louis so maybe I can pretend to like my b-i-l for the weekwed so i can check it out! :)

Pound plus dark and bittersweet chocolate
Coconut Milk
Vodka Sauce
Maple Syrup
Fruits and Nuts (so cheap!)
...and come christmas, those plastic boxes of candies, chocolates, and carmel corn make great care package stuffers!

Mango sorbet/Vanilla Soy Ice-Cream is crazy good!
Marinara Sauce - super cheap, fresh, and lower in sugar than other brands
Roasted Veggie Pizza - I dont each dairy so these alternatives are fantastic.

THREE BUCK CHUCK.

We don't have a Trader Joe's in this part of the country. I feel so deprived.

I love TJ's spinach dip with dill. It is so yummy with rye bread. I usually just buy that and frozen goodies, since I live a mile away from an amazing farmer's market that has better and cheaper produce and meats than TJ.

@amanda: what? :0 I've resorted to making it myself...I even called them and they were all "Oh, it's been discontinued because etc..."
now I'm all jealous.

Some more:

(Really nice and creamy) ricotta
SNAPEA CRISPS. dirt cheap Eggs.
Irish Butter

Oh - forgot to add that their brand stuff is a lot cheaper than other places. Probably helped by the fact that they do a lot of repackaging, but I'm not complaining.

I love the Snapea Crisps, they're great. So is the mochi. I also really like the bowls they have in the freezer section (some sort of asian shrimp bowl, and some indian thing). They are great to bring to work for lunch. Also they're frozen burritos are soooo delicious. I also really like the Fage Greek yogurt. It is even better is you throw in some of their delicious blueberries right now and a packet of splenda if you want it sweeter. I will add to the list if I think of anything else I love or dislike at TJ's.
