Penelope (though that may be a buck or two over your max) or Rice would be my suggestions.

I second Penelope! Or, if you can widen your area to include the flatiron area, Shake Shack!

Rice seems pretty popular but I don't recommend it. I haven't been to the Murray Hill location but Rice in Brooklyn is at best mediocre. Bland rice dishes, black beans that taste like they were just poured from a can, etc...

The Curry Hill area on Lexington is your best bet. I recommend Chennai Garden, which is a vegetarian South Indian restaurant with excellent food. I love their dosas but I believe they have a really cheap, $6.95 I think, lunch buffet (a good one, not the disasters that most Indian restaurants have) on weekdays.

Thanks for recomending Chennai Garden, devaleeana! I treated myself to the lunch special on Friday and it was amazing. Really fresh, great dosas, and just the right price!
