I finally found mangosteens!
I finally saw mangosteens in person for the first time in my life and had to pick them up. $8 for about 7 mangosteens seemed like a pretty good deal to me, considering I'd read quite a bit about them in the blogosphere. The first mangosteen was rotten, sadly, but the two after were pure heaven. I still have four remaining, which seemed a bit hard and underripe. So serious eaters, do any of you have a particular tropical fruit you love?

Well, I can say I am jealous! I have yet to see a fresh mangosteen and I am darn curious!
I am lacking in getting to try lots of the more interesting fruits out there (location and lack of travel--boo) and I really want to. I keep reading about tasty-sounding ones and wanting to try them!
I had my first tamarillo a few weeks ago, at the urging of an NZ buddy (yuck though....not for me) and have a list of others I want to try someday!
Glad you thought they were yummy! I love testimonials!

I like durians but I've only had imported ones. From what I read, people either really, really like the fresh ones in Southeast Asia or shun them completely (which includes avoiding those who are eating or carrying one).
Had a fruit in Peru many years ago I haven't been able to track down. It has a skin like an eggshell. Crack it open and inside is a sweet gelatious mass which is used in a Pisco based drink.

I don't know what a mangosteen is but since part of the word is "mango" I'm sure it's something I'd love to try. I absolutely love mangoes (especially the little yellow champagne variety--they're less fibrous and have a small pit) to the point where I dream about them sometimes. Okay, I'm pregnant, not just a weirdo.
Durian is really good too--on the outside it smells like rotting garlic but when you open it up there's sweet, creamy custardy goodness inside! You need a chisel and a hammer to open one without injuring yourself though.
When in Hawaii I had breadfruit and was unimpressed. Apparently it is better as a drink. The pineapple was unbelievable, though. I hadn't realized until then that it's supposed to be more orange than yellow when it's really and truly ripe.

i'd love to try mangosteens!
when i was in jamaica, i loved the amazing bananas there. and i ate lots of soursop. i'm also a big sucker for passionfruit and will buy it when i see it, no matter how ridiculous the price.

When in the states, I love mangos...ever since I lived in FL and picked them off the tree, they're something I can't live without...
When in Costa Rica it's fresh passion fruit...I could eat 100 of those

I've only had freeze-dried mangosteens, thanks to Trader Joe's -- but with all the fresh mangosteen love going around the community, I'm really interested in trying them. Mind, I realize we're probably in entirely different locales, but: Where did you find them? China town run / local grocer's / farmer's market / what have you?

The place is called Oceans Fresh Food Market in Brampton, Ontario. They do not have a website, but are Asian themed, including South, Southeast, and China. An amazing place to shop and just get lost in because of the variety of produce, fish and meat.
They also had sugar apples, custard apples, rambutans, passionfruit, sapodillas, and soursop there, as well as at least 6 varieties of bok choy.

@browntown: Thanks, that cleared that up! Darn, though. I'm not a Canadian, and I'm on the wrong coast for a road trip. I'll keep hunting -- and thanks for sharing. :)
