Grill It with Bobby Flay

Has anyone seen this show yet? Any comments?

It's kind of a strange concept. He has guest on, but they don't cook together, but they're not competing either.

Sounds a lot like one of Martha's non-cook guests trying to participate in the kitchen with her. The segments rarely fly because there's nothing interesting about a non-cook holding a wooden spoon while pimping his or her latest movie.

Next...

I saw it this weekend. When it was over, I was very confused.

Maybe this is one where they need to tweak it a bit. I like the idea that they're bringing on unknown people...this could reveal some hidden gems that might have a chance at a show. But it's just sort of an odd concept as it is. They have a main ingredient in common, but they each do their own thing with it. They chat a bit back and forth, but don't cook together, and then at the end they have a lot of food.

It would make more sense if they were cooking together, or even if they were creating the same meal but working on different parts of it. The guest could do his/her signature dish and Flay could fill in the gaps with sides, salads, drinks, desserts -- whatever is missing from the lineup. And then they could interact more. As it is, I keep wondering what the point is. There's no contest going on, so there's no reason they can't be working together.

The show has been on I tried out for it but never got any form of response. All the people that have "lived out their culinay fantasy" so far I havent seen on the web page with all the contestants. So I dont really know.

I'm on the fence with this one. I agree with db that, if tweaked, it could be successful. I have just one other comment that I'll probably get flack over, but here goes. With the exodis of Emeril, I can't tune in FN without seeing Bobby Flay. Don't get me wrong; I like Flay. But I fear he is becoming oversaturated. He seems to be FN's expert on EVERYTHING. Hopefully, they'll find other personable and qualified chefs to share the load.

@Josdean, you may be right, but Flay is my guilty pleasure. I kinda like watching him. And I'd much rather see more of him than Guy Fieri. Or the Neeleys.

This new show though....it seems like it was built by a committee that compromised too much. The focus is pretty blurry. There doesn't seem to be a point to it. It's not about Flay's cooking, it's not about the guest, it's not about the cuisine, it's not about the ingredient, it's not about a competition between cooks....it's just there.

I hope they can come up with some new talent that is worth watching, so we don't get tired of the ones we like now. Actually, I'd be happy to watch some of the original FN shows in reruns, since I didn't have cable back in those days. They'd be all new to me and I'll bet that there are plenty of people who would enjoy seeing the old shows for a second time.

@db - It would be a hoot to dig up Bobby Flay's first series where he and his cooking-impaired friends make dinner in a living room-style setting. Then follow it up with a current Bobby Flay show (not Grill It). Then and now. It would be a great way to observe his metamorphosis from rookie to pro!

@josdean, I'd love to see any of the early FN shows. I didn't have cable back in those days. And I'll bet people who did see them would love to see them again. Considering how many reruns of other stuff they do, I wish they'd just pull the old stuff out of whatever vault they have it in, and dust it off and use it.
