Emergency Food Storage

We've been trying to build up a storage of food for emergency purposes. Providentliving.org (click on family home storage) is from a church site, but is an excellent resource for emergency preparedness. What sort of foods would you store to add a bit of delicious to the basics of grains and rice?

believe it or not I used to make dried beef. not jerky really, because I didnt brine it in any way, just very thinnly sliced eye of the round and dried in the dehydrator, that along with lots of different dried veggies used to always be on hand. If nothing happened to make me use them every year, I would take it all camping and make a wonderful, easy and light to carry beef stew. I have no ideaif the meat can be kept for more than a year, because of the lack of salt, but it was never hard to use it up that quickly either.

MREs have a long shelf life....go to www.longlifefoods.com...and they're not bad either

I live in the Bay Area where they stress having an"emergency" stash. I keep "emergency" tinned food as well as water, instant coffee and tea bags. Also a little stove thing and sleeping bags. It's all in 2 knapsacks with shoulder straps. I also keep a well-stocked pantry because I like having things on hand when I want/need them

DATE the items and refresh your stash every few months at least once a year.

MRE's would be good. I've neve seen them for sale.

I use this site - it's also a church site and it's great because it helps you get your food storage in order, but it tells you what to do step by step, just a little bit at a time, which is especially helpful on a budget.

I hadn't thought of dried beef and MREs. Great tips. Thanks so much, and thank you especially to hmswo. That site has excellent information.

It depends of what the likely emergency is(i.e. Gulf Coast--hurricane, West Coast--earthquake, Midwest--flood), and how long you expect to have to survive unaided. The pre-Katrina emergency stash was a recommended 3 days. The post-Katrina is 7+.
