Costa Rica eats!

Heading to CR in August. I expect gallo pinto, which is great! Anybody take a tour of the cheese factory? And, has anyone had vino coyol or guaro, which I understand are homemade varieties of hooch. Any dish that is not to be missed? Thanks!

I miss Linzano salsa with a vengeance, a condiment served at almost every restaurant. Linzano is like CR ketchup, but it's mildly spicy and full of flavor. Great on eggs. And sandwiches. And on empanadas.

Stop in a rural town bodega and buy a chocolate covered frozen banana.

we were in costa rica in december and omg the gallo pinto we had was amazing. also coffee everywhere was so good because it was so fresh.

i became addicted to whole fried fish for dinner - so simple yet so tasty! french fries there are pretty much terrible though, but you don't really need them. and a lot of places (especially in jaco, where there are a lot of tourists) have italian dishes (i guess there's a fairly large italian tourist industry there) but those aren't really that good - stick with the local stuff and the fresh seafood. and their version of american-mexican food (burritos, enchiladas)....i wouldn't bother.

we stayed a little outside of jaco and there was this amazing smoothie/milkshake place down the beach from us - just the freshest fruits and the perfect thing on a hot day.

If you are in San Jose, then you must make a trip to neighboring Escazu to a fabulous chicken place called Pollo Male...delicious cheap local rotisserie chicken, refried beans and tortillas to die for.

Cerutti is expensive, but worth it...one of the top restaurants in Costa Rica

Also, you should go to La Monastaire...very touristy, but the view and location are worth it...the steak is amazing and the caesar salad is phenomenal.

For the most part, everything in Costa Rica is delicious...Offhand I can't think of one bad meal I've had there in the 10+ times I've been

@tchaike - i fell in love with linzano as well on my trip to CR...but now i just get it at my grocery store to get my fix.

in addition- buba's fish tacos in jaco is a neat little hole in the wall shop with awesome tacos. also villa coletta (sp) in jaco has an awesome sunset view.

I lived in the central valley for a while with a dairy farmer. Best days of my life. Oh the food I used to eat.... fresh homemade tortillas with gallo pinto, lizano, and the regional speciality white cheese. Zarcero is especially known for its fresh dairy products so if you're in the area (it's near Naranjo and San Ramon) please check it out. Oh and oxtail soup is another Costa Rican specialty which is fantastic.

I lived there for 6 months in '95. Loved the food...gallo pinto with strong coffee and fresh papaya and mango for breakfast every day...more fruit and fresh, spongy white bread from the panaderia for lunch, and usually fried fish or arroz con pollo for dinner...I was never much of a rice fan, but living there made me a convert.
And I drank my fair share (and probably three other people's as well) of guaro, as well as the local beer, Imperial. The beer tasted similar to a Dos Equis or something of that ilk, and the guaro was like a rum...yummy in drinks with tropical fruit flavors, although we did drink it in shots. Sweetish, but also kind of astringent.
Have so much fun! Pura Vida!
