Can't sleep... what do you consume?

Seems like have read lots of "advice" for hungry insomniacs...warm milk, carbs, hot tea, glass of wine or no caffeine after 12:00 noon. Ahh...what works for you when you can't sleep & your tummy is growling? Hot chocolate is my first choice :)

i actually try really hard not to eat for at least two hours before bed, so im not a sleepy eater

Oreos and milk!!!

Chamomile Tea. If that doesn't work, Ambien.

miller lite and oreos ;)

valium and wine.

A bowl of cereal (usually Crispix or Rice Chex), Kozy Shack rice pudding (or tapioca, but that's new) and sometimes a granola bar.

chamomile and linden teas together, mixed with honey and lots of late night TV...

warm milk or tea

warm milk or tea

If I can't sleep and I actually get all the way to the kitchen, I'll have a glass of milk of some sort. I can't think of a time where I ever got out of bed and then ate something.

Sleepytime Extra by Celestial Seasoning
It's a blend of chamomile and valerian (sp?). After a warm bath or shower, I'll wrap myself in my softest robe, and have a warm cup of tea with honey...usually makes me pleasantly drowsy or at the very least relaxes me to the point of wanting to go to bed.
I haven't done this during the summer though.

disclaimer: I know that valerian is sold in natural food stores as an herbal sleep aid, but don't know how it may react you.

shot of limoncello. I guarantee your going to sleep. Also good for head colds, cramps, headaches and the occasional asshattery of people who make you nuts.

Warm milk with honey. Though, if you're prone to heartburn, no warm milk before bed.

Ambien. Followed by honey nut cheerios.

You can have my Ambien when you pry it from my cold, dead hands, by the way.

A tablespoon of peanut or other nut butter. High in fat to satiate my hunger, but not overly filling to disturb my sleep.

warm milk and honey works for me

Excedrin P.M. and Stoli.

halcion and a glass of wine. out like a light!

A tumbler of wine.

Nothing. Late night eating the surest route to weight gain. Okay, in hot weather the occasional Pop*Ice (15 calories each).

Actually, I haven't found anything that works for me. Way too often I find myself wide awake at 3-4 am (including last night) - still awake, not already awake - I guess if I knew what works for me, it wouldn't keep happening:-). I've tried wine, tea, milk (not all at once:-)) - nope, nothing works.

To soothe my achy stomach (and it is usually achy at that hour), I may take a spoonful of sour cream. If I have a fresh roll or bagel, I may have that (no, I don't gain weight, whether I eat at night or not, but maybe I'm lucky).

Bourbon and ice cream!

yogurt or granola. not for any other reason than they're always in supply and there's very little to clean up.

an egg on toast or a popcicle. I prefer no cleanup but sometimes an egg on toast is all i crave and i can't sleep until i get it. I sometimes crave crepes late but then i am a super weird eater.

www.organicandnaturalmom.blogspot.com - I got a new Look!!

I find it really calming to heat-up some unsweetened natural soy milk with a bit of vanilla bean...and it tastes good!

@brooke29...I have the same issue, simply because I am a night person and never, ever had a bedtime as a kid. However, I have a job with ordinary hours, so I had to figure something out.

My no-fail sleep prescription is OTC Hyland's Calms Forte (non habit forming) and a cup of Yogi Bedtime/Calm tea, no sugar needed as it's naturally sweet. I can clock it that I will be asleep within a half hour of this dynamic combo.

As for late night eating leading to weight gain, there's no such thing. Our bodies are calories in, calories out. I think the no-late-night-eating advice is popular simply because people tend to eat poorly later at night, opting for sweets, heavy carbs, and things that generally don't take too much preparation. I'm not suggesting a salad at bed (gross!) but a little bite of something to make you feel content is perfectly fine.

Scotch. If I ate anything my body wouldn't get around to digesting it until morning anyway.

@savecara - Yep, I'm a night person too, and since I work from home, I often end up working at night since I'm awake anyway. But you make me think that there's hope for me yet, I just may give your remedy a try!

Ambien and a bagel...or popcorn....or Ben & Jerry's......

Yea, probably something more like Nyquil. But the hot cocoa sounds good! :)

toast with peanut butter, and a glass of cold milk

Last night at 3am it was those rough, crisp Ryvta crackers, with butter and horseradish. Obviously, my cupboard was almost bare, but the snack was so good, I'd actually serve it to people in the furture (fancied up a bit). I also drank some cherry seltzer.

@JEP Definitely hot chocolate for me too! There's something about it that is so soothing and after half a cup, I'm out for the night. :)

Mine might be a bit weird, but it is the perfect thing to quench my hunger, it's healthy and it will fight off night time catabolism. 1/2c. cottage cheese mixed with 1-2T. natural peanut butter and 1 serving of instant sugar-free jell-o pudding (chocolate or butterscotch). I mix it well and it tastes like a dessert. Add a bit of frozen melted fruit or cool whip if you like.

Beer. Not only does it make you sleepy but it also makes your tummy feel full as well. For the non drinkers out there Chamomile or any Sleepy Time Tea you like. Now if you just got done watching a Ray episode a valium.

Any type of cheese, with crackers if I have them, and maybe a little dish of pickles or hot peppers. But the important part is the cheese.
