canning supplies available in NYC?
I was wondering if anyone knows of a place to get canning and preserving supplies in NYC in bulk. Basically the CSA that I belong to is interested in running a demo for the members. Even though buying in bulk lowers the price, buying online almost doubles the price of the jars b/c they're glass! So if I could find a place that's local (and could even possibly deliver locally, to brooklyn) I think it would save us a bundle in shipping charges.

i've seen ball jars at fishs eddy and zabar's, but even most grocery stores in NYC carry cases of jars and pectin in the summer. try gristede's or food emporium.

i actually just looked into this and found a thread about jam jars on chowhound. was thinking of stopping in there tomorrow. so the person didn't provide a name but it's apparently a cooking supply store on 17th betwen 5th ave & union sq. also, i think the panhandler sells them.

ignore my post...just took a quick jaunt down there and that place is non existant. i think i'll give fish's eddy a shot next as that's closest to my apt. what're you going to can?

Go here. I did a search on distributors in NY and got the list linked
OMG...Did you realize Ball is no longer selling home canning products? (Home canning division was spun off.) I'm CRUSHED!! I have been canning since I was a teenager and the jars were always available directly through Ball. ((Sniff...)) An era ends.
I used to buy my canning supplies at hardware stores before the advent of "one stop shopping." I recently picked up a replacement Canning Utensil Set at Target because mine is in storage. They had a nice selection of jars as well.

they sell some canning jars at a small store on ludlow st in the lower east side... between rivington and delancey on the east side of the street. i dont even know the actual name of the store but it's a chinese dollar-type store with a sign that says "99 cents more or less" I got a giant 2-litre mason jar there that I'm pretty proud of.
I'm not sure if they'd sell you whole cases, but I don't see why not.
also what about other restaurant supply type stores in Chinatown and thereabouts?

Actually, the store on 17th st. DOES exist- it's on the north side of the street close to Tisserie under a scaffold. It's hard to spot, but it's a somewhat dingy restaurant supply place that has almost everything. Another good bet for canning supplies would be Home Depot or Zabar's upstairs. Too bad about Ball- I agree on that one.

Brooklyn Kitchen off the Lorimer L stop in Brooklyn! They were inspired to open their kitchen goods shop in the first place because it was so hard to find canning materials in New York City, so they have plenty of stuff you need.

While Ball no longer sells canning supplies, www.freshpreserving.com does distribute Ball jars from the company's new owner. I've been using them all summer and they are exactly the same product, though the website does offer some jars in other shapes as well.

I just went to the kitchen store on 17th between Union SQ & 5th avenue and they don't have canning jars. Fishes Eddy's on Broadway & 19th has a good selection.
Does anyone know where I can get Mustard Seed in Manhattan below 14th street?

There are Ball glass jars at Broadway Panhandler! I just bought some, $1.50 for the pint-sized, I believe. They're in the front, by the windows, just turn left when you enter.

Anyone know where I can find pectin? I've been to 3 supermarkets that do not have it and my peaches are starting to go bad :-(
THANKS!
