Breaking out the deep fryer...

So my boyfriend and I love to take over the kitchen at his parents house on weekends. We decided that we want to mix things up this weekend and break out the deep fryer and have fun. We definitely want to try AB's deep fried pickles, and repeat the deep fried oreos we had down the shore. An attempt at s'mores is also on the short list.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to make, or about using the fryer itself?

Oh wow, that sounds like some fun indulgence right there! How about some corn dogs...or deep fried ice cream?!

Just be wary of the order you fry different foods because they will impart some flavor into the oil. I have never done pickles but I would think deep frying pickles, then Oreos wouldn't be the best idea because some of the pickle flavor would be there, same goes for frying fish.

You might want/have to change out the oil before doing the dessert foods.

I love Pioneer Woman's Onion Straws: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2008/03/onion-strings-oh-yeah-baby/

Don't know if anyone has had Cheesecake Xango, it's fried cheesecake and I've been thinking about attempting something along those lines.

Enjoy!

@bobcatsteph3: I have had Xango, at a little fusion restaurant, and it is so good. So decadent. Let us know how it turns out if you do try!

Deep fryer heaven??? Try some:

Tostones
Falafels
Fried Cauliflower
Onion or Leek Rings
Fried Plantain Chips - take green plantains, slice them as thin as you can (a mandoline helps) and fry in small batches so they do not stick together. Sprinkle them with garlic salt. Yummy!!

Good idea on the falafels Madelyn!

I have done pickles before and they are wonderful.

Mmm... the obvious - fried mac & cheese!

Wings? Spring rolls? Fried wontons?

Have a Tempura feast!

Batter and fry all sorts of veggies: zucchini, thin sliced sweet potatoes (if you can find a purple one, it's pretty cool, mixed in with the regular ones), mushrooms, onions, broccoli, japanese eggplant, cauliflower, asparagus, green beans.

I love deep fried lobster tails. So over the top.

Serve an array of dipping sauces...hot mustard, sweet chili, soy (doctored up with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice, touch of sesame oil, fine ground chili flakes, chopped chives, pinch of sugar), mayo based.

Serve something light alongside, salad with a citrusy dressing.

Around our place, if I get home and the fryer is waiting it means someone is ready for a hand-breaded pork tenderloin. Add some great french-fried sweet potato wedges, or maybe a basket of beer battered sweet onion rings.....oh yeah, and a nice cold beer.....not fried.

squash blossoms stuffed with bacon.

Are you using a FryDaddy?

battered Twinkies !!!

@ladymarmalade: i have no idea what kind of fryer it is, does it make a difference?

You could fry a Buick and it would taste good.

My favorite, though, is deep fried okra.

Fried okra!

cheeseburgers
pizza
hot dog in a bun

One of the best things I've ever had was breaded deep fried lasagna at a cocktail party. The platter was emptied in about two minutes.
