Are We Eating Tomatoes Now?
When BK put a couple of slices on my Whopper last week, I took 'em off (although I wanted them. Wanted them bad.)
When I found them chopped into a prepared salad at Whole Foods, I said, "Perhaps this isn't just a silly mistake?"
And yesterday, when slices of tomato were placed upon my bagel-lox-and-cream-cheese at Russ & Daughters, I gave in and said, "Oh, if you think it's okay..."
So what goes on?

Some of us never stopped.
And now they say it might not have been tomatoes that caused all the salmonella - maybe cilantro, parsley or jalapeno peppers.
Tell that to the tomato industry. Sheesh.

Me neither. I couldn't stand seeing this trademark of summer rotting away at my local grocery, knowing that farmers everywhere were taking a huge hit financially.

They did a pretty quick job of narrowing down which ones weren't affected, and although there wasn't an abundance at the grocery, every time I looked, they had at least some.
And the farmer's market had local greenhouse-grown ones as well, which at this time of year are about the best you'll find, anyway. Until the home grown ones arrive. I still say those are the ultimate best.

I stopped in certain situations. At the very beginning of the scare. But after the word had proliferated enough, I figured the places I was going (the reputable ones, anyway) had adjusted and were using the "safe" tomatoes. Just had some this weekend and haven't gotten sick. (Fingers crossed.) Now I'll have to avoid that jalpeño-cheddar melt at Wendy's.

When the scare started, I already had purchased tomatoes and we had eaten some, so I figured those were safe enough. Not dead yet. And then all the suspect ones were pulled from stores, so what was left was allegedly safe.
I can't go through life worrying about stuff like this. I'm fit and healthy, but I'm gonna die of something, sooner or later. Could be a bus accident, could be an asteroid falling on my head, could be a bad lettuce leaf. Worrying overmuch about it isn't going to help anything.
On the other hand, I got a couple good laughs out of the situation. Now and then, I'd ask someone if they knew Sam and Ella and of course they'd look puzzled and say, "Sam and Ella?" trying to figure out who I was referring to, and I'd say, "Yeah, SamAndElla, the ones who won't let us eat tomatoes."
Feel free to steal the joke next time there's an outbreak.

Question: how the Sam Hell can tomatoes whole tomatoes can become tainted inside.....talk about the blind leading the blind...I saw the way the FDA explained on the News and called serious bullsh!t

I'm with team "Never Stopped."
I'm powerless when it comes to summertime tomatoes.
Kerosena at 2:25PM on 07/07/08
It's been going on for so long now that I can eat them right from garden now!
The USDA needs some serious house cleaning. Most of their guidelines are a joke anyway. If they are there to "protect" us, they aren't very good at it, just think of the amount of recalls recently!
jonfoxx at 10:26PM on 07/07/08
Two cents and then some: The USDA now thinks that it wasn't tomatoes at all but peppers or onions or...

Cooking in a restaurant I noticed lunch tickets coming thru minus the tomatoes on burgers, and some wraps, even though the servers are told our tomatoes are local greenhouse grown. We are even lucky enough to get hydroponic local tomatoes. So no dirt involved!!!!

What scare? Kidding. Never stopped.

I stopped for a bit but now I'm back in full swing. Tomatoes are too delicious!
