a source for loquats?
It may be too late in the season now, but has anyone seen loquats for sale in or near San Francisco? I haven't had one in ages but am suddenly, inexplicably, craving one .

Goodness, I didn't even know they could be kept long enough to sell. There's a loquat tree on my grandparent's property in Santa Barbara, but we could barely get them into the house in decent enough shape to eat. We mostly just ate them right off the tree. I wish I could help you with a source, though, as I understand the cravings.

I think it was the post about peaches that caused the craving- I love how a loquat has plenty of tang, like an intensified yellow peach. You're right, they are very fragile and prone to bruising, but I have seen them for sale at the Santa Cruz farmer's market in the past. I really miss the ones my mom's friend used to grow. I might have to go to Chinatown and see if I can find them.

My best advice on loquats is that when you see a tree full of ripe loquats that you stop and ask the homeowner if you may pick some. Most people will say yes as they are rarely put to good use. My mother loves them dearly and has a tree, but nobody can eat them all. Still, some of my great summer memories are standing under the tree and eating loquats until I nearly popped.

Ravara I have two huge loquat trees in my back yard. Here in Texas, they are way past the fruiting stage for the season. All we have left by the end of July is frozen pulp (for sangria) and jam/jelly.
Unless they are on a different timetable on the West Coast I am sorry to say I think you'll have to settle for peaches or cherries for now and wait for next year's crop.
