Unidentified Lettuce?

Hey all!

So I bought this lettuce at the grocery store yesterday because it looked interesting. Then I promptly forgot what it was called, and therefore can't find a recipe for it. I could fake it, but I'd rather know what it is and do something interesting.

It's a beautiful lettuce - it's a tight round head with large, crinkled leaves, a dark green color. It's too chewy raw, but it has a slightly bitter, deep taste. It tastes green.

I'll try uploading a photo:

If you know what my lettuce is, and have any delicious ideas for it, I'm open to those suggestions too!
Thanks,
Alyssa

You have some cabbage.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's Savoy Cabbage. Don't have experience with it, tho. Let us know.

Solved, by my mom! It's a savoy cabbage. I think I might make a cabbage stir fry (from the Essential Vegetarian Cookbook) with it.

Hi Alyssa,

You might try looking on Cook's Thesaurus. They have both pictures and descriptions. You might see your lettuce there or see and recognize the name. There are 3 categories that you might find it in:

Cooking Greens
Cabbages
Salad Greens

Good luck!

I don't think that is Savoy cabbage, but a plain ole cabbage that hasn't been picked clean so that only the tight leaves are left.

I like to cook savoy cabbage very simply: melt some butter in a pot, add chopped cabbage, cover, and cook, stirring occasionally until done. Add salt and pepper to taste.

A far more complicated treatment of savoy cabbage can be found in The Greens Cookbook. It's a combination of buckwheat noodles, brown butter, the cabbage, and soft cheese.
