Tyler Florence Ultimate Potato Salad
Tyler Florence's Ultimate Potato Salad
In my opinion, this is pretty good stuff, although a little heavier than I like. But for once, he didn't destroy a perfectly good tasting food by smothering it in cheese. That guy can destroy more food with cheese or heavy sauce than anyone I've ever seen. My main reason for not eating at Applebee's. Their food sucks.

I have to say that I love the Applebees Grilled Chicken Oriental Salad, but we don't go any more due to the incredibly slow service, apparently nationwide.

I ate at Applebee's ~10 years ago and was stupid enough to order their teriyaki chicken. Not sure what kind of crack I was on to expect it to be remotely close to authentic, like my mother's. It was salty and garlicky. UGH! I thought to myself, I'll never go back.
Fast forward 10 years. I went to Applebee's recently since one opened up near where I live. I told my husband to kick me in the face if I try to order anything remotely Asian.
The little kids running around me got to me early on. I hate those infestations, especially screaming ones.
I ordered one of those trios so I didn't have to commit to one dish. Since I don't care for most deep fried food, poultry, and most barbecue sauces, of course I tried the mini chicken ranchers (deep fried chicken sandwiches) and boneless buffalo wings. I also ordered the mini bacon (cheese)burgers without cheese. I will never understand WTF the fascination is with stupid bite-sized sandwiches. I ate one bite of each - they all sucked. Dry, bland, and salty. I drank 3 glasses of iced tea; the best part of my meal. My husband salvaged the bacon from my platter, and left it a wasteland of picked over chicken, bread, beef patties, and vegetables.
Yeah, I don't plan on going back EVER.

So in other words, you don't like barbecued fried food...so you ordered barbecued fried food, and then wonder why you didn't like it?
I'm not defending Applebee's by any stretch, but that's just idiotic.

I adore my duahgter but she has the perfect palate for fast-food restaurants--she loves salty, hates spicy, and delights in bland.
We went to Red Robin last weekend. If I had taken her to The French Laundry she would not have been more delighted.
So that's why I spend a lot of time in these restos. I generally get the house speciality, figuring that that's what they do best. Can't imagine what that would be at Applebee's. Or TGIF for that matter. (At Red Lobster I always like the Caesar Salad with shrimp and lobster.)
No use blaming me for daughter's tastes; she was brought up to be an adventurous, vegetable-centric eater, with the result that she is devoted to overcooked spaghetti, watery tomato sauce and loads of tasteless melted cheese. Accompanied by a salad dripping in Bleu cheese dressing.
Sigh.

Speaking of chain restaurants, I love the commercials for the Olive Garden talking up their "chef's school in Tuscany". I have a hard time imagining that the work release folks that are in the kitchens of most Olive Gardens are allowed to travel that far.

@worldcupfever - ROFLMAO

roscoed, you're totally right about the resturaunt.
Applebees really licks the chicken balls. I've never had a DECENT meal there. I've had a white 'rare' steak there (yes, it was white) and a very sad oriental salad. Therefore, they will never take another cent from me!

@clemon - it's called sarcasm. :P

@worldcupfever- Microsoft Streets & Trips says there's a Tuscany, AK. I wonder if you're on to something...

@cowprintrabbit - Now it all makes sense.

I travel a lot on business and mostly to small towns. It is pathetic how the chains have driven most of the hometown restaurants out of business. I was recently in a small West Virginia city that shall remain nameless. Less than a five minute drive away from my Courtyard by Marriott (and every chain restaurant known to humankind that surrounded it) was a Vietnamese restaurant run by the nicest family. The 20 something son was almost speechless when I ordered pho...pronounced it correctly and then asked if they made the traditional French-style Vietnamese sandwiches. They didn't but he brought me a couple of wonderful dishes. I tipped as much as my expense account would let me and thanked the restaurant deities that I didn't have to eat Applebees, TGIFridays or an Outback. 7 pm on a Saturday night and there were 4 other people in the restaurant...I hope they tell their friends!

I've always had a respect for Tyler - And I will try the recipe "as is". and taste the results.
What's great about cooking is that I can always adjust for myself or friends and family. Like an Artiste - Play, Have fun and Cook!
