The Next Food Network Star - are we watching?

Where's the love? (If any). I'm blogging the eps on my site, http://www.annienewman.typepad.com, but did anyone here want to give an opinion? Or are we "so over" this?

71 Comments:

I watched an episode of this last night sort of unintentionally...I guess I've never watched it before, but judging from this episode, this show is terrible! Top Chef is way better.

Hillary
Chew on That

I watched it last night to see if Lisa would get booted off first. Awful show!!

Not watching.

I was so annoyed that they didn't even really tell the one who was kicked off (Corey?) why she was kicked off. They took Corey's own words and said she was so "dark". Is "dark" a new name for tongue-tied? For deer-in-headlights? Don't those two FN execs fall in the same category?

About Lisa, I thought the last of those died out in 50's boarding schools.

It can't compete with Top Chef for me!

@Blue Iris - lmao here.

It's not as good as Top Chef, by any means. But, I don't know if the two shows can be compared...Two different outcomes in my eyes.

I am going to watch it a couple more times (like 2) to see if I can get into it more. It may just have to get into the groove?? I don't know-I didn't watch the first one. I will say this: the girl with the short black hair (forget her name) is stuck on herself. She needs to be taken down a peg or two.

@Butrflygirly - That's Lisa. I really wanted her to get booted off last night. She really needs a reality check!

I just can't get into that show. A couple of seasons ago, with FN's failure to check the credentials of the contestants (remember JAG, the "Iraq war hero"--his lie wasn't found out by FN, but was published by a Marine Corps news paper, and was forwarded to FN), FN simply confirmed my sentiment that they're trying to fill a formula, not bring us informative, practical food TV.

You're hooked, @izatryt. Admit!

What Lisa needs is a body check, like they do it in hockey. See, I've started hating her now, to avoid the rush later on.

@annien - I hated her when I saw the promos for the show! I admit it.....I am hooked on seeing her blown out! I was screaming at the TV last night. I was screaming at the judges for not giving her a well deserved out the door. OMG, I can't believe my own words.

I didn't see the show last night - is Corey the comedian from Last Comic Standing a couple seasons back? Corey Kahaney? It looked sort of like her in the commercials, but I wasn't sure.

@BangieB: Yes, she's the comedian. At one point she said she did "kind of dark" comedy or words to that effect. Apparently that struck a note with the judges, but I wondered if they knew what she meant.
She did not do any comedy of any kind in her presentations to the FN folks, but was very much at a loss for words and troubled-looking when she had to speak. Seemed to be pleasant enough during the cooking challenge but put MUCH honey on her salmon. Left gracefully.

Why wasn't last year's Food Network Star among the Food Network "stars" judging last night? Maybe because the network really didn't promote last year's winner's show, and it died a swift death? I feel a little bad that I can't even remember last year's winner's name! If the network didn't work with it's newest "star" to develop a good show ( which would only be in their own best interest) then why bother with the whole competition? The Neeleys? Where the heck did they come from?
Sorry ... I kind of went off on a little tangent there ...
Yes, Lisa has to get knocked down several pegs, and so does Nipa! I'll give it a couple of more episodes before I bail.

Why are they doing this?? I watched with gritted teeth and why even have them cook, they're looking for sombody with T.V. appeal, and they're were limited people to really judge this and a few people shouldn't have even been there, if I made a jello cake on a show........maybe if they went semi-homemade they could've got their meals done in 30min..and why didn't the contestant dance around the kitchen and make cute remarks??? isn't that what food network its looking for??? and why do the judges glare at the contestants?? kinda like why are you wasting my time...so why are they??

Amy Findlay won last year and her show bombed 3 minutes after it started. I agree about Nipa too, but Lisa has me aggravated more. I will watch it this week, then make a decision whether or not to continue. This is a "one show at a time" decision.

@BangieB - yes, it's her. My husband made me pause and googled her name because it was driving him crazy:-). I never watched the Last Comic Standing, but he did and said she was rather funny and came in 2nd?

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who watched hoping to see Lisa getting the boot. But I have to admit that my favourite moment was when Giada (my new favourite Food TV host:-)) did not even bother hiding her disdain for Sandy during the exchange about the girl (Kelsey?) who I started calling "Sandy wannabe" pretty much from the moment I saw her. It was absolutely priceless. So much so, in fact, that I rewound and watched it again:-)

@Markbb: Yes. Why do they glare at the contestants? No matter how un-likeable (is that a word?) and/or lame the contestants are, they deserve some honest and helpful criticism of the way they appear on TV, being that they apparently want to be on TV.
All I can figure is that FN hopes another Guy Fieri will fall into their laps and they won't have to do the hard work of developing new shows?

i can't understand why the contestants need to make so many dishes on the fly all the time... if all they want is to taste the cooking, see the personality and the culinary POV. I imagine FN rehearses and tweaks each show they tape a zillion times before they actually TAPE and EDIT to make eveything fit the desired timing.

and for a first challenge it must be sooooooo intimidating to cook for so many important celebrity cooks for the first time... maybe is to weed out the lamos right away... anybody would make rookie mistakes from the nerves...

Thanks, Blue Iris and brooke29. If I recall correctly, yeah, she was pretty funny and got rather far in the show.

Sooo happy to see I was not the only one hoping Lisa would get the boot. As for Corey-why the freight? It's not like the camera in her face was a first. I don't know-she annoyed me too. Didn't see her on Last Comic-so I am basing my opinion off of this show.

@izatryt: Hear ya with Nipa. She was getting on my nerves as well. She needs to step off her high horse also.

@Brooke29: HILARIOUS! I did the same thing!! I was thinking the same thing as Giada. The girl is cute-but SUPER obnoxious.

OMG! I tried watching it last night, but it was just painful for me. Top Chef is so much better, and I feel like Food Network is trying too hard to compete with it.

Who actually has "made it" from the winners of those shoes, as far as getting anywhere with their own show? Correct me if I'm wrong, but not many, if any have...

Oh Food Network, what's happened to you...

Just Guy, but I understand he's "connected".

terrible, terrible, terrible!

another annoying LISA on a food related reality show... WHY OH WHY must we be tortured by the LISA'S?

good news is that she appears to crack her head on the floor in an upcoming episode when she slips in her heels.

that'll teach her.

I will watch until that moment, they owe me the satisfaction of seeing that after having to endure her insipid "I'm so glamorous and amazing, look at me" attitude.

I so enjoyed how much she irritated Alton though. That was worth watching for.

What is really sad here is that the FN has become fodder for non stop criticism by just about anybody who has an interest in food. What does this say people?

boscompb they heap it upon themselves by the truck loads, the line to remember is "I'm the spice fairy" and you'll get another season.....and to think I use to like watching food t.v.............

This show is so stupid. I watched 10 minutes after seeing the contestants (including the Posh Spice twin) and had to turn it.

Hell's Kitchen RULES! Top Chef stinks. I don't like that show anymore.

Gordon Ramsay is funny and at least he doesn't sit behind a table and say "please pack your knives and go."

The show is soooo bad. I miss the FN 'good ole days.' However, I do like Guy Fieri who won one of the shows. Whatever happened to the others?

@Paris, haha, I called her Posh Spice too!

That's a good one! Posh Spice. HaHa.....

@Paris and Southern_Bella: If you could only hear me yelling at the TV. Get Posh Spice off the show...I loved it when she annoyed Alton and that stupid flower fell from her head. She said she was going to reference "The 3 C's" in her commercial but stopped after 2-or maybe that was me tuning her out...Cooking, Community Service, and...?

@Butrflygirly - I can't remember the 3rd C, but she said it twice. I was howling!

@ Southern_bella and Butrflygirly - yes! I found it absolutely brilliant that Alton was really, visibly annoyed by Lisa - and if I remember correctly, she was the only one who drew that kind of reaction from him. I also told my husband at some point that if I heard about her "3 C's" one more time, my head was going to explode. They were, if I am not mistaken: Cooking Education, Community Outreach and Culinary Crafts. Have I mentioned that I am cursed with a very good memory? Don't ask me why I remember this. I have better things to do, really.

This is my first time watching this show, I was never really interested before, I agree with everyone's comments thought about that goofball Lisa and all the others, I thought it was hysterical the way Giada looked at that annoyingly cute girl! And I just love to watch Bobby Flay....

I wasn't planning on watching. That Corey person from Last Comic Standing was competing? What? Are the copious headliner road gigs she must have booked from her early brush with reality fame drying up? She wasn't able to leverage 45 minutes of material into a sitcom? I'm shocked. [/sarcasm]

Nope. Still not gonna watch.

The minute I saw Lisa, I thought of Anna Wintour.

@fatitalianbroad - Good one! ROFL

@izatryt and brooke29: I thought I was going to punch my tv. I tried to tune her out as best as possible. Thank you for filling me in. Who else wants to see Posh fall as bad as I do? I don't care if that's 5 episodes from now (god help us all), I'm watching it. Who wears high heels in the kitchen?? Pompous Posh does. Ok, it's too early for this and i have not had coffee yet..:)

I got such a bad taste in my mouth from the drama on Hell's Kitchen that food-contest winners don't really interest me. Guy Fiero won one of those contents, right? I can't watch 10 seconds of him.

The only reality-based food program I've ever really enjoyed 100% is one shot at Johnson & Wales called Cooking School Stories. I remember the students and techniques and found the food prep very interesting. The instructor (chef) was constructively critical at times but didn't attempt to humiliate or verbally eviscerate his students in the interest of entertainment. The series wasn't grandiose or a characature of the culinary profession which is probably why it flopped.

Food Network Star is meant to entertain us. It appeals to that inner-competitive aspect of our personality. "If that was me I would cook this..." or "If that was me I would say that..." We can also pick our favorite contestant and root for them. After only one episode I'm not ready to pick a favorite yet, but I am hoping Lisa and Nipa get the boot soon. All reality contest shows work on the same formula and its been successful for the networks and producers so these types of shows aren't going anywhere. If you don't like FNS, don't watch it. And don't watch it just so you can dis and complain about it here. Lighten up!! Mix yourself a martini, sit back and relax and just be entertained.

I want to know why Sandra Lee was on the judges' panel...all she did was whine about the bread and talk about how much she hated curry.

I tried and didn't make it through 5 minutes before starting to fast forward on the DVR. 5 minutes later I was erasing it...it was so bad.

I am going to make dinner in my stilettos tonight! I was waiting for someone to bring up aunt sandy. ;-O My husband was begging me to change the channel. But it was like watching the OJ chase......I just couldn't push the button!

I couldn't make it, either. I DVR'ed it just out of curiosity, to see if it had gotten any better. It hadn't. There is a special place in hell, I'm convinced for Bob Tushman and Susie Fogelson.

@bangieB - Right On!!

@BITTER. OMG. You are KIDDING me!!!! (I used "kidding" instead of the word I wanted to use.) Shamdra Lee was on the panel????? She couldn't judge her way out of Burger King, let alone render an informed opinion on anything that involves cooking.

I will never, ever, ever, ever watch NTVFNS. ANY chance of credibility is permanently lost.

@chiff - Right On!!

Oh Wait! I have to watch Posh Spice fall and hit her head first.

@chiff - inadvertently, Sandy provided my favourite minute and a half of the show (I wrote about it yesterday, way upthread). Or rather, Giada did, because of the way she reacted to Sandy's comment. I loved every second of it. That said, I also kept repeating, like a crazy person, "how can she judge food??? It is so wrong, on so many levels!"

I decided to watch the show because of the girl who cooks Indian food... I've been hoping for a long time that FN would have a show in that vein. But she was awful. I don't know if I'll watch the rest or not... perhaps I will tune in for the demise of Posh, if nothing else. :)

I too has happy to see Nipa as a contestant. I was really put off by her arrogance! Maybe after this past week she will settle down. I hope so as I only want to hate one contestant!

I know what you mean, izatryt. I'd like to exclusively focus my hatred on Pompous Posh (GREAT name). But I think Nipa might be the one who says "I can't DO this anymore!" on some later ep. That's kind of worth waiting for, too.

@annien - I hope it isn't too many eps in the future because I am not sure how much of this I can take. I have a tiny threshold for....Actually, I am not sure what "for" is this time. :-O

This show is good in a train wreck sort of way. Giada laying the smackdown was a definite highlight. Unfortunately the FN wants people like these contestants as hosts instead of proven and seasoned chefs. Tushman's comments about being intimidated by a fancy chef were especially irritating.

Don't get me wrong, if they want to have hosts like these it is fine with me, but I wish that wasn't all they had. I DVR Molto Mario the one time it is on a week just because I want a different, non-30 minute, non-quick fix, non-semi homemade cooking show.

No wonder Emeril is moving to FLN!

my favorite part was when bobby flay told the contestants who made the meatloaf "we WANTED to like it" ouch.

I'm actually a fan of the show. The competition combines two of my loves, food and performance. I enjoy the extra layer added by the fact that great cooking does not necessarily a great tv host make. Also, as intriguing as the food on Top Chef is, I just can't deal with that level of overwrought interpersonal drama. People are cruddy enough to each other in the real world - I'd rather not have my often precarious faith in humanity further destroyed by watching contestants psychologically shred each during my leisure time. And yes, I know that the show intentionally tries to portray the contestants in a relatively positive light because it's necessary to the branding of the new show that will hopefully be created. Don't mind. (Though of course, they have to have a delicious cartoon villain that people love to hate, hence the casting of Lisa. Those of you crying for her dismissal will be missing her like crazy once she's gone - count on it ;-)).

I agree that Nipa's coming off pretty badly. It's really a shame - she teaches at the cooking school I volunteer at, and I've audited one of her classes, and she was absolutely wonderful! Super down to earth, lots of fun, great food. Either she's super nervous and overcompensating as a result, or a victim of manipulative editing, or both.

Not watching. But laughed when, in the previews, Bob Cushman says, "This is going to change one of your lives FOREVER!" Bob, more like 5 minutes, like Amy from last year and Dan/Steve from the first year. How can FoodNetwork seriously promote this show as life changing to the winner? But then again, that whole Jag/Amy incident from last year was a complete set-up, so the show creators clearly take us for idiots.

I watched an entire day of reruns a week or so ago and what i liked about the show was that the judges are not nearly as snarky as Padma Lakshmi is on Top Chef; but dearly beloved, why oh why is this show even on the air? Never again will i waste an entire day watching this (or anything like it) even while i am working in the kitchen at home. Don't care for Giada, either-- she's kinda snarky and exactly WHAT are her credentials, anyway?

@phillipjman: you thought Tushman's comments were irritating? I thought it was comedy gold. I laughed out loud at that comment.

@annien: it's totally her. Can't wait to see why she does that move...

Oh yes I thought it was Posh spice

hobcat57, it's so interesting that you say the judges aren't as snarky as Padma Lakshmi. I think I agree, but I actually get the sense that it's because Tushman and Fogelson aren't actually sharp enough to be snarky. I find them to be utterly witless and devoid of snap. Which is why I tend to think they fall back on the whole 'concerned face' thing they do. Susie especially - when her eyes fall downcast and she tells the contestant that she's 'disappointed' in them, or when Bob gets that exasperated look like, 'you guys aren't taking this seriously enough!' It cracks me up. You disappointed in them, Bob & Suse? Then *cast better people,* for crying out loud.

I remember Kelsey from her show on local cable. She is sooooo Provo I can't believe it.

I only watch it for the comedy aspects of it. And so I can recap it for my food blog: http://minxeats.blogspot.com/2008/06/next-food-network-tool-star.html

I watched the first 2 seasons of TNFNS but missed the third one. I can't believe that if it's going to "change you life forever" you would put a winner like Party Line on at 4am!!! Oh and that's doubly confusing because FN here goes to infomercials until 7am.

I just watched the season opener of season 4 today and I'll probably keep watching it just to see Lisa go. She just isn't someone who seems like she can work with other people and/or be a part of the FN "family". (Plus I can't wait to see her biff it in those heels too!!)

However, what I really want to say about all this is WHY aren't they giving the challengers from Bobby Flay's Throwdown their own shows?????? Most of those people are already being fooled into thinking they're on a FN show and they do great, right off the bat! Offer them the shows they thought they were going to be on in the first place and we could avoid all this silliness and maybe get some good new shows! (Like the Muffaletta challenge that was on this afternoon. A sandwich show, like they thought they were on would be great and they were naturals!)

It is so bad that I can't stop watching it!. Lisa needs to come out in a french maid's outfit to complete her look. @vivianne, great idea about Bobby Flay's challengers.

I caught part of the new contest - only watched because of what I read here. Lisa wants to be connected to the 3C's, but I think of her as the 3P's.........Pretentious Pompous Posh. Cooking in heels is hilarious. OTOH, can you see her flopping around in Mario's orange clogs? I hope they keep her around for awhile - it would be fun to see her knocked off those high heels and breathe the same air as the rest of the population.

We have all learned that it makes absolutely no difference who wins anyway. FN is SO dumbed down and it's such a shame. Shamdra is a judge????? Holy Cool Whip! I'll watch the "STARS" (GAG) if I happen to run across it, but it's not high on my list. Only a few keepers left as far as interesting cooking shows are concerned and that's all I'm interested in seeing.

Can't believe Jennifer got the boot. I thought it would be Aaron. I was a tad annoyed by the little stunt he pulled, telling the judges that his son ran away before the comp started - lame and majorly manipulative. Brotha lost points with me at least. Nipa needed to go, how can you be a chef or cook and not want to handle fish?

@chiffonade - Yup, chiff, 'tis true; Sandy was a judge. Methinks she finagled a spot on the panel to give herself credibility.
