The Neely's have ANOTHER show..WTH??
Am I the only person who thinks they didn't deserve the first one? Last night I saw an ad for their new "on the road" show. I won't be watching. Anyone else care to join me? Maybe I'll DVR Anne Burrell's show since I'm working at 9:30am, then I can watch it instead of the Neelys....

They're the new generation of Food Network star, where the network owns your a$$.
In the past, you could develop your own show and your own product line, and the Food Network didn't even take a slice the pie. Now they own you and everything you do and they will make you work. Look at all the new stars, they've all got three shows each.
Matio had Molto Mario. Emeril had Essense and then Live. But the newbies like Ray, Fieri, Neely, Sunny Anderson, they're all running with two or three each.
This is the future of the Food Network ladies and gentlemen and it kinda sucks. Fine Living and Travel Channel will be picking up some of the load which could be good.

I've stopped watching Fn because of they constantly pushing bad with more bad, and hope that it will be good...crazy!!
Markbb at 4:41PM on 06/27/08
I am going to start self medicating! This surely can't be true. Somebody tell me I am going to wake up and this thread will have been a bad dream. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

i must admit, i was excited about the Neely's first show when it came out, since i love bbq. However, since their first episode pretty much showed everything about their bbq recipes in one sitting, the following episodes ran out of "steam" (material) fast. I couldn't believe the mix of food that followed, always seemed like second-rate "experimental" recipes to me.
I'm with Markbb, FN is just pushing quantity over quality.
billyjoe at 5:33PM on 06/27/08
The FN seems to be stuck in some sort of a "mid life" crisis. It's as if they are running amuck in Home Depot scooping up anything that is new, flashy and on sale. Instead of carefully choosing the higher end "furnishings and amenities", they are opting for lower quality merchandise and in quantity. At the rate they are going, they will soon find themselves with a huge inventory of dated, mass produced merchandise that is "yesterday's news" and no longer in demand.
Boscompb at 11:24PM on 06/27/08
Isn't this the same show that the Deen boys had last year? I caught an episode of that. It was just one long advertisement for whichever shops/restaurants they visited. It was really bad. Each segment ended with mail order info.
If I wanted to watch a thirty-minute commercial, I'd start watching late night infomercials. Although, on that note, I still have an irrational desire to get a Magic Bullet (the blender, not the vibrator).
blackolive at 12:22AM on 06/28/08
Olive, I think you'd like either Bullet. They add a lot to life.
This is the same show as the Deene brothers had last summer, and I think before that there was an FN show which ran for years and years and was always about how someone's Aunt Martha made Cheese Crisps and you could order them by mail. Was it Food Finds? Something tells me the same R&D group is at work on this one.
As to the Neelys I never watched them but they don't seem like the most mobile of the FN hosts. Now, Alton looked at home on a motorcycle, but the Neelys would always be wondering if anyone was bothering to baste the pork shoulder back home.

I am sooooo happy I DVR everything. Some of the shows I watch are on at odd hours, particularly the ones on PBS, but if I was stuck at home, too ill to click the remote, and the Neelys came on, I think I'd just have to fall into a coma. I don't know why I don't like them, but I watched maybe two episodes and saw no reason to waste electrons on any more.
Bobby Flay has a new show, and I'll be watching that. He's my guilty pleasure. I just like to look at him. The fact that he is cooking is a bonus. Again, no clue why. He just amuses me.
dbcurrie at 2:06AM on 06/28/08
Ugh. WTF is right. What are they thinking??? At least they have the new show with Anne Burrell coming out. I am hoping to actually learn something from that one.
They also gave the "Cooking for Real" chick another show. It's more "fluff" like all the other non-cooking shows.
chiff0nade at 10:54AM on 06/28/08
Spare me - all of the FN fluff. It's as sticky and artifically sweet as the marshmallow stuff and makes me gag.
PerkyMac at 11:13AM on 06/28/08
I don't watch food network any longer: my TV has an off switch. If I want to look for recipes using specific ingredients I go to their website and search. If the recipe that comes up is by one of the people who reliably turn out edible and interesting food, I print and cook. If enough people don't watch or download recipes by the talent we don't like, the network will rework the schedule. I miss Sara Moulton and Ina but I can still get the recipes. I just find it amazing that a network can program 24/7 about FOOD and cooking! No wonder they keep trying new things.
ocarol at 11:33AM on 06/28/08
I absolutely cannot stand to listen to that woman speak, the way she goes on in that ridiculous way of hers makes me want to vomit, if I happen to put on FN and its THEM I immediately turn it off.
stephie at 3:52PM on 06/28/08
Mrs. Neely is sooooo annoying. I could like the show if it was just him he's
quiet and informative. But her & her high pitched voice and her "spice fairy" junk is just bad!
dlane at 4:24PM on 06/28/08
my skin crawls when she calls him "daddy"
_greenbean at 5:12PM on 06/28/08
I can't stand them or that chick on "Cooking for Real." I mean, the woman couldn't cook her way out of a paper bag! She can barely chop an onion. Oh, and after having been on the air for all of three months they are giving her a second show and calling a few new episodes of the first one her "second season." Give me a break!
I pretty much don't watch FN anymore unless Alton Brown is on the show. I would watch if they gave Adam Roberts a real show, though. I like Adam.
Calichef at 7:21PM on 06/28/08
So glad I'm not alone. Some of your comments (esp. the Magic Bullet debate) made me laugh out loud.
I was going to raise the issue of Ms. Anderson's second show, too, but thought that was too much for one posting. I'm still trying to understand which of her credentials (the dj gig or the pilot thing) earned her not one, but 2 shows.
Maybe I'll change my user name to "spice fairy" just for kicks.
AuntJone at 8:16PM on 06/28/08
I honestly believe that Neely's aren't putting on an act. That's who they are and yes Mrs. Neely is a little "extra" in the personality department. I don't watch the show either, but I do find a good recipe from them from time to time. The only FN shows I DVR are Jamie Oliver, Good Eats, Barefoot Contessa, Tyler Florence and Everyday Italian. I try to watch FN to be challenged and inspired. The above folks deliver.
I think the Neelys, Paula Deen, Sunny Anderson, Rachel Ray and certainly Sandra Lee and reflect the way the majority of Americans cook -- the use of ample "store-bought" help. (Please note that Deen and Anderson have made some bookmark-worthy recipes.)
Let's face it. If you're on this site, you're a foodie and could probably be the Next Food Network star. I'll admit that my frustration with the majority of the non-chefs is that I watch and think, "I can do that. Why did you get a show and not me.?"
NuJoi at 10:01PM on 06/28/08
As great as it is that the majority of Americans cook this way, myself included, I still love to watch great chefs on television. There's something so neat about watching a real professional do what he or she does best, and clearly, there's demand for it. I've been watching a lot of PBS shows like America's Test Kitchen to meet my food tv quota.
And for the record, I think some of you were referencing the Silver Bullet. The Magic Bullet is the food processor, and the Silver Bullet is probably not used in a kitchen. Well, maybe some of you...
kmnola at 11:15PM on 06/28/08
OMG, another road/food show. FN has enough of these, now the Neelys AND Sunny Anderson. Enough already!!!!
BITTER at 11:33PM on 06/28/08
My mouth dropped open when I seen they had another show. My thought is they are so hard core, demanding, strict on their show "The next food network star". Then in return they hand us the Neely's. "Cooking for Real" is right up there in the annoying category also.
lilyx5100 at 11:24AM on 07/06/08
I just found this website and I really like it. I have honestly tried to watch Down Home with the Neely's but I just can't take it. I am a big Food Ntwk fan and have my likes and dislikes. But Gina Neely drives me insane. If you've ever heard the whine of a jet engine getting up to speed, then you know how her voice can grate on your last nerve. My ears bleed just trying to listen to her. This in no way is a reflection on her cooking abilities. She's just annoying with all that cooing and touchy-feely and eye-batting. Get a room already. Sorry if my first post was a rant....but I had to vent about her somewhere. Thanks for listening.
foodie4life at 1:13PM on 10/12/08
@foodie4life ~ Let me be the first to welcome you to SE. Lots of fun and great information with wonderful folks here.
I believe the vast majority agree with you regarding Gina Neely. What were they thinking? Pat seems like a great guy and the real cook. Unfortunately, I can't watch him because she gets on my last nerve.
Anyone else think Sunny Anderson is a Rachael Ray clone? Not as loud, obnoxious and annoying, but really close. Non-stop chatter and anecdotes are not necessary!!!! I long for real chefs and hope for more Anne Burrelll and others of her talent and ability.
