That One Meal
The one meal. You know the one - the one that someone you are close to always makes, often because it is the only thing they can make :). my dad always makes potatoes and kielbasa. its simple but delicious. stromboli is the only thing my BF can make without a microwave. (he does use pre-bought dough, but i let him slide) so, serious eaters, what is that one meal?

My sister: Guacamole
My mom: Chicken packs on the grill or oven
My sister-in-law: Cheesy potatoes, which I hate (I love her though)

My mom can make many other things, but she cooks for one now that we're all out of the house and the chicken pack is pretty simple.

What is a chicken pack?
PerkyMac at 12:57AM on 06/24/08
I was going to ask that Perky?
My mom makes potatoes and onions with olive oil which are sliced and baked in a covered dish so simple and sooo good.
The Husband makes a wicked breakfast and there was a time when without that meal I wouldn't have been able to survive. Omelet, sausage or bacon and perfect hash browns.

Oh goodness, when my dad is left to his own devices, he thinks a perfect meal is a half pound of pasta mixed with a can (yes, I know, it's an atrocity) of peas, and about half a bottle of olive oil. It's a nightmare.
My best friend can only bake one thing, and it's cinnamon cherry oatmeal cookies.
My aunt is the family purveyor of mac and cheese.
My mom makes delicious spaghetti sauce, but she does make once a week, and eats it three out of seven days during said week.

Like Debra Romano (from Everybody Loves Raymond) and her Lemon Chicken? I'm going to have to give this some thought. I really can't pidgeon-hole anyone right now! (I guess that's lucky...LOL.)

when i was growing up one aunt made a meatloaf to die for, that may be because my grandmother who lived with us hated meatloaf so mom never made it. i had another aunt that made awesome lasagna and every year at christmas she and my uncle would make me a meatless one just big enough for two servings. these days SO makes awesome seafood pasta and great grilled mussels and crab. He also does a Very tasty rotesserie chicken. For a guy with little sense of taste, he cooks very well. although when we have guests i have to adjust the seasonings since he can be a little heavy hande with the salt. but for just us its great.

My papa: Goulash!
My bf: Bolognaise
Me: Tomato Salad
Mom: Asiain Coleslaw
Sister: Mini meat tarts
All foolproof!

My mother-in-law - pineapple chicken. It's chicken pieces smothered with store-bought BBQ sauce, with a tin of pineapple chunks, baked to death. Whenever we're invited to her house for a meal, we know it's going to be a pineapple chicken (no matter what the season or the occasion is).

My best friend always makes it up as he goes along, but it always involves the same ingredients: several kinds of frozen fish (prawns, cod, eel, squid, cuttlefish - all strait from the freezer and usually with a crust of snow), a packet of pre-cut, 'Asian-style' vegetables (bean sprouts, julienned red peppers, shredded cabbage - usually past expiry date), and some recently-acquired condiment in a jar that he/we have never tried before, often involving MSG and some gross secret ingredient like fermented fish guts or still beating prawn hearts. His cooking makes me sad.

@Jerzee - I googled chicken pack and it's what I thought it might be - a meal wrapped and baked in a foil pack in the oven (grill would work, too).
When I was a girl scout leader we used to do hamburger, potato slices, mushrooms, carrot slices, onions & garlic, seasonings (forget what else) in foil packs and cook on an open fire. Similar.
I found one chicken recipe that Aunt Shamdy would like.

My brother-in-law (sister's hubby): Microwave Mac&Cheese from the blue box--he's quite proud of this skill. We don't ask him to make much.
Neighbor John: Chicken Wings grilled on his Big Green Egg. He won't tell anyone his recipe, but it involves three different bottles from Costco, LOL.
Hubby: If there's a grill, he will grill steaks. He will find a way to procure some prime steaks and he will grill for 2 or for 20. (He really did cook prime steaks for twenty and I though I'd have a heartattack when I did the math and realized how much all that meat cost.)
MIL: Cream cheese & jalepeno pepper jelly and Wheat Thins. Never fails, then we have to take her out to eat. She has never cooked for us, however my husband swears she's a great cook.
Grandma Bessie: Fried Chicken with all the fixin's. You could count on the menu for Sunday dinner.

Dad: Pizza
Sister-in-law: Potato mushroom soup casserole
Neighbor: Carne Asada and Green Chilies
Hubby: Beer Can Chicken
Now I am hungry thank you all very much!
bodaciousgirl at 3:31PM on 06/24/08
Best Friend: Broccoli Casserole
BF: Grilled Tuna Steaks/Steaks/Bubba Burgers/Corn. Pretty much anything grilled. :) usually not chicken though.
Dad: now the cook of the house. I can depend on him to make something utterly delicious for dinner with a dessert that is SINFUL. Who knew??!
My friends really don't cook. They say that's what they depend on me for. They have the parties and I cook. It's funny and I love it. :) And they always ask for more. Is there a better feeling??
Butrflygirly at 4:00PM on 06/24/08
I'm so severely traumatised by my MIL's pineapple chicken that I forgot to write about other people:-)
My father-in-law - chicken cutlets, thinly sliced, breaded and pan-fried. These are so much better than the above-mentioned pineapple chicken, even though I seldom eat breaded anything (not a big fan).
My sister-in-law - vegetable salad.
My husband - breakfast in general, eggs and potato hash (or it's cousin, sweet potato hash), in particular. So very good! Come to think of it, my husband can cook more (and better) than anybody else in his family!

@caley, It is posts like yours that bring pure delight to this site and hearty laughter to my terminal. I laughed out loud with tears in my eyes as I read the description of your friend's culinary artistry. I was going to list some of the favorites in my circle but now I won't dare compete. Thanx

A chicken pack is a foil pouch containing 1 chicken breast, garlic, red skins, onion, olive oil, s+p. Sometimes we add rosemary, sometimes we do italian dressing, sometimes we omit the potatoes and add lemons, parsley and chopped tomato. You just make one per person.
I'm sure you guys have done this and call it something different. We call them chicken packs! :)

mom: rice noodle casserole (she makes many other things, but this is what she's noted for inside and outside of the family)
dad: breakfast food - omelettes, pancakes, etc.
sister-in-law: Chocolate pudding pie
brother 1: maybe a frozen pizza? hehe...
brother 2: everrrryyything - chicken, rice dishes...good cook!

@czken, I'm glad that my description of Max's vile offerings amused you! It did occur to me that Max wouldn't be nearly as impressed were he to stumble across this site and read my comments (in fact, he'd be even less impressed to realise that I've made disparaging comments about his culinary technique in other serious eats posts over the years as well). Oh well, I suppose you reap what you sew - he once gave me a filled cookie, where the 'surprise' filling was a slimy lump of pickled herring!
caley at 1:40PM on 06/25/08
My dad makes the best pilav ever. My mom can pretty much cook anything she wants. My ex bf always made stuffed bell peppers - you know, the kind with the tomato sauced rice and the cheese? I hated it.
BangieB at 2:58PM on 06/25/08
My grandmother ALWAYS cooks the exact same meal. For the appetizer, matzoh ball soup, main course, stuffed cabbage, and for dessert, the most unappetizing brownies the world has ever seen.
