recipes2share.com - new gallery open!
I feel as if I'm beginning to spam the site - its not my intention!!
I received a lot of positive feedback yesterday when I offered to host a similar facility to the sadly closed tastespotting. We have worked hard & have one up & running, though obviously empty right now.
Please come & visit and if you do like what we have created then join in and lets try & fill the void. Tastespotting was really fab & had a huge data bank - lets work together to try and create a similar good quality resource.
Days are early & though we have tested & re-tested, glitches do happen. If you find one please let me know & we will put it right.
Happy viewing & I really look forward to getting to know you

Recipes2share - I have a reason for asking but can you please tell me why tastespotting closed?? If you'd prefer to answer in private, please e-mail me - chiffonade@hotmail.com. Thanks.

OK, I caught myself up on the other threads about this subject so unless I'm missing something other than the compensation issue, no worries.
chiff0nade at 8:38AM on 06/14/08
Holy Moly - how did you do all that in a day????? I'm in awe! I bookmarked you and hope to visit often.

I can get to your front page, but when I click on any of the links I get this message...
We apologise but for security reasons your access to recipes2share have been blocked.
What's going on? Your site really looks neat.
Carosone at 11:28PM on 06/14/08
Hi,
The site has security protection and right now i can't give you a full answer but if your server alloactes random IP addresses then it may be because this is a blocked address. I research further at this end, but unfortunately this protection is seesntial.
recipes2share at 5:17AM on 06/15/08
Find out what this security is. Now having a great working knowledge of everything internet, taking down my firewall, turning off anti virus, accepting cookies and rebooting twice...what the heck is this security issue? You will need to make sure we can access the site before you advertise it. Not everyone has a computer without their own security it is 2008 for crying out loud. How do you know what security is essential if you do not even know why we cannot access it?
Simple things that can be handled quickly.
JerzeeTomato at 8:43AM on 06/15/08
@Jerzee: I'm pretty sure he means that certain IP addresses or ranges are blocked from accessing the site/server for security reasons on their end. Like possibly they were receiving attacks from computers at certain IPs and it is essential that they continue "this protection" (ie. blocking access to certain IPs).
I'm pretty sure there isn't a requirement on the user/viewer to fiddle with their own security settings (ie. firewall, antivirus, cookies, etc.) to get the site to allow access. I'm pretty sure the danger is not that someone has a computer without their own security. It's pretty doubtful that a compromised machine (from not having their own security) would somehow infect a website (or its server) just by viewing it or even filling out a form on it.
I looked at the site when he first posted this thread yesterday. I could view everything just fine. So I'm pretty sure he did make sure people can access it before making this thread. I can't imagine that he could expect people to end up being on IPs that were considered suspicious/malicious on his server to be attempting to view it and have a problem.

Wonderful! Wonderful! Thank you.
izatryt at 3:46PM on 06/15/08
Why would I have a blocked IP address if I've never accessed your website before? I don't really understand this b/c I've never encountered this problem with any other website I have ever visited.
I was really looking forward to using your new site, too....oh well.
Carosone at 4:18PM on 06/15/08
@carosone: IP banning has a lot of problems. It often results in unintentional blocking. Depends on how liberally it is done. If multiple IPs were harassing their site, they may have blocked not just those IPs but IPs that are similar to those (ie. a whole range of IPs) to try and completely block off any possible attack (ie. if the attackers tried to switch IPs). Thus, IPs that have never visited before can be blocked (in fact, that is the intention...to block before they visit and attack). Clearly, this can result in a lot of unintentional blocks of non-malicious users/visitors.
In addition, if the user is using an internet service provider that has a pool of IPs that they assign to a user each time they sign onto the internet, then blocking one of those IPs will prevent non-malicious users that get assigned that IP from the pool to be blocked.
Because of these problems with IP blocking and because there are ways to get around it (ie. using proxies, etc.), not a lot of sites even bother to use IP blocking as a primary solution. Therefore, it's unlikely that having a problem on one website would mean that you would have experienced it on other websites before or that it's a sign you'll experience it with other websites.
I'm not sure why such a website would have attracted such attacks that they would prompt the need for such measures, but hopefully as mentioned, they'll look into it and loosen their IP blocking so that less people are unintentionally blocked.
In the meantime, you could try this:

It was posted in the other thread about Tastespotting. And no offense to recipies2share, it looks a bit more polished.

Interesting enough I have many IPs and none of them can access any of the content. I certainly do not believe for one moment that all my IPs are blocked. The website is borked. Someone there needs to unblock the access to the content. I cannot even register for it, that shows it is intentionally borked or blocked. I have some patience and it is not endless. Someone should have checked all of this before coming here to advertise our support.
Simple little bits of common sense.
JerzeeTomato at 9:37PM on 06/15/08
@Jerzee - You splain, I listen. Huh? I am a complete idiot when it comes to all of this. Please tell me what I am missing here. What is an IP?
izatryt at 9:55PM on 06/15/08
An IP is internet protocol address http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address
I have many of them. Husband is an IT professional (web apps among others) and I am not too shabby. The website is blocking content. Doesn't matter what IP you are using no one is getting content.
If you are chime in.
JerzeeTomato at 12:16AM on 06/16/08
I have no problem at all - every link I clicked worked. I hadn't tried them earlier, so perhaps all is NOW well?
Again, I'm truly in awe at what an awesome job you've done, and in such a short time.
PerkyMac at 12:24AM on 06/16/08
I'm sorry if you are having problems & we will look further into it, though many hundreds of entries to the site are continuing but I do need to know if there is a problem.
To answer an earlier question, i am saddened that we do need this firewall and even more saddened that hackers have and do feel it necessary to deface and destroy the site - its a non-commercial foodie site.
Neither the website nor the security around it are things we take lightly.
recipes2share at 10:07AM on 06/16/08
sorry, I'm being impolite..
I would lilke to say many thanks for all the kind words of support we have received and we really appreciate your time to do this via the forum & in personal emails. As I said, this is non-commercial & there is actually nothing in it for us other than a passion for food & cooking (& a load of extra work!).
recipes2share at 10:10AM on 06/16/08
I'm blocked too. IP is gmail.com.
Blue Iris at 3:56PM on 06/16/08
I can't say how sorry I am for all this...right now i still can't give a full answer but I do understand what is happening & I CERTAINLY don't want visitors blocked! Please understand that this security was a necessary move because we had a dreadful week with hackers last week, but it does seem to have gone a little mad(??) ..talking about the fire wall. I have passed this to my webmaster (my loving hubbie) and we will consult with the security company...I want your visits!! Please stay with us, we are GMT+1 in Europe so a different time zone. I do take all this seriously & personally as have dedicated quite a chunk of my life to the website and i want to SOLVE problems, not provide them. Please, I just ask for a little space to try & solve this problem which is equally as irritating to me as I still cannot understand why we were targeted by hackers and with this I suppose they still think they are winning???

ACCESS PROBLEMS
It looks like some people are having problems accessing the site. This is due to our firewall - as you will know, we have been attacked recently so have tightened up the firewall but may have gone a little too far!. Could I please ask those who are experiencing problems to try again and if still blocked let me know the exact message you are getting (I have changed the generic message to make it more specific). This way I can get a clue as to what the problem is and get it solved for you. THANKS. Fiona.
recipes2share at 5:33PM on 06/16/08
@ Blue Iris, your ip address would be a set of 4 numbers, separated by periods. It's a number that your ISP assigns to your computer. Gmail.com may be who you use for email, but it has nothing to do with your IP address.
If you're really curious about what your ip address is, go to the website whatismyip.com and it will tell you.
However, unless you've paid extra for a permanent IP address, or unless your ISP happens to assign them permanently, that IP address will probably change periodically.
If you're on a network at home or at work you may also have an IP address for the internal network, generally using something like 10.0.X.X or 192.168.X.X where the Xs would be different numbers depending on how the network is set up. Those numbers could be anything up to 254. Those numbers don't matter, as they are just internal network addresses. The ones that count are the ones you get from your ISP, because that's how your computer is recognized on the Internet.

ACCESS PROBLEMS
I believe I now have the correct settings on my firewall not to block IP addresses that may be similar to those who hacked in. Please try again and let me know if it is OK.
As for foodgawker.com being a more 'polished' site - I presume this means less cluttered' ? Please remember chaps that recipes2share is actually an on-line foodie magazine with hundreds of recipes, articles and book reviews. Our photo gallery is one integrated element, not the sole purpose of the site.
