Shedding Some Skin (Garlic that is)
I adore garlic and cook with very frequently. As a result, I often crawl into bed with garlic perfumed fingertips. This is not at all sexy. The pre-peeled, jarred/bagged variety is not good. Are there really any of those devices for peeling garlic that actually make the task faster and keep your skin untainted?

In he Macy's martha collection is some stainless steel bar thing you hold.
Myself I buy Bath Body Works Orange Ginger hand soap. It gets rid of the smell of everything.

I have had mine for 8 years and wouldn't be without it. Some of the skins stay inside, so you just have to rinse it out.
I have a Rosle stainless steel garlic press, so when I'm done with the garlic, I just rinse my hands while rubbing my fingers on the handles under cold running water. Works just like buying that stainless bar thing.

I second pthom, i LOVE my rubber tube thingy, I think I got one at Ikea for like a dollar and I use it all the time, I wouldn't be without it (or my garlic press)

Get a 'Nonion'--or just a piece of stainless steel and rub it on your hands under running water--it works pretty good at removing garlic/onion odor from the hands.

I'm lucky in that I'm with a guy who thinks garlic is perfume.

Lilla's right. Even a big spoon does the trick, you don't have to but anything fancy.

Hmm, I just smash garlic cloves with the side of a chinese cleaver...very relaxing at the end of a long day.
Or if you have those silicon trivets, you can roll a clove of garlic in it, it works like the garlic skin remover tubes.

Here's a tip that always works for me:
Just place the unpeeled garlic cloves on your cutting board and whack them a couple of times with the side of a large knife. The skins should slide off pretty easily after a couple of hits.
You might end up with garlic cloves that are a bit flatter than usual, but it doesn't really matter to me as it all ends up in my stomach either way :)

I have the rubber tube thingy and it is amazing. But, I have a husband who adores eau de garlique!

if you have a stainless steel sink, you can just rub your hands on that.
lemon juice works pretty well, too.
cybercita at 8:52PM on 06/05/08
I'm with cybercita, I simply rub my hands all over the bottom of our SS sink when I'm done with the garlic then wash my hands, no leftover smells.

I just smash garlic cloves with the bottom of a beer bottle, which encourages me to drink before, during, and after cooking.
jorach at 3:44PM on 06/06/08
I think a few folks here do what I do.. just smash it with the back of my knife.
HumbleRecipes at 4:12PM on 06/06/08
lay on them with the flat of a knife. You'll feel it when the skin cracks and they're simple to peel that way. You can use one of the silicone tubes, but they never worked for me except with the little teeny garlics in the center of the head that are impossible to peel anyway. Don't worry about the garlic smell on your fingertips. Think of it as an aphrodisiac.

I'm a knife-smasher, too.
And...I keep a bottle of lemon juice in the fridge for two purposes..."bleaching" strawberry stains from my fingernails and getting rid of the garlic smell or 20 pounds of chopped onions smell.
