Margarita Mix

I know I know, it's not very Serious Eats of me to buy a margarita mix, but we've got a pretty large party and I don't have much time to make a mix because I want to spend time with my girlfriend, okay?

And additionally, i'm not going to be squeezing limes all night because it's hot and I don't really like squeezing limes in the first place.

So if anyone could help out this lazy man I would be forever indebted to you. Forever. I'll make you a pizza.

and holy crap I submitted this post and then I see the front page about the margarita book wowwww.

Don't know if they are still selling it but Williams-Sonoma had a good margaritz mix last summer.

Prairie: Like what mix to buy?

@kjgibson: ooo. awesome, i'll check that out thanks.

@AKSliceMaster: Yes. That's what i'm asking holmes. Any reccs?

whoa that's quite an intimate compliment Adam...

Jose Cuervo makes a pretty good pre-mix, I know it comes in a half gallon bottle... I'm not sure if it comes in any other sizes... what's that say about me?

If you have any leftovers it makes a fabulous marinate for grilled chicken :)

For large parties we always buy the Jose Cuervo pre-mixed. All you gotta do is fill a glass with ice and pour. No need to add tequila or anything. They come in two sizes (not sure if they are half gallon and gallon, or what), and if you plan on having a lot of drinking guests, you can buy a box for about $70. Super easy. Set out fresh lime slices for those who like it.

Thanks for your help yall.

Yikes. Jose Cuervo---no, no, no. This is bad stuff. Expect a gnarly hangover.

A good easy alternative to squeezing a bunch of limes is to use frozen limeade concentrate. Reconstitute it with half the water that the instructions call for, and you're good to go. And if there's any way you can swing it, get some tequila that's 100% blue agave. You can usually find a cheap one if you must, and it will be so, so worth it. Cuervo is only 51% agave, which is the minimum legal requirement, and the rest is the cheapest sugars available along with some artificial "gold) coloring.

sorry lovelybunny, I have to reply to you to say that not only do I not consider it to be "bad stuff" it's never given me a hangover either.

I'm not a margarita expert as I'm not a huge tequila fan, but for a pre-mix, which is what he was asking about, it's certainly not rot gut.

it's not like I suggested he use Pepe Lopez. :P

Williams Sonoma, I second that.

The other one I'd do, if I had very little time, is take the idea of the frozen limeade above, throw it in a pitcher, and add about a 1/2 c. of Cointreau or Grand Marnier per pitcher of margies. Ups the ante a bit.

I tended bar for seven years, and I'd always premake mine with bottled lime juice, Cointreau and a dash of salt. Great for big parties.

Hmm. Yeah. Making my own mix with the juice seems to be a good idea. Definitely gonna get some good tequila.

Yeah -- I checked their website and W-S still sells a mix but man, it's expensive. Classic Margarita Mix is $12.95 for 32 ounces! Yikes! You could make quite a bit more than that yourself. I think you could make a good mix even with bottled lime juice.

I'll second (or third) the recommendation for Cuervo's premix. But I'll add that their Golden Margarita premix is quite a step up from their normal lime mix. They use Grand Marnier in the mix. We usually get a pretty big bottle from Costco for not that much.

Otherwise, frozen limeade is good also. Aunt made margarita sorbets out of lime sorbet with a bit of tequila and Grand Marnier poured over. Pretty tasty.

I get a mix at Safeway called "Dr Swami & Bone Daddy's" Margarita Mix. It's near the Cuervo Mix. I like this stuff because it actually looks like lime juice and not like coolant. I think it's about $4 a bottle. I highly recommend it. Most folks I serve it to think the margaritas are home made.

My vote goes to the frozen limeade. We had a margarita party a while back and used that. They tasted like we used fresh lime juice not the processed taste of the bottled mix. Good tequila, cointreau....... Oh Yeah!

Frozen limeade! It makes delicious, very fresh-tasting drinks.
Also, in supermarkets and liquor stores near me (Massachusetts) there is a brand called Stirrings I like, it has no high fructose corn syrup. To me, that makes a big difference in flavor.

Much like Kelly (above), I've used Jose Cuervo pre-mixed in both regular and strawberry flavors. It's not bad...but not thrilling either. It would probably be best to blend your own (using another mix) with shaved ice, etc. FYI.

Chew on That

I just made margs last weekend, huge hit...I used the stirrings mix and added tequila and POM juice...oh god...soooo good.

I went out and bought the Stirrings mix - and love it! I got the grapefruit margarita mix ($4 at TJ Maxx). I find the Jose Cuervo to be too fake tasting. For a short while, Target had a good one from the Swell brand, but they recalled it (something about causing cancer - no wonder it was so good).

i also suggest getting a 100% blue agave tequila. "hornitas" is reasonably priced and reasonably easy to find. for those of you who do not suffer nasty hangovers with adulterated (note, i didn't say *bad*) tequilas - consider yourself lucky! for others, it's a ticket to can't-even-make-coffee-the-next-morning-cause-the-grinder's -too-loud hangover hell...
