Let's Talk CHOCOLATE...What's your favorite "eating" chocolate?
Most chocolate lovers I know, munch on chocolate everyday. I have my artisan favorites, but for everyday snacking I eat Trader Joes. What's your favorite?

I agree. Trader Joe's is great for everyday munching. But I also like Lindt

I don't have access to Trader Joe's nearby, but when I was overseas, I fell in love with Ritter chocolate from Germany, which I can find on occasion around me. It's so smooth and creamy. Nothing like the grainy Hershey's.
Traveller at 12:53PM on 06/09/08
Didn't Hersheys move their plants to Mexico and raise prices on their chocolate??
Markbb at 1:17PM on 06/09/08
European chocolate is generally creamy; that graininess is what Americans are used to and supposedly prefer. I'll nibble on about anything, but the brand I fall on with shrieks of delight is Lion d'Or.

Lindt dark or all truffle flavors or the milk lindt bar with orange filling.
Also Rittersport both of these options seem to be available at many NYC bodegas.

I, too, am a TJ's chocolate girl. I just love the round fruitiness of it. Every trip I make, I buy two bars of the dark chocolate with raisins and pecans, and break off bits of them for desserts until they run out.
As far as artisan chocolate goes, my absolute favorite, bar none, is from L.A. Burdick. Though, living as I do in the Midwest, the chances I get at it are few and far between.

Hmmm chocolates... Milka, Cadbury Flakes, Galaxy bars, Maltesers, I either stock up when I visit or I have my friends overseas mail them to me. So I am seldom without a chocolate stash. If it is depleted, I head to Cost Plus (Milka, Cadbury, Maltesers), TJ (Ritter Sport, Villiers), Target (Frey, Ritter Sport).
However, my favorite is Ovomaltine ...which I have yet to find ANYWHERE outside of Switzerland (and ebay)....if any one know of a place in the SF bay area or NYC, please let me know! I am down to my last bar!! Horlicks is similar (and I have a small stash from Hong Kong), but not quite the correct thickness.

Lindt Lindor truffles for me - preferably Dark Chocolate, but I like all of the types. I also just found a delicious bar of chocolate - dark chocolate with marzipan filling - yesterday. I believe it's from Ritter.
Marlala at 2:52PM on 06/09/08
I regularly enjoy luxurious nibbles of Lindt 70% cacao dark chocolate. I'm also a marzipan afficiando and buy cheapie German marizpan bars coated in chocolate from my neighbourhood German deli. Green and Black's dark organic chocolate bars are also wonderful and worth the steepish price. Most health food stores have them here in Canada. Let's face it - I love almost any chocolate although I'm not too keen on North American brands. This isn't snobishness but my palate speaking!

For everyday... Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate! It is delicious and smooth, and has that really great coffee-ish backnote in the finish.
It is awesome.
For Cooking -- it's a whole different thing, especially for a special occasion. I have the cookbook "Chocolate Desserts by Pierre Herme", and it taught me so much about using a different chocolate for each dish, almost like pairing a dish with a wine.

Wow...tough question. I really like Israeli Elite brand chocolate. They used to make these chocolate logs that I loved...but now I go for their milk chocolate bars with pop rocks! Yum.
Also, this is random but I had a chocolate the other day from a wedding as a favor. They were in the shape of the capitol building (since the wedding was in DC). The box had one white and one dark, and that dark chocolate was the best I have ever tasted! I'm trying to track down the maker!

Everyday chocolate, huh? Cadbury's, Milka, Lindt, Kinder (so what?:-)), Droste Chocolate Pastilles, Toblerone, Guylian, Côte d'Or...
brooke29 at 3:15PM on 06/09/08
Frantic Foodie - yes! Theo chocolates are AMAZING!!!
Love Cadbury Flake, love dark Mars bars, Jacques Torres chocolate-covered Cheerios (they're healthy, right?).
But really, my favorite is whichever one I have in my hand at any given moment...
CookiePie at 3:53PM on 06/09/08
Hmmm. For milk chocolate, I like Freia firkløver and Milka (the kind with chopped nuts, although in my youth I liked the kind with the biscuit in it). For dark, I like Green and Black's Maya Gold, Cote d'Or with hazelnuts and Scharffen Berger 70%. I also like Anthon Berg marzipans, especially the kind with madeira, which takes me back to my teens.
I don't like Cadbury's anything (I find it greasy and bland), and I also don't like Toblerone, and Hershey's strikes me as quite pointless. I'm not especially fond of Lindt either, except for the kind with the orange peal and almond slivers in. That one is quite nice. My partner maintains that Rittersport is gross, but I like the one with marzipan.

Guittard bittersweet. YUM!
Or Joseph Schmidt. I love the orange truffle, but only for sharing. His truffles are HUGE!
sarahj at 4:55PM on 06/09/08
There's so many go ones, but I really love Jacques Torres chocolate bars.
giordano1956 at 4:59PM on 06/09/08
I too love Theo. Lots of great flavors including coconut curry and chai both of which I love.
Rapunzel is one of my current faves. The nut truffle creme rivals anything that Lindt does and it has the bonus of being Organic and Fairly Traded. Some of the others I've had lately are Grenada, Equal Exchange, Endangered Species, Vintage, Divine, and Shamen. But there's several other really good ones out there. Chocolate is one of those that is rife with child slavery and awful conditions. I actually met a South American farmer who grows coffee and cacao who explained the differences in his life, which are astounding, since joining a fair trade cooperative so I feel so much less guilt if I'm picky about which ones I consume.
Sieseye at 5:30PM on 06/09/08
Really, just gimme anything dark chocolate and I won't be too picky!! (Almost) any chocolate is better than no chocolate :)
luswim06 at 6:55PM on 06/09/08
Organic Dagoba chocolate. They have flavors like chai latte and dark chocolate with almonds and tart dried cranberries and lavender chocolate...it just goes on and on. Beautiful savoring chocolate...just about 1 inch of a bar will satiate me (however, I will finish the bar if n o one is looking). Yum.

Hilary, ditto on Elite :-)

I love Godiva Key Lime Truffels! I love plain Hershey Hugs or Kisses. I love any assorted boxed chocolates.

Chocolove 77% is my favorite, but I also love Michael Cluizel Noir de Cacao when I can get my hands on it, which pretty much requires someone getting it for me. @rosezilla - Dagoba comes in a close third though!
producestories at 11:46PM on 06/09/08
My favorite is the only forgotten (?) piece of chocolate left in the cupboard when I'm going into chocolate withdrawal...
Other than that, gotta admit a certain fondness for Godiva and Ghirardelli's!
bubbamom at 10:57AM on 06/10/08
Vosges. Vosges. Vosges. Especially the Black Pearl bar. The bacon bar is a treat as well.
worldcupfever at 12:50PM on 06/10/08
Don't laugh...Ghirardelli's 60% Cacao Bittersweet Chocolate Chips. I was a consumer product tester for them, and although not a chocoholic, got completely addicted to them for a while. I was supposed to bake things with them but probably half of every package wound up being nibbled on. The shame, the shame.
I get one of those small boxes of Godiva chocolates every couple of years to satisfy my rare chocolate cravings.
