Honkin' Big Beer Can Chicken
I have successfully done the smaller, regular sized beer can chicken. I produced a tender, juicy chicken that tasted like bacon. Naturally I am thrilled. But now I want to try an over stuffer roaster sized bird...6 lb. Is this something that can be done? I think I'll still be able to close the grill. Just don't want to start something that isn't ever going to be finished.

If you can shove a can of Foster's up his carcass, you can make a 6lb chicken. I have done it before, prefer the smaller chicken.

Why not, as long as it fits in your grill? I wouldn't like the bird touching the grill cover - mine is not pretty. Better than roasting it in the oven, by a mile! If using a gas gril, make sure you have plenty of propane. Enjoy!!!

I've done 5 lb chickens, just use a tallboy if the bigger bird doesn't fit over a normal can of beer. Also, the only other thing you have to watch out for is that you cook it long enough so that it's thoroughly done.

It will definitely finish cooking, just be sure to use an instant read thermometer to temp it so you know for sure it's cooked. Also consider resting time. 180°F in the leg ought to do it.

do you need the metal rack thingie that holds the can, or can you just shove the can up and plonk 'er on the grill? I've been wanting to try this for a while...

I always put a piece of onion in the neck. This helps to keep the steam in the bird.

To keep the chicken upright, I buy the disposable aluminum pan they call a casserole. It is about 8 inches accross, round and has high sides that keep the bird from toppling. You might want to try this.

Thanks for all the comments. I didn't use anything but a 12 oz beer can with the smaller chicken. It stood up just fine on its own. I'm thinking a taller can might be in order with the bouncer chicken. I will definitely use the instant read thermometer. Don't like pink chicken. I will put the lemon in neck. Great idea. And I'm telling you, the hickory chips are a must. I'm planning on doing this Sunday. I'll report back.
