it really depends o the kind of headache hun. If its sinus I would try eatting something good and spicy that makes your nose run and incidently that type of food is usually high in vit c which is a natural antihistimine. if its a tension headache I would stay away from anything with caffeine, and try some herbal tea with a little natural honey. Most other kinds of headaches a little caffeine will help your pain reliever of choice work better. In any case good luck sweetie! my thoughts are with you that it dosent last too long!

Aspirin? Excedrin?
Available at most any grocery store, food store or gas station.
3 extra strength excedrin will usually keep my migraines under control.

One of you tells her to stay away from caffeine.
The other one tells her lots of caffeine.
"good luck sweetie" -- "feel better!"
What's WRONG with you peoeple? TAKE SOME ASPIRIN.
God...

I usually have migraine headaches, and yes, I absolutely have to take Excedrin migraine, nothing else (food or drink) helps. In fact, after a certain point, even if I take Excedrin, it may take awfully long for it to work. A cold towel on the forehead is a must. Now, when I have migraines, I get very nauseous and queasy, so I need to eat something carby - like a small bowl of mash (more like a few spoonfuls, really) or even a plain bagel or a roll with butter and salt. This does not alleviate my headache, but it takes care of the nausea, so overall, it does make me feel better. I also drink plenty of water.
I do hope you feel better soon.

I did try the aspirin route. Alas, it did not work.:( I can't take Excedrin-unfortunately, it makes my stomach hurt BADLY. Which stinks because the one time I did take it, the stuff worked. It just seemed to move the pain to my stomach (which was already queasy from the headache).
I am going to try the caffeine suggestion. Diet Coke maybe...Perhaps that would help my stomach being queasy.
@Brooke: uhhh, I hate that headaches/migranes = queasiness. It's like one just isn't enough? Going to try your idea too. Maybe a bagel will help too.

How about sex?
Many experts say sex is good for relieving certain types of headaches.
Plus, it can be fun, assuming nobody gets hurt or is held against their will.
So, do you have anyone to give you the sex?
Maybe we can end this headache thing, right now.
:)

Ah, yes, endorphin release and the gate control theory of pain management.
lemons at 3:31PM on 06/08/08
Hmmm... ok, that might not have sounded right.
It was not meant to be a proposition. I don't want to have sex with you.
I was trying to say -- If you have a loved one... love them.
Or get them... to love you.
:)

Excedrin works for people because it has caffeine, the package that says migraine is the same as the other just repackaged because it's been proven to help migraines. I suffered from migraines for years as a teen ager, after finding out I had high blood pressure in my early 20's and got it under control they went away- thank goodness! So if aspirin bothers your stomach try some soda. P.S. Mt. Dew has more caffeine than cola products.- Good Luck!

Drink the liquid from a can of peas.
(You just gotta believe!)

I get the migraines that wake me up in the middle of the night and ONLY after I have had a hell of a day. What works? Completely unorthodox mix of just about any OTC pain reliever I can get my hands on with a Diet Pepsi Max chaser while laying as motionless as possible with the covers over my head.
Whatev. I get up many hours later feeling like a mother effen champ. Im sure its because the combo of pain killers literally killed all my pain. Then I eat myself stupid because Im usually starving.
ChelleyD01 at 9:41PM on 06/08/08
My dad actually gets migraines and was told that...believe it or not...
...to drink Mountain Dew....and it works....I would have never believed it.

@FastFoodCritic: HILARIOUS! Crackin up about your posts. Head hurt too much yesterday so I took a break from the computer. Next time, I am going to have to try your suggestion. Sounds great.:) Although, I would think the motion would not make me feel better..?
I am feeling much better today, just not 100%. Anything is better than yesterday. May have to get an Iced Coffee today-sticking with the caffeine theme.
Thank you everyone for your input!

I almost forgot...
@srhcb: Ok, so that has to be one of the worst things I have EVER heard. Seriously? Pea Juice. I HATE peas. Maybe would have tried it, but I NEVER have that awful veggie on hand. Interesting though.
Butrflygirly at 8:54AM on 06/09/08
Hey, glad to hear you are feeling a bit better. Thought I might add my two cents in case you get the evil headache again.
"In and out of the shower" usually works for me. I lie in bed until the pain becomes unbearable, then get into a hot shower and let the water run over my face. Then back to bed. Repeat until you feel better or are just totally exhausted from the process that you fall asleep.
Also works with a bath, but somewhat more labor intensive. Just get your face in the water, and things start improving.
And stick to the diet coke. It has some strange curative property.

@Butrflygirly - I'm so pleased to hear you're feeling somewhat better!
brooke29 at 10:48AM on 06/09/08
black licorice helps
Frantic foodie at 12:10PM on 06/09/08
Still feel the need to put in my two cents'.
For me, the cure depends on the type of headache. If it's a sinus headache (pretty common this time of year), then I go with caffeine. I've had doctors agree with me that caffeine is good for sinus headaches. I drink coffee every morning anyway, so I'm really saying more caffeine, caffeine itself is a given in my life. I usually go for the diet coke.
For a tension headache, and this is my favorite, a beer or other drink with alcohol. It makes me happy because it's an actual cure for me (for that type of headache), one drink and the neck/shoulder/head ache is gone. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for any other type of headache. I've tried.
For migraines, when I figure it out, I'll patent it and become rich and headache-free.
blackolive at 12:40PM on 06/09/08
For migraines it's got to be aspirin (3 regular strength ones) and a diet Mountain Dew, followed by lying down/sleeping. For sinus ones, warm compresses to the area that feels under pressure. Pain medication (with or without caffeine) seems to do very little for me with sinus headaches.
Amandarama at 2:27PM on 06/09/08
I visited the doctor last year after I suffered from two or three straight nights of powerful-pounding headaches. He thinks they are migraines, so he prescribed Imitrex. You're supposed to take it at the onset of a headache so it can work. I took one the other night before bed. Woke up the next morning and the headache was gone.
Excedrin has worked in the past, but I hesitate to take it if I want to sleep.
I hope you feel better soon. Bad headaches are horrible.
bster18 at 8:38PM on 06/09/08
Glad you're feeling better! :)
I tend towards something very hot or very cold, not so much to consume but to hold on the aching parts of my skull. I've held a full coffee cup against my eye more times than I can count.
These days though I really do try to get a session in with the Neti Pot. It's unbelievable how much that helps. Just salt and warm water.
However with a true migraine the only thing that works (though I haven't tried the fancy ones that require a doctor/hospital visit -- how would I even get there with the headache?) is a couple vicodin with a bunch of water and a couple hours of sleep.
Then I like soup for the headache hangover.
It's hard to eat with a headache. I think that's why we end up with one when we eat ice cream too fast. Slows us down, makes it last longer.
Sieseye at 8:57PM on 06/09/08
Thank you everyone for your great ideas. They did help. It's lingering, but nothing like it was yesterday. THANK GOD. Had a rough mid term tonight followed by hours of lecture, so it's coming back a little strong. I am thinking headache is related to stress/tension.
@sieseye: OH NO! You said Neti Pot. I make fun of my bf's mom for using that thing. She SWEARS it works. I am MORE than grossed out about the whole thing. Don't think I can ever try it. It reminds me of a scene I saw in a movie (Iron Jawed Angels) and I do not want to feel that. Granted, I would be doing it on my terms and not being force fed, but...Great movie-but that was hard to watch.
Butrflygirly at 10:17PM on 06/09/08
B'Fly,
Well .... you said you were "willing to try anything"?
(It cures hic-cups too!)
srhcb at 10:31PM on 06/09/08
@srhcb: Yes, you are very right. I read your post and almost took back what I said, almost. It hurt so bad, I just may have tried it-and then visited the restroom thereafter. Maybe holding my nose could help?? Peas are just so awful. I can't explain.
Butrflygirly at 10:38PM on 06/09/08
Neti Pot! Neti Pot! Neti Pot! We are the knights who say "Neti Pot!"
:)
I didn't think I could ever do it either but then one desperate week spent with some seriously inflamed sinuses convinced me to finally give it a try and I'm sold. I had a cold recently and before I realized I was sick I thought to myself, "So this is what it is like to die..." and the Neti was very helpful during that week too.
It's use on Oprah (where it is also called a "nose bidet") was demonstrated with an audience member and Doctor Oz (then followed up on another show with some very happy people as it's good not just for sinuses but allergies as well). That was another reason I was finally willing to try it.
It was not anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be. I'm not sure what horrors I was expecting but it's not really uncomfortable at all (as long as the water is the correct temp -- cold is not fun); much nicer than squeezing those icky (and nasty tasting) nose sprays, and the relief after is soooo worth it. It feels free and expansive and light. Wish I'd found my courage so much sooner.
I haven't seen your movie and now it seems even more unlikely... I'm not good on watching those forced things (too much empathy). Plus, I guess I'm swearing by the Neti now too. :)
Sieseye at 12:36AM on 06/10/08
I have chronic sinus/allergy issues and was really hoping the Neti Pot would help. I guess my septum is so deviated that it just isn't physically possible. The salt water goes in, but it doesn't come out from where it's supposed to come out. I've tried several times. I really want it to work. It doesn't. So disappointing.
Amazingly, after failing utterly, I still got my husband to try it while I watched. It was the most entertaining thing I've seen in a long time.
blackolive at 11:48AM on 06/10/08
BANANAS!! I think its the potassium.
embolini9 at 3:28PM on 06/10/08
Sometimes refined sugar can be the source of a headache. I would look up "types of headaches" on Google and find out what kind of headache you're experiencing. That can help you to narrow it down to what will and won't work for you (ie: if it's a tension headache, drinking mountain dew won't help, but if it's a migraine headache then mountain dew might work because of its high caffeine content.)
sharpphoto at 5:51PM on 06/10/08
Oh, and on the subject of the Neti pot... I have one too! Well, I have something called Sinurinse: http://www.amazinghealth.co.uk/sinurinse-nasal-flushing.htm
My boyfriend is a pharmacist who is frequently stuffed up and he swears by it. I finally tried it once and at first it feels like you've just accidentally breathed underwater (that sort of burning nose watery eye thing) but afterwards your head feels so clear!
