Flatiron Wasteland

Does anyone know of any good lunch spots in/near the Flatiron district? Everything seems to be mediocre standard food - pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, standard greasy chinese. I feel like there must be some place nearby that has a good, tasty, unique lunch in the $5-$10 range. (forget shake shack - the burgers are good, but do not justify the wait). So far the best I could come up with is Great Burrito on 23rd, a few street-meat carts that are good, and the long hike to grand sichuan on 9th ave.

can anyone help?

Hardly a wasteland. There's plenty!

Mangia on 23rd Street btw 5th and 6th, for pressed sandwiches, pizzas, salad and other bars
City Bakery on 18th btw 5th and 6th
Sala on 19th btw 5th and 6th for Spanish tapas, good sandwiches
The falafel place (someone here will know the name) near Union Square
The new BBQ place (again, I'm sure someone knows the name) on Park Ave S around 19th
Republic for pan-Asian on Union Sq West

The falafel place is called Maoz and it's the east side of Union Square, near 16th street. It's awesome.

Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop on 5th Ave between 22nd and 23rd is good for an old school sandwich. Not my favorite dumplings, but Rickshaw Dumpling on 23rd and 5th and 6th will do in a pinch.

i second the city bakery rec. i also like tisserie on the corner of 17th and union square west. also, not a lunch spot but if you need some quality cocktails or a fancy-pants grilled cheese (my favorite comes with carmelized pears and truffle oil) to take the edge off after a long day of work, there's tillman's on 25th between fifth and sixth.

Rickshaw Dumpling Bar on W. 23rd near Sixth Ave. Maybe not the most authentic dumplings in the city, but they are tasty, unique, and in your price range!

'wichcraft on 20th between 5th and Broadway is really great - they have sandwiches from $6-$10 and a soup-and-half-sandwich deal for $9 with lots of options. I second City Bakery, though it can be a bit pricey.

The falafel place near Union Square is Rainbow Falafel - and it's terrific!

wildwood bbq on 18th and park is brand new and super yummy. there is goodburger on 17th and broadway, which is a fast food type place but surprisingly very good. chop't the best tossed salad place in nyc is on 16th btwn broadway and 5th and there is always houstons, dos caminos, park avenue bistro and primehouse up on park at like 27th. you really cannot go wrong on park avenue south.

ennju on 17th street between 5th and broadway {right across from tisserie} tastes just like the food in japan, according to my japanese colleagues.

there's also a taqueria on 23rd and sixth that has amazing pork tacos. it's on the southwest corner, third door to the west. it's a pizzeria but if you walk in you'll see everyone eating delicious mexican food.

Tamarind, the Indian restaurant on 22cd near Park, has a lovely Tea Room next door that serves delicious sandwiches like Saag Paneer for around 8 bucks. A little further away is Rice on Lexington and 28th, with rice dishes from a bunch of different cuisines: Lebanese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, French, even American (rice krispie treats). My favorite is the Vegetarian Meatballs on Basmati, about 6 bucks.

Hill Country BBQ on 26th is amazing.

Isn't 'wichcraft around there? 20th and Broadway, I think.

I would also say that a trek over to Lex or Third might be worth it - tons of Indian and Asian places over there. The Bun Xao at L'Annam is really good and super-cheap.

Secret take out menu at Pamplona on 26th and Park. Great value.

Sandwiches at Lamazou. 3rd Avenue and 27th.

Ashby's has the best soups. 22nd Street between 5th and 6th.

Blue Smoke also does take-out. Sandwiches are more like $11 or $12. The burger is huge, though.

Somebody mentioned Hill Country, which is great. R.U.B (Real Urban Barbecue) on 23rd and 7th(?) is pretty good, too.

The Paupered Chef (www.thepauperedchef.com) did a whole week of cheap and tasty lunch spots in the Flat Iron district. Check it out.
