Favorite summer food- now and from childhood?
Yeah, it's 2 am and I have insomnia. Soooo, what better way to kill the time until the tylenol pm kicks in than to mull over summertime? What food is your favorite summertime fare? I have a weakness for tomato sandwiches and freshly picked/ cooked lady peas. No, not together. Although... lol
From childhood my summer must have was sno-kones - there used to be a truck that came through our neighborhood selling the BEST sno-kones. I always got rainbow flavor. Sigh.
Should be fun talking about what we love from summer now v/s when we were kids. ;-P

Now I'm loving cherries, apricots, and nectarines.
As a kid, I also like summer fruit but also ice cream sandwiches, Carvel vanilla soft serve with chocolate sprinkles, and Carvel ice cream cake with pink roses.
HeartofGlass at 7:57AM on 06/08/08
For me, it's all about corn on the cob. It was love at first sight/bite as a kid. I'm lucky enough to live in NJ which has excellent corn in the late summer and it's as fresh as can be... totally summer.
jonfoxx at 8:03AM on 06/08/08
Jon Foxx--I hear you!
Corn on the cob is my FAVORITE! I think I liked it as a kid, but then I got braces and it was corn OFF the cob and I don't think I appreciated it nearly as much. But these days? I will run to the store every day if it means I can have some corn for a summer dinner.
I think my favorite childhood food were those push pops--the frozen ice-sugar Popsicles that were in long thin plastic sleeves and you pushed it up as you ate it. Does anybody else remember/still eat these?!
luswim06 at 8:47AM on 06/08/08
A big ol cone of soft serve ice cream and ice cold sweet watemelon...and pushpops yeah those are awsome I haven't had one of those in years...
Markbb at 9:04AM on 06/08/08
While growing up, definitely shave ice. As a child, I enjoyed rainbow shave ice. Then in high school, I was introduced to shave ice from a Vietnamese shave ice store, and I never looked back. I love my shave ice with lilikoi syrup, taro and condensed milk. Ahh.
I still crave it, but haven't bothered to make it. My awesome shave ice machine broke, and I can't find one that shaves ice as thin as this did. When I visit home, regardless of what time of year actually, I make an effort to get some.
I love watermelon and corn, then and more so now -- not together though.
Cassaendra at 10:33AM on 06/08/08
I agree on tomato sandwiches from childhood, and still. As an adult, Vietnamese chicken salads.
A little off the subject maybe, but I was a child in the forties/fifties in a traditional farm area where dinner was at noon and it was the big meal. On hot summer nights we sometimes had corn flakes (or Cheerios or Wheaties) with milk and peaches for supper. That, too, is still a summer favorite for me.
Blue Iris at 10:58AM on 06/08/08
Corn on the Cob! Can't be beat...Childhood and now.
Can't leave out the summer fruits though. Watermelon, peaches, plums, nectarines...Mmmm. A favorite snack of mine is: slice up a peach put it in a bowl, pour some milk, a little bit of sugar = YUMMY. My mom made it for me as a child and I love it today still. Kinda like peaches and cream.:) But not as bad for you.
Oh yea-soft serve ice cream too. Mmmm
Butrflygirly at 12:05PM on 06/08/08
A perfectly ripe, sweet, juicy peach; a crisp, sweet slice of watermelon; corn on the cob.
And, of course, ice cream!

I grew up in northwestern Ohio, where corn on the cob rules. The corn there has meatier kernels and it isn't as sweet as Jersey corn, and I still prefer that. My family would get 20 ears for two dollars and we'd shuck and boil the corn and eat that with a platter of herbed tomatoes and call it dinner. Come August, I'll be doing that here in Manhattan, thanks to the Union Square Greenmarket.

TOMATOES.
kjgibson at 1:12PM on 06/08/08
When I was a child - cherries and apricots. Fresh peas, eaten straight from the pod. Also, because we usually spent summers at our grandparents', and my Gran was both a fantastic cook and a brilliant baker - all kinds of baked goods:-). Not your usual summer fare, I know, but still. And ice cream, of course - my favourite favour at the time being coffee/mocha.
Come to think of it, I still love all those things (unfortunately, I have to settle for sweet memories of my Gran's cooking and baking). I'm still quite fond of cherries, apricots and fresh peas, although I definitely favour pistachio ice cream these days:-). Oh, and grilled pretty much anything. My favourite summertime dinner is something grilled - shrimp, sausage, burgers, hot dogs - whatever, with either a simple salad of mixed greens, or an Israeli salad.
brooke29 at 1:28PM on 06/08/08
As a kid I loved "hobo stew" a classic for summer camping trips. Potatoes, carrots, celery, peppers, onion, zucchini, corn, etc. all chopped up and thrown on a square of foil, then sprinkled with ketchup, pepper, and beer (I know even as a kid). Obviousy then we threw the foil packets in the embers of the campfire and waited... Loved it then and still do, although now I have a weakness for stone-fruits in salads from the farmer's market!
oregonpinot at 3:26PM on 06/08/08
Hot dogs on the grill.
Good Humor Ice Cream.

I have to agree. I grew up in RI and worked summers at a farm stand and my parents had a garden. I loved and still love fresh corn on the cob. Now, tied with corn on the cob is fresh tomatoes. Yummy!
MeMeg at 8:29PM on 06/08/08
push pops, corn on the cob, and strawberry shortcake.mmmmm
machellebelle at 8:58PM on 06/08/08
We had a large vegetable garden and my favorite summertime eat was fresh lemon cucumbers, peeled and sliced, dunked in a bowl of salted ice water with a splash of cider vinegar, and stashed in the fridge until dinner. Now I also enjoy fresh tomatoes with dinner at my parents' house during summertime visits.
sarahj at 9:03PM on 06/08/08
Watermelon with a teensy bit of salt
Jersey corn, I like it cooked directly on the grill...with some charred kernels, YUMM!!!
A jersey tomato and good buffalo mozzarella sandwich
Orange & white custard from Kohr brothers on the Boardwalk
Ditto a big, fat slice of Boardwalk pizza. (Sunburn required)
Ohh...and the smell of sausage and pepper sandwiches at S"l"easide! :)
sweethunibabi at 10:18PM on 06/08/08
Nothing is more evocative of lazy hot summer days from my childhood than juicy sweet peaches and big tomatoes from our garden (other than knee high athletic socks, short shorts and tube tops). I loved having tomato sandwiches still hot from the sun - I always felt like Harriet the Spy.
Today, I'd say anything grilled. And water ice ... mmmm ... lemon peel ....
onespicymama at 10:47PM on 06/08/08
Ok, so I think corn on the cob is a universal summer treat. We loved OtterPops. The brightly colored, plastic-encased frozen treats. :) I saw a box of 200 at Costco!
bethmorris at 11:01PM on 06/08/08
Corn on the cob
Grilled hotdogs
Tomato salad (like a village greek.. italian style and w/out the cheese)
Strawberries

so from childhood, my summer food of choice--or at least memory--has gotta be those push-pops you buy by the gross(i think) in supermarkets. i don't know what they're called, but they're sold in liquid form in sealed plastic wraps, and are basically just sugar water that's then frozen. it's wholly unfathomable that there's anyone who's not had them, i think(or maybe this is just a southern thing?)
favorite summer food these days is probably iced coffee. the fact that, as a coffee shop employee, i get it for free doesn't hurt either.
rasellers0 at 11:57PM on 06/08/08
Then and now, it has to be corn on the cob. Now with sour cream and chili powder; then with butter and salt.
Then, spent all day up in the cherry tree spitting seeds as far as possible and creating the sublimest of gut aches. Later in the year it was ice cold watermelon and on very special occations, homemade, chunky peach ice cream. Who cared if you dislocated and arm turning the crank?
Now it's fresh peas eaten straight out of the pod, almost black Bing cherries, watermelon with a shake of salt on top, and pulled pork sandwiches.
All-star meal that stands the test of time is a picnic along a refreshing river, a stopover on a Saturday jaunt into nature. Menu; cold fried chicken, mom's recipe potato salad, maybe some chips and a vegetable "tray" and a watermelon that's been cooled in the river's waters. It don't get much better nor more family friendly.

Leaf-lettuce sandwiches. We had a huge garden, and my 3 rows were radishes (nearly instant gratification), carrots, and leaf lettuce. I haunted the lettuce row, and as soon as there was enough, plucked it, washed it (sort of) and produced my favorite early/late summer treat: piles of fresh lettuce leaves & mayo on hard- crusted Italian bread. Slippery and sublime. Best eaten in the garden. That my sister thought them gross enhanced their appeal.
erialc at 8:46AM on 06/09/08
My favorite summer foods....now & then....watermelon, sweet corn, tomatoes.....favorite meal....grilled steak - very rare, corn on the cob, and salt spuds w/lots of butter....yum!
Ice cream is a favorite no matter what time of year!
I think you all are talking about freezie pops...right...the plastic tubes filled w/liquid that you pop into the freezer.
mepolo at 8:47AM on 06/09/08
Now-Gazpacho made from all local produce. I make it by the gallon with whatever the farmer's market has available. Love, love, love it.
Then-Blueberries. My mother's family was from the 'Fruit Belt of Michigan' and every summer we'd get a huge box of blueberries delivered to our house sent by one of my aunts. It seemed like a huge extravagance at the time (late 60s) to get blueberries in the mail. My sisters and I would wait for the postman every day and fight over who got to bring the box into the house.
Rottenmom at 8:56AM on 06/09/08
Now that I am able to think...Here's a few other faves:
Thrasher's Fries!! (turn them into Beach Fries!)
Kohr Brothers Custard (amen, sweethuni)
Strawberry Shortcake
Potato Salad
Anything Grilled
Butrflygirly at 9:02AM on 06/09/08
Peaches and strawberries have always been a favorite. Then, as in now, I eat unreasonable amounts of peaches and sometimes get tummyaches. As a kid, my favorite frozen treat was probably frozen yogurt (not this "healthy" yogurt-tasting kind, but the super-sweet soft-serve kind, most likely chocolate, with sprinkles and m&ms and things). I don't do the sweets anymore, but still love fruit - and cherries vie with strawberries as my favorite. I could eat a pound a day. I can't wait 'til they show up at the market!
producestories at 9:15AM on 06/09/08
Then and now: freeze pops, fresh brewed iced tea, grilled hot dogs and tuna mac salad, any type of pasta salad, vanilla cone with chocolate sprinkles from the Tastee Freez.
When I was a kid, I always hated that creamy cucumber dill salad, but I had some yesterday, and I've seen the light.
Kerosena at 10:29AM on 06/09/08
My grandmother always made ice cream with the fresh peaches. In the old ice-cream maker with the rock salt and the wooden sides that one had to crank until one had an embollism. But there really is no other ice cream that touches Nana's fresh peach ice cream.
rosezilla at 11:34AM on 06/09/08
Coleslaw w/ hamburgers on the grill. It's also the beginning of strawberry season here right now, very nostalgic :)
Nowadays, it's all about the tomatoes and lobster salad.
liwinegirl at 11:58AM on 06/09/08
Summer meals were often a delicious tomato salad (sliced tomatoes topped with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and salt/pepper) with sweet corn cobs on the side. I still am a huge fan of tomato salad, but now I shell out big bucks to get heirloom tomatoes :-)
We also made tomato sandwiches - slice of american, slice of tomato and mayo - but I don't eat those much at all anymore, since I don't buy processed cheese like that.
Marlala at 2:55PM on 06/09/08
Juicy watermelon! I went to Blues Fest in Chicago yesterday and the Dominick's booth was serving the biggest slices of watermelon ever...it was so refreshing.

As a kid, summer meant hamburgers on the grill with fresh tomatoes from the garden, watermelon, corn on the cob, and Lucky Charms when we went camping. But the absolute best were the cherry tomatoes, plucked right from the vine and rinsed with the hose.
Tomatoes are still pretty high on the summer list as an adult!
LizNYC at 3:12PM on 06/09/08
Watermelons and cherries - i loved visiting my godmother in NYC and we would get all the fruits that were difficult to get here in PR back in the 70's and 80's and my dad would buy us tons of cherries, peaches, strawberries that tasted way better than the ones we got here...
and I always loved a cup of Mr Softee vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup....
MadelynRodriguez at 3:17PM on 06/09/08
When I was a kid, it was all about tomato sandwiches. I loved those things. Watermelon (preferably eaten while swimming at the beach) was a close second.
As an adult, I still love tomato sandwiches and watermelon, but summer has instead become all about the peaches. I love fresh peaches, and try to eat my fill of them every summer. I never even come close.
jenilowrance at 3:18PM on 06/09/08
One more: the combination of wonderful smells at the town pool- chlorine, french fries, ketchup, freshly mowed grass and coppertone.
I realize this sounds gross, but it's actually a very nice combination.
Of course, the only things actually being eaten were the french fries and ketchup:)
Kerosena at 3:27PM on 06/09/08
Cherries, nectarines, all kinds of berries, fresh corn on the cob, tomatoes. Uncle Louie G's Italian ices!
CookiePie at 3:48PM on 06/09/08
Tomato sandwiches; fried okra, creamed corn and tomatoes; damson pie; fried green tomatoes and peach ice cream.
Babzee at 4:13PM on 06/09/08
When it was too hot to cook inside, my aunt (originally from Alabama) would put the camp stove out on the picnic table under the big tree and deeo fry the fish that had been caught in May and June, then filleted and frozen. She would make hushpuppies with buttermilk and onions in them that I loved and that I still make to this day.
Also, ice cream floats made with vanilla ice cream and root beer or Vernors Ginger Soda (I think Vernors is regional so those of you not from the midwest may not know what it is.)
robincat at 4:17PM on 06/09/08
Robincat, I'm in Southwestern Ontario; we had Vernors as the factory was very close. Vernors reminds me of Grandma's house. It doesn't taste the same anymore.
When I was a kid my faves were fresh corn from my uncle's farm; hot dogs, grape popsicles and chocolate soft serve cones.
Now I still love fresh local corn, green beans, strawberries, peppers (especially grilled) and good grilled steak. I also still love chocolate soft serve.
blush at 4:34PM on 06/09/08
Definitely Rita's Water Ice or Vanilla cone from the Mr. Softee truck w/ rainbow jimmies, cherries and of course jumbo Freeze pops! I think I'm going to serve freeze pops at my 4th of July cook-out!
kandecia at 8:00PM on 06/09/08
Ice cream from my childhood and nowadays, it's tomatoes.
rosielucchesini at 8:11PM on 06/09/08
My current fave is "Tomayo" sandwiches. I ate those for every meal two weeks straight last year. But I go through the summer according to what's in season; the loss of one food ending mitigated by the arrival of another. The strawberries are now coming in so I'll be eating those en masse until the blueberries and cherries (I eat both like candy or chips, in a bowl all day long as much as I want), then zucchini, fresh cranberry beans, and tomatoes. One of the things I just discovered and love is Spring Green Garlic. I've been eating the green tops raw with a sprinkle of good salt. I've also been itching for my tomatillo chili (corn, peppers, cranberry beans, toms) but that's not till August (not long now). I also love sticks of cucumber, watermelon, jicama, with a sprinkle of hot chile powder or a diced watermelon salad with mint, lime and onions (I don't know why but it works).
When I was a kid there was a restaurant down the street that made its own ice cream (I so miss that kind of treasure) and had several unique flavors. My choice was always a double scoop of cantaloupe and black licorice (I don't know why but it worked too).
Sieseye at 9:15PM on 06/09/08
Ice cream bar from the Good Humor man and then seeing the riddle revealed on the wooden stick!
Nowadays it is still ice cream but also gazpacho and fresh corn on the cob.
amosbkln at 1:03PM on 06/10/08
THEN: S'mores and roasted bananas filled with chocolate chips and marshmallows - Girl Scout inspired.
NOW: White corn on the cob, beefsteak tomatoes, peaches and frozen custard (Hank's at Conneaut Lake - YUM!).
Josdean at 2:17PM on 06/10/08
I Agree entirely; sbelle:
- toasted tomato sandwiches (vine ripe of course)
- fresh picked peas
...both of them bring back childhood summertime memories;
But I also find the flavours/aromas of BBQ pork to remind me of childhood, corn on the cob, Bratwurst (the real white ones) with hot german mustard and curry ketchup, and the smell of smoked salmon/trout is a reminder too; my papa used to smoke fish in the backyard in the summer...MMMMMmmm....
hungrychristel at 2:22PM on 06/10/08
My favourite meal that my Gran'mere made for me as a quickie lunch was a cucumber sandwich sprinkled with salt and pepper on buttered wholewheat bread accompanied by a glass of cold (diary not Nestles Quik) chocolate milk. I ate this on the hot back porch steps next to the hollyhocks. This is a memory 'set in crystal' and I relish that meal as I think about it now.
Raki5 at 2:25PM on 06/10/08
Halo-halo, a Filipino shaved ice dessert! And my dad's way-too-blackened BBQed hot dogs. I think that's also a Filipino thing . . .
OneWallKitchen at 5:12PM on 06/10/08
Fresh cherries, watermelon, popsicles...then and now.
Remember those frozen cream pies made by companies like Pet Ritz, etc.? They had a graham crust, a creamy filling and some type of whippy topping? I absolutely loved when my mom would pull one of those out of the freezer on a hot summer day to thaw for dessert. I was happiest when it was still mostly frozen. It's been years since I had a slice and I doubt that I'd still like them, but as a kid, I was in seventh heaven on pie days. It didn't matter if it was lemon, banana, coconut or chocolate. I did not discriminate. :)
holdthemayo at 6:19PM on 06/10/08
Fresh fruits and veggies in season, grilled anything, especially chicken on the spit.
What I wouldn't give for a dinner of that crispy, juicy chicken that smelled so good, huge slices of ripe beefsteak tomatoes from our garden, just picked corn on the cob dripping in butter, cucumber salad with onions, homemade bread, homemade lemonade and strawberry shortcake with whipped cream. Then and now.
The Good Humor man made no money in my NJ neighborhood. O'Boyles had fresh dipped ice cream cones, banana splits, milkshakes, sundaes - all made to order. They came every summer evening and we saved our allowance and did our fair share of begging, but my father loved ice cream, so we were indulged quite often. I was an adult before I tasted any ice cream on a stick, but I did like the ice cream sandwiches in the high school cafeteria.
PerkyMac at 6:39PM on 06/10/08
From my hot and steamy St. Louis childhood summers:
barbecued ribs, made in the old stone grill in our back yard
watermelon
Corn on the cob
tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes...
"Bomb pops" from the ice cream man
and frozen custard from Ted Drewes! (Preferably a hot fudge sundae, jumbo size!).
Pfossil at 12:54PM on 06/14/08
The memories of hand cranking ice ceam in my grandparents' back yard flood over me. The "ice cream" sold in stores today is no comparison. My favorite was fresh peach. Everyone raves over Georgia peaches; but growing up in central Alabama, you can't get any better than Chilton county peaches.
