Father's Day Grill Menu?

Fathers' Day is coming up, we're having a pool party (or, since we're in New England, a "cook out".) I'll probably serve hamburgers and hotdogs with some kabobs and a few salads ... nothing too fancy. Anyone else cooking for Dad? What's on your menu?

I can't decide! We just got a new grill and I want to cook everything. If we get enough trial runs in on simple stuff to test it out, I might do a butterflied leg of lamb...either with red curry paste or a spinach/feta stuffing. Hard to decide...

I think I will be making this jicama, shrimp and black bean salad because I love it so much. And there will be grilled meat as usual.

Father's Day here for me is sons-in-law and for the grand-kids, their fathers. We're having ham (grilled or ovened - depending on the weather), baked beans and potato salad, biscuits for those grand kids that want a sandwich, and cupcakes. My youngest daughter and two of my eleven assorted grands will be visiting from Tampa so it's sort of a family reunion also ... and should I mention the three grand-dogs? : )
SSMom I'm in Foxborough!

I'm cooking for the FIL, and so far, it looks like pizzas on the grill if its hot, and pizzas in the oven if its cool or rainy. The only undecided part is whether it'll be "make your own" pizzas or whether I'll make them to order or make a variety. Since MIL and FIL are picky eaters, the "make you own" would solve that problem nicely, and I think it would be fun, but MIL thinks of cooking as a form of torture, so I don't know if she'd actually like the idea of assembling her own pie. I dunno. I'll play it by ear.

But it will be pizza, a green salad with choice of dressings, and ice cream for dessert. Maybe some fresh fruit, depending on what looks good when I go shopping.

Perhaps a bit off topic (and sour grapes) but in my family we're "expected" to go all out for Mother's Day with flowers, candy, a nice restaurant or at least a yeoman's effort at cooking your best meal; after a strawberry-waffle breakfast in bed... You're getting the picture, right?
Explain to me why on Father's Day your talking about hamburgers, hot dogs and "if you're hungry, go make yourself a pizza"? I'll avoid getting catty and not suggest a quiche to go with that jicama salad and cupcakes. Maybe you and the grandkids are okay with all that but how about throwing a thick rib steak on the fire for the father in your life?
Forgive me and don't hate me for the rant; for 36 years, I have shared Father's Day with my first born's birthday. Pales in comparison...

czken - I understand your frustatration. I'm a mom, but I have two main men in my life who fulfill father roles - one is my ex-husband, the father of my only child, and the other is my fiance, father of my four step-kids. The first year I was with my soon to be second husband, I asked his kids what we should make dad for Father's Day (they had been very helpful wrt his birthday - suggested salmon, black eyed peas, and a favourite veggie, etc). This time they looked blankly at me - well, uh, how about bbqed burgers? I suggested we might be able to do a bit better than that, since he had treated me to flowers and a lovely dinner for Mother's Day.

Never even crossed their minds - and these are good kids with a fantastic dad. It wasn't them just being pukes.... (grin)....Maybe this is a cultural thing? A function of it being June so everyone has cookout on the brain? Not sure.....

This year, it's steak on the barbie, shrimp skewers, chef salad (his favourite), and cheesecake for dessert!

Czken - I think one of the differences between Mother's Day and Father's Day is that people seem to treat Mother's Day as more of an opportunity to pamper and treat their moms with 5-course meals and elaborate brunches, whereas Father's Day is more of a bonding-with-pop day, spent perfectly outside on the grill or around a picnic table. If someone wants quiche or cupcakes or dogs for FD, bless 'em. Heck, I'm making bluegill for my grandfather and salmon for my dad because that's what they love. It's not fancy, it's not the world's best meal, but it's a treat for me to make a meal they'll be happy with.

Yes I am cooking for father's day, and for the record, I am the father I am cooking for. I'm going to BBQ a couple of nice steaks (rib steaks or T-bones) while the wife cooks the stuff on the stove, maybe some sort of dessert. My family asked me what I wanted for Father's day. I gave them a simple list. Wake up to clean house (I work till 2 am, so I don't get up till 11:00) go for a walk and eat lunch. Come home, relax, get some steaks ready, I'm going to BBQ while the wife cooks the inside stuff have a bottle of wine, and a relaxing evening.

I think that Father's Day (and Mother's Day) is about doing what your F/M wants and enjoys. For Mother's that may sterotypically be the extravagant brunch and pampering, but is that really what Father's sterotypically want? No, in my world the Fathers want to go play golf, relax outside, have a cocktail or a beer and do a little BBQing. My father LOVES to cook and for Father's Day he has all 6 kids and their familes over and cooks for us, because it is what he enjoys and wants to do. Of course we all enjoy being there and together too. We have tried to offer to cook or go somewhere else, but that not what he wants....
Czken-maybe speaking with your children about what you what and desire on Father's day would lead to a more enjoyable day for you.
Happy Father's Day all!!
