Eats in Downtown Atlanta?
Calling all eaters in the Atlanta area (or anyone, really, who knows their way around the place) : Can you direct me to some good eats in the downtown neighborhood of Atlanta? I say downtown because I'll leaving tuesday and staying for a week for a conference and I'm not sure how much free time I'll get to peruse my eating obsessions. So somewhere in the neighborhood (or somewhere walkable) would be great. :)
Pricewise, preferably something not super high end, but it all depends on what you guys come up with!
If you tell me about a place with amazing bread, you get brownie points...

I lived in Atlanta for ~10 years and 2 of the places I miss are: Mary Mac's Tea Room and The Flying Biscuit Cafe. They aren't downtown, but should be easy to get to from where you're staying.

The Varsity

The Varsity is awful! Definitely a tourist trap to be avoided at all costs.

Don't send them to the Varsity. At least not without a warning.
Sadly, "downtown" Atlanta still leaves a lot to be desired, although when I left a year ago, some places were springing up in the Aquarium/Philips Arena area. I've heard Thrive is good -- a bit clubby later in the week. And the Busy Bee Cafe near Clark Atlanta University is good for soul/southern food.
If you can take a cab, or Marta, midtown has some great restaurants -- Ecco, Trois, the Flying Biscuit. Also, Sotto Sotto in Little 5 Points is just a cab ride away, as is Shaun's restaurant in Inman Park. Also in that area is Wisteria - one of my all-time favorites.
Buckhead is also home to a ton of restaurants, both good and bad. If you're a Top Chef fan, Richard Blais' new restaurant, Home, is in Buckhead.

If you get out for lunch, try grab a pizza slice from Rosa's. Having moved from New York, this is actually a comparable slice from what you’d find in nyc. For dinner, you may want to consider FAB up Peachtree St., which is a pretty good French brasserie. If you are able to leave downtown, I would highly suggest that you do so. Atlanta gets a lot more exciting food wise outside of that zone. For options in other parts of town, you may want to check out my blog at www.livetonibble.blogspot.com. Enjoy Atlanta!

Definitely The Flying Biscuit. My sister lives in Atlanta and that was the one place she made us go when we visited her a few years ago.

I can't stand Flying Biscuit, The Varsity, or Mary Mac's. They are all touristy. I agree that Busy Bee is the place to go for soul food. (Fried chicken there is a must.) I would recommend you check out www.yelp.com/atlanta and do a little research. That way you can see what all of us think about places in downtown, and read more detailed reviews of places, before you commit.

I agree with "I can't stand Flying Biscuit, The Varsity, or Mary Mac's."
Fritti is a must
