Never been there but I do see SLC questions on the Southwest section of chowhound.com.

I recommend the Vienna Bistro, great Austrian food a decent prices. My sister and I eat lunch there on days we go up to shop at the Gateway.

I also recommend the Lion House, next to Temple Square, because of the pies and cakes, and the servers in period costume.

Many of the upscale restaurants require you to purchase a "membership" due to their liquor laws. When we lived there, our favorites were the Oyster Bar and the New Yorker. They are connected, literally. The Oyster Bar make an awesome shrimp bisque with tons of whole shrimp. Delicious! The brewpubs downtown are excellent as well. Red Rock and Squatters in particular. For Italian, we like Fresco and Tuscany. Tuscany is in Holladay about 15 minutes from SLC. Cafe Trang for Vietnamese. If for any reason you are going to visit Park City, Grappa is our favorite. Zoom is up there as is Chimaya. Have a great visit!

We had a surprisingly delicious and mostly authentic Mexican meal at Red Iguana. I particularly recommend the chicken mole.

Thank you all--good to know. I just heard that you can get a decent drink too although I hear it's a 1 ounce pour and no doubles allowed. High-end wine seems to be the remedy for that.

Indeed, but you must finish the one you are drinking before another is placed on the table. (Unless you are dining in a private club restaurant).
