Cookbook recommendation

I'm looking for a good cookbook with traditional French recipes. Does anyone have a favorite?

Anything by Julia Child.

I always suggest going to your local library for cookbooks, there is such a variety, you can usually reserve books if not in stock, and you learn what you like and want to buy.

There is always the grand dame - Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child et al. It is some what dated but hey! it's Julia!

I don't know which are still in print but anything by Madeline Kamman -- Madeline Cooks, The Making of a Cook or When French Women Cook.

Without question, anything by Julia.

Well, I figured Julia, but I was hoping for a specific title recommendation. I'll check out Mastering the Art of French Cooking, thanks. Anything else?

Anthony Bourdain Les Halles Cookbook

For the basics, I highly recommend Alice Waters: The Art of Simple Food

Jaques Pepin is also a favorite of mine...I loved the shows with him and Julia

check out Julia Child's "Kitchen Wisdom". it's kind of a condensed version of the "Mastering" book. i love it.

also, look for Patricia Wells books. she has various French ones, like Bistro cooking and Provencal.

But i'd definitely consult your local library first before making any purchases.

have fun!

i don't know if it's still in print, but the gastronomy of france by raymond olivier is a great resource.

I agree with Mastering The Art of French Cooking, I like Volume 2.

I love Julia Child's videos as well, the clip above is from the French Chef, those dvds are available, as well as Kitchen Wisdom. I get them from the library and can watch them over and over she is is not only so knowledgable, but entertaining. And unlike most of today's food shows, she has no problem making mistakes and laughing at herself.

I sure do miss her, and hope Meryl Streep does her justice!

For a fresh twist on classic French recipes, try www.FrenchRevolutionFood.com. The recipes at the bottom of the site function as a kind of online cookbook.

I have a lot of French cookbooks. I have turned to these two more than any of the others.

Julia Child's The Way to Cook

Anne Willan's La Varenne Pratique

Happy browsing!

The Silver Spoon is brilliant - straight forward and covers most fresh (main) ingredients you could probably think of!
