Big Apple BBQ Thoughts?

Did anyone else go to the Big Apple BBQ this weekend? It was ridiculously hot on Saturday, but I found myself there for about 4 hours, eating BBQ, drinking great beer, snagging a bite of an out-of-town friend's Shake Shack, and even catching Ed's BBQ talk. I felt like I was at a Disney World for BBQ! As per Ed's recommendation, I got Ed Mitchell's whole hog, which I wished had more crispy bits that would have reminded me that I was eating the whole pig! I had some of City Grocery's smoked crawfish and okra hushpuppies, washed down with Rogue's Dead Guy Gale, which just put me over for the top. Hours later, only a soft couch and the AC on full blast could bring me back to full consciousness.

Anyone else go to the festival? What did you eat?

Ed Mitchell's Whole Hog was the best thing all weekend. I had a few crispy bits in my sandwich, but when I ask for more cracklin's they said it was for VIPs only. Even still, that whole hog was tops.

I would have loved to have tried some of Salt Lick's brisket, but there was no way that I was going to wait in that line. Went to Wilson's from Fairfield, CT instead. Big disappointment. The brisket "slices" were in all different shapes and forms and they were extremely tough to eat. I gnawed at one huge chunk of a slice for 5 minutes before giving up and spitting it out. They had a nice smoke ring, but I couldn't taste any smoke or even any rub for that matter.

Salt Lick's brisket was amazing - I was lucky enough to get all 2nd cut on my sandwich - and so were their sausages.

Ed Mitchell's shoulder was delicious but it was chopped too finely. I'm very picky about texture in my Q and I much prefer larger shreds that require some chewing.

A note to the organizers for next year: It's great to have Snapple as a sponsor, but each vendor really needs to be able to offer plain water. The Snapple antioxidant stuff didn't cut it. (Although at one point, a guy on stage was flacking it, and said, "It's better than water because it can hydrate you!" Duh.)

- ed mitchell's was good but big bob gibson's was even better. whole hog was a much lighter flavor (though pleasantly tangy) than bbg's robust shoulder.

- salt lick was nothing special--i've had it two years in a row and it's not worth the wait. according to others, it's much better at their restaurant in TX. i'd recommend skipping the line and getting moist brisket at hill country another day.

- cecil's ribs from LA were impressive though--very tasty (a bit overseasoned) but excellent along with the sausage and the tangy salad side.

- city grocery's hush puppies were great. freshly fried and tasty--the only downside was that there was very little crawfish in the batter.

- mike mill's 17th st/Memphis Championship BBQ ribs were amazing as usual. he's called the "Legend" for a reason!

- desserts: blue smoke's pbj cupcake was even more decadent than it sounded (in a good way) while the brownie was nothing special. wildwood's bannana pudding was enjoyable and the smores was okay.

I was lucky enough to accompany my husband, one of the Serious Eats prizewinners, on Ed Levine's tour of the festivities. Hoo boy, can't remember the last time I ate 4 lunches in one day...I wrote it up on my blog, so for details and pics take a look here:

i was sad that the crawfish were in the hush puppy batter and not by themselves. i really wanted to eat crawfish! i had a s'more that was delicious - crusted with nuts, so tasty.

i'm from north alabama and now live in nyc and the one thing i miss above all other southern things is bbq! as soon as i heard big bob gibson's was going to be in nyc i almost died and went to heaven. i've eaten their bbq since i was a child and it might be the best on the planet. waiting in line in the 90+ degreee weather and introducing my friend from Philly to her first southern bbq sandwich was totally worth it. i wish i had a bottomless pit for a stomach so i could have tried all of the vendors. the coke float i had for dessert hit the spot.
