A toaster oven that can bake?
My oven is horrible--the top burners work fine, but I'm worried that using the main oven is dangerous. However, I can't afford a new oven right now, so I was considering buying a toaster oven that could bake--cookies, small cakes--and it wouldn't go to waste when I do get a new oven.
What brands are there that can bake things, as opposed to reheat pizza and toast large bagels?

They call them counter top convection ovens. The wolfgang puck one sells out on HSN everytime they have it on. I don't have one but they review it on the website. There are lots of brands.

I have the Cuisinart Convection Oven and it is wonderful! It bakes small pizzas as well as cookies, casseroles, and anything that fits in it!
It also functions great as a toaster.
I found it at BJ's Warehouse store for $89 on sale. I have used it for many years and have always been thrilled with it.

I'm making cornbread in my general electric currently. I love my convection oven!

I have the same one as @cajunan. I do not use my regular oven becaue I do not bake (anything). Come to think of it, I do not bake it the Cuisinart either. Makes a good bagel though.

My sense is that for the $150 you're being urged to spend on a countertop range, you could perhaps get your regular oven fixed by a qualified repairman. You could then do your baking, including a holiday turkey, and dodge the price of the countertop model PLUS the price of eventually replacing your major model which could run several hundred dollars more. In the end, you wouldn't need either because with the money you'd save, you'd be on an all-you-can-eat cruise off Jamaica. Just a thought...

Sadly, czken, I need a new oven, not just a repair--I expected someone would give me such advice, though, but thanks!
The convection idea is attractive because even if I get a great oven eventually, the convection/toaster oven can be used for small batch baking, summer days when I don't want to heat up the house, and heating sides when using the oven for other stuff.
Thanks for all the suggestions--I am taking note, and if people have more of them, or toaster ovens to avoid, tell me as well! :)

I recently purchased a convection toaster oven at Kohl's and it was under $40. I haven't baked anything in it yet, so I can't vouch for performance. If you're looking for an inexpensive option, look for the Bella Kitchen pizza/toaster/convection oven.

I use a convection "toaster" oven every day for almost everything. I, mostly, cook for one and it's a good energy saver as well as on the counter, it's very accessible.
Mine is a DeLonghi and was worth every penny. My regular oven is great for pan storage and only is used on occasions.

i use a Black and Decker Toaster Oven for the longest time now... I make almost anything in it - toast bread, english muffins, bagels, make pita pizzas, bake breadsticks, bake pastas and lasagnas, bake casseroles and pastelones, even roast vegetables and even fruits too... you name it...
I even went out and bought a set of pyrex that would all fit into teh oven to expand on the possibilities... when this one gives out, I want a model that has a broiler... I already saw it at KMart.

i just posted about this - Eric Ripert's new website and he talks about cooking in a toaster oven! so it seems like yes, it is a good idea

Me and Eric Ripert on the same culinary wavelength, I can't believe it :p Especially after posting some of my favorite childhood meals this week.
This weekend I will go with this great list to some local stores to check out the models in person!

I love toaster ovens! I do not have a microwave (actually I have a microwave but it is in the back closet covered with 'stuff'), I prefer a toaster oven. Funny, the one thing that most toaster ovens don't seem to do well is make toast! Except for the latest one I have. It is a Black and Decker and I bought it at a Kohl's after Xmas sale for around $20. I am assuming that you do not want to spend $50+ so look at discount places like Marshall's, Kohl's, Target, etc. The one thing to remember about toaster ovens, you will find that when baking in them (even frozen meals), you may have to lower the temperature by about 25 degrees than what the recipe/directions say. Play around with the temps, and you will find what is right for the unit you buy. I also recommend getting accessories made for toaster ovens (pans, etc.). I found a set some at Bed Bath and Beyond that I like. However, beware, I spent more for the set than I did for the oven! Good Luck!!

Oh - I forgot to add; I do not know what type of oven you are eventually looking for (high-end Wolfe or basic workhorse Maytag or Kenmore), but I bought a new, electric Maytag Accubake range that I absolutely LOVE at Lowe's last year. It was 'damaged' which meant it had a small scratch on the side of the cooktop (the part that is hidden between the counters). Bottom line, I bought a range that sold as 'perfect' for $700 at most stores for $300. I did spend the extra $50 to have them install the new stove and haul away the old.

I second cajunnan...I have a Cuisinart and have not turned on my "regular" oven for 2 years.
It is a joy to use and easy to clean!! I have done everything in it from toast to full chickens.
