White Asparagus?
Watching Tony Bourdain in Germany this weekend. It seems that the warm weather dish is definitely white asparagus. Does it grow here? I'd LOVE to try it.

Yes it does, I've had it a million times. It tastes the same as green asparagus, it has been grown in the dark basically - no sun = no green

i heart white asparagus! it's so yummy and i think it's the same price as regular asparagus at the grocery store (at least when i've seen it at the one by me)

White asparagus is way too phallic for me!

Yummy.
Like the slight bitterness of the green better, but still good. Almost the same.
Just buried under the soil (like white celery) to grow.
I think (like white celery) it is grown for the look more than the taste.
Still yummy!

I've found it to be cheaper and just as tasty.

How do you all prepare it? Cooked? Raw in a salad?

the same way as any other asparagus. Here in St Louis, I'm seeing it in restaurants a lot, because over on the Illinois side of the river they grow some.

White asparagus (if you can find it) tend to be more expensive then the green in California. It's the opposite in Germany.
White asparagus is great in soup (Spargelcremesuppe) or boiled, served with butter. They taste quite different from the green (IMHO), it's also much more tender.
I usually go to Germany in the spring, just in time for asparagus season. Restaurants have special asparagus menus when it's in season. Most german families own a special asparagus pot. And at a mall in Hamburg, there was a big machine that peels the asparagus for you. I am not sure how it worked, if you buy the asparagus from the guy with the machine, or bring your own and pay him run it through the machine.

I always find white asparagus to be a bit tough.

Is it the same nutritionally? (I have no idea how nutritious asparagus is).

I love asparagus, but the white version just doesn't do it for me...it doesn't seem to taste like anything. Maybe I just like a more bitter green flavor, but that yummy asparagus-y thang just isn't there with the white stuff. Reminds me more of a softer, blander carrot than anything. Pretty, though...too bad I like to eat my food instead of look at it.
