What's your favorite thing in a hot dog bun?

Hot dog buns aren't just for hot dogs. Sure, I grilled up 42 el cheapo hot dogs yesterday afternoon and the neighborhood teens finished 'em off. But besides a hot dog, the craving could be a beer brat, a Tony Packo's Hungarian, a simple hot dog w/ kraut, some lobster salad, meatballs with sauce ... the possibilities are endless. So ... what's your pleasure?

A brat, for sure. Or grilled kielbasa with Dijon mustard.

Hot Italian Sausage. Lots of flavor and a twist on the usual Hebrew National.

As a born and bred New Englander, it would have to be a lobster roll for me!

@izatryt -- Oh, I agree. Lobster rolls are the one thing I miss the most now that I am vegetarian. Only someone from New England could possibly understand just how much....

I'm going to spend the rest of the day trying NOT to think about Lobster rolls now. LOL!

I have some lobster left over from yesterday : ) and I'm having a lobster roll for lunch.

A chili half-smoke with mustard and onions from Ben's Chili Bowl *drooooooool*

I'm w/ride&cook....a nice, juicy brat w/chili sauce. (not chili dog sauce, but the tomato based relish w/peppers & onions in it...yum!)

Since you've opened it to aaaanything...spending each summer on vacation in San Francisco I loved the crab sandwiches served in a hot dog bun that I got at one of the piers. Pure crab meat and nothing else to tarnish the flavor. No lettuce, no tomato, no mayo, just me, the crab, and the bun. Half way through, I'd just eat the crab and toss the bun.

I have a cropped 3' x 4' photograph of me as a kid eating one because the sheer joy expressed on my face when I was eating it. Yes, that's feet not inches.

Ever since I discovered the wonder that is lobster roll, I want nothing else in that hot dog bun. That said, I'd sure go for that sandwich Cassaendra described!

(starting chant) Lobster Roll! Lobster Roll!

Oh my god, I'm missing one of my best friend's wedding this weekend. It's in Boston. I feel bad about the wedding, but I'm even sadder that I won't be able to drive up the coast and eat a few lobster rolls.

Johnville Brat with kraut, dijon mustard and a touch of sweet pickle relish.

@Cassaendra, yes anything. I want to see how creative some of these folks really are!

The pic sounds cool, kinda like your own subway ad. ;-)

After the lobster roll......a Rutt's Hut deep-fried hot dog, Clifton N.J. slathered with their home-made relish!!

I'm a big italian sausage/peppers and onions sandwich fan. Carnival food. Mm. I'm a blasphemous New Englander because I HATE LOBSTER and subsequently, lobster rolls. Shocking, I know.

Actually tuna salad is really good on hot dog buns.

Is it just me or does this question sound kind of dirty? ;)

I am traditional in a veggie way...

A nice grilled veggie hot dog with ketchup and whole grain mustard on a sprouted wheat organic bun and the bun slathered with lots of vegenaise egg-less mayo. Mmmmm...

home made garlic jalapeno smoked sausage, spicy brown mustard an a ice cold brewski

@Brownie - Lobster Rolls are the primary reason I could never become a vegetarian. ;-O

Is it just me or are hot dog buns kind of boring? Although I heard Nathan's having a 'not dogs' promotion or something for hot dog sandwiches that weren't hot dogs on buns--mayo-y stuff like fish and chicken salads I think.

I think the only thing I have had other than a dog on a bun is just mustard & relish when there were no veggie dogs!

Not much boring about a grilled dog laid steaming hot onto a fresh bun and loaded with mustard, catsup and relish. Been a long time since I've had one like that, or even a good old chile dog, for that matter, with chopped onions and grated cheddar cheese. Heartburn city, but worth it!

Robin Bellinger posted about a peanut butter and honey sandwich made with a hot dog bun with a banana in place of the hot dog. Sounds delicious to me...I plan on making one just as soon as I get out of this darn airport!

-hot dog(my current brand is Kayem natural casing) w/ just mustard
-1/2 (lengthwise) of an Old Neighborhood chorizo roasted w/ onions topped w/ ketchup
-hot buttered lobster roll from Neptune in Boston's North End

more:
-thinly sliced leftover roastbeef w/ Hunter's cheddar & horseradish
-Mrs. Pauls BBQ ( some weird St Louis area jarred stuff)
-my friend/colleague's chicken salad
-good ground beef 'fryed up' w/ nothing but diced onion, salt and pepper

Hot dog buns are like an artist's canvas.

I didn't say hotdogs were boring, but the buns are usually like white styrofoam--when I ate them, I used to peel the buns off sometimes!

Hmmm...nope, I think I'm still gonna go with the hot dog. That's what hot dog buns are for!
