Vietnamese Sandwiches?

BF is ranting at me about some Vietnamese sandwich he supposedly heard mentioned on FN, but we can't find it at Vietnamese restaurants, and our friend who's Vietnamese/Laotian has never heard of it. Anyone heard of a Vietnamese sandwich?

They're called banh mi. I recently tasted one and it is truly delicious.

I used to get Vietnamese sandwiches a lot at a couple of local places. Both places were very small and served only sandwiches, so if that's typical of most cities, you probably won't find the sandwiches at your local Vietnamese restaurants either. Both places had three varieties of sandwich. The particular one I remember had roast pork (sweet and smoky - delicious!), cilantro, fresh jalapeno slices, something white, crunchy and julienned that reminded me a bit of jicama but I'm not sure what it was...plus julienned carrots and probably other things I'm forgetting. All of this was encased in an individual-sized crunchy French baguette, the type that covers the front of your shirt in crumbs when you bite into it.

The other two varieties had basically the same ingredients but different kinds of meat.

You might try asking someone on the staff at the Vietnamese restaurants that you frequent and they might be able to point you to a place where you can get the sandwiches. They are really good.

They are amazing! So so good. If you are in San Francisco I can point you in the direction of one.

white crunchy thing is daikon

They are so delicious!

Yes, daikon! Thanks, Cassaendra. I couldn't come up with the word I was looking for.

I just had a bahn mi for dinner! Mm...I carefully ration myself to only one a week...

Bahn mi are fantastic! You can usually get them at a vietnamese bakery, which we have in abundance here in asian neighborhoods and near asian grocery stores. The pork ones are supposedly very good, but to me they have a bit of a mystery meat feel. You can get a great vegetarian version at most places made with tofu.

Bahn mi are great fun. In Seattle, there is a large Vietnamese and SE Asian population and we've had the benefit of plenty of places specializing in Vietnamese beef noodle soup, pho, and other dishes like bahn mi. Cheap, tasty and served up on that wonderful French roll.

I went to Food Network's website and searched on Vietnamese .... the first result was Vietnamese-Style Sandwich: Banh Mi".

Oh I love banh mi so much. When I was in college I'd get fresh them at the Vietnamese video store (I know, weird) across the street from my dorm along with an iced Vietnamese coffee.

Now my husband and I treat ourselves to them on the weekends after the farmer's market. If you're in NYC, the one I go to is Saigon Bakery on Broome Street. The video store/bakery I used to go to is on Lafayette.

Just saw in your profile that you're in Boston...found this on Chowhound

Go get one! :)

@embolini: If Jacquie's place isn't near you, I would try the smallest Vietnamese places around. One that has just a few tables and does mostly takeout. That's where they may have delicious bahn mi. For example, I get mine in a Vietnamese place which shares a building with an auto exhaust and emissions test shop! Yes, really. And yummy.

Thanks everyone, and thanks from the BF, too. We're gonna go find some bahn mi!!!

Miss Saigon in Fort Worth has these sandwiches on the menu. It is a little jewel of a restaurant in a strip center near NE Mall and the food is amazing.
